Today was orientation day. Steph, Sonja, Georgia, Meg, Sarah and I were taken into Accra byJamal. We started at Independence Square, where every year since 1957, all the Ghanaian tribes meet and parade there, due to them gaining independence from The British. We took a few photos, and Jamal pointed out the parliament house in the distance.gs Next stop was the market, and I've never seen anything like it. It was miles long and miles wide. We walked and walked and walked. So many Ghanaians, selling their wares. Fresh fruits, linens, handmade jewellery. It was chock-a-block. It's very bizarre walking through, as they grab your arm and try and get you to buy things from them. One old man walked up, tapped me on the arm and grinned at me saying "My wife!" erm....nope. So after a pretty straightforward flight, I arrived in Ghana. It was pretty cool to fly over the Sahara desert - just masses and masses of sand in little dunes. Was welcomed to Ghana by a sign saying "We do not welcome paedophiles or ther sexual deviants" which made me giggle :) Searched the rows upon rows of people holding up signs, and finally spotted by name - introduced myself to Jamal, who lives here in the volunteer house with us. It was such a culture shock driving up to Teshie from the airport in Accra - so many people out and about at 10.30pm, just hanging out on the streets in front of their houses. The houses are just tiny shacks for the most part, and they look like derelict buildings. Apparently they host families ... read more

This is my final travel blog entry for the time I have spent in Africa over the past year, and I arrived at Heathrow on exactly the same day as I left last summer to begin my adventures! It has truly been a life-changing experience, and leaving Ghana was particularly sad. I feel very lucky to have been part of Alpha Beta School for the past 10 months, as well as sharing some brilliant experiences with my parents when they visited me in June- we had a fantastic trip and it was great to see more of Ghana. There is so much I will miss about my time in Accra- too much to document- but mainly the small things regarding daily life in this African capital city. We are already two weeks into my final term of teaching in Ghana, and I already can’t believe where the time is going! It’s lovely to be back with the children and all the friends I have made here, and we’re all making the most of the time I have left… We finish our term here in early July, so there’s really only about 2 months left of my amazing and life-changing experience of teaching and living in Accra. I will be extremely sad to leave, but after a brilliant trip back to Vilanculos during the Easter vacation, I am more motivated than ever to start a life there later this year. On Tuesday, because I still didn’t have my internship since they had a week of Easter Holiday, I just went onto campus early to try to type up my last blog post…which I failed to do until a week after. But I got to campus to not only find out that I didn’t really have access to internet but that the University Professors just went on strike…meaning that I didn’t even have dance class that evening. Instead I began typing up some documents for my Dance Professor because I can type a lot…faster than a lot faster than the professors and students in the dance department. So I was still put to work and my only thing that I could say once I finished was to have my work count towards my grade in anyway, like ... read more
