This morning, some of us went to church. It was only a 3 minute walk from our house, and you can hear the preaching before it even starts. We wandered up there, having to cross a little river on the way, by crossing over planks of wood that looked like they were about to snap any minute. And it was about 4 or 5 feet above the water. We got there at 11am. There was me and 5 of the boys - Robbie, Gorka, Sammy, Nathan and James. The church itself was pretty much like a village hall, painted bright blue. There were purple, red, gold and green curtains draped across the ceilings, and blue chairs for everyone to sit on. When we got there, there were maybe 15 Ghanaians there, banging tambourines and swaying as the ... read more

Today was orientation day. Steph, Sonja, Georgia, Meg, Sarah and I were taken into Accra byJamal. We started at Independence Square, where every year since 1957, all the Ghanaian tribes meet and parade there, due to them gaining independence from The British. We took a few photos, and Jamal pointed out the parliament house in the distance.gs Next stop was the market, and I've never seen anything like it. It was miles long and miles wide. We walked and walked and walked. So many Ghanaians, selling their wares. Fresh fruits, linens, handmade jewellery. It was chock-a-block. It's very bizarre walking through, as they grab your arm and try and get you to buy things from them. One old man walked up, tapped me on the arm and grinned at me saying "My wife!" erm....nope. Some sections ... read more

15th July I got up early this morning, about 6.30am. At 8.30am, we left for the school. We can pretty much pick the class we teach, and so I decided to go to the pre-school/montessori, as I teach older ones at home. So thought it'd be fun to try someting new! The kids in my class are 4-6 years old. When I got there, they had just started copying from the board "Africa, Oh Africa". They had to just write it out again and again and again. They learn by rote repetition and copying here. The school itself is tiny. The whole grounds are no bigger than the hall I skate in. There is a playground in the middle, and 4 or so outdoor structures dotted around it. That is it. They're pretty much falling down, ... read more

So after a pretty straightforward flight, I arrived in Ghana. It was pretty cool to fly over the Sahara desert - just masses and masses of sand in little dunes. Was welcomed to Ghana by a sign saying "We do not welcome paedophiles or ther sexual deviants" which made me giggle :) Searched the rows upon rows of people holding up signs, and finally spotted by name - introduced myself to Jamal, who lives here in the volunteer house with us. It was such a culture shock driving up to Teshie from the airport in Accra - so many people out and about at 10.30pm, just hanging out on the streets in front of their houses. The houses are just tiny shacks for the most part, and they look like derelict buildings. Apparently they host families ... read more

This afternoon was good. It is a 30 minute walk to the orphanage, so we all walked up as a group. We go past a massive dumping site, like a rubbish tip. I have never seen anything like it. Rubbish, everywhere. With people burning the mounds of trash, small fires smouldering. It's really bizarre walking through Teshie-Nungua as small children literally come up to you and say "good afternoon" or "hello, how are you?" and hold their hands out for a high five. I thought it was a myth, or a stereotype from what I'd read online, but it's 100% true. As I walked into the orphanage, a small girl (whose name, I later found out, was Destiny), jumped up at me to be picked up. It was like she knew me and I was an ... read more

This is my final travel blog entry for the time I have spent in Africa over the past year, and I arrived at Heathrow on exactly the same day as I left last summer to begin my adventures! It has truly been a life-changing experience, and leaving Ghana was particularly sad. I feel very lucky to have been part of Alpha Beta School for the past 10 months, as well as sharing some brilliant experiences with my parents when they visited me in June- we had a fantastic trip and it was great to see more of Ghana. There is so much I will miss about my time in Accra- too much to document- but mainly the small things regarding daily life in this African capital city. The shouts of the ‘tro tro mates’ giving their ... read more

APPRECIATION I wish to express my profound out most gratitude to the the almighty God for his protection and mercy and abundant grace on us up-to date. We are already two weeks into my final term of teaching in Ghana, and I already can’t believe where the time is going! It’s lovely to be back with the children and all the friends I have made here, and we’re all making the most of the time I have left… We finish our term here in early July, so there’s really only about 2 months left of my amazing and life-changing experience of teaching and living in Accra. I will be extremely sad to leave, but after a brilliant trip back to Vilanculos during the Easter vacation, I am more motivated than ever to start a life there later this year. I had the best possible two weeks with everyone there and, as always, I was welcomed back in such a way that it feels ... read more

I know, super late, and I'm missing Week 13. To be honest, I don't remember what else happened during the week 14 besides ending my class at Ashesi and my internship. So with that said, here are all of my pictures that I've chosen to share with you all from my internship (a couple are repeats, but they're just so darn adorable that they had to be included in this last post about them)... read more

On Tuesday, because I still didn’t have my internship since they had a week of Easter Holiday, I just went onto campus early to try to type up my last blog post…which I failed to do until a week after. But I got to campus to not only find out that I didn’t really have access to internet but that the University Professors just went on strike…meaning that I didn’t even have dance class that evening. Instead I began typing up some documents for my Dance Professor because I can type a lot…faster than a lot faster than the professors and students in the dance department. So I was still put to work and my only thing that I could say once I finished was to have my work count towards my grade in anyway, like ... read more
