The border of Ghana was a breath of fresh air. Although our French had come on leaps and bounds over the last several weeks it was nice to take a break and revert back to English. Ghana is still seen as a bit of a jewel in West Africa in terms of having one of the most stable governments in the region and a growing economy. The first thing we saw when crossing the border were the signs advertising ‘help lines’ that you could call to report any government official or police officer who attempted to solicit bribes from you. A far cry from what we had encountered so far! The border formalities were fairly painless and we slipped into Ghana without incidence. We again tried to offload are toxic Guinea Francs but this just invited ... read more

Packing is frantic. Nerves are even more all over the place than the things I want to bring. But of course this is not Angelika writing, but her husband, who is setting up the blog. Tomorrow night, Angelika heads off on her first big solo adventure in many years - maybe since we've been married. It should be fun! I wish I could join as a fly on the wall ...... read more

Hello! It has been a very busy and exciting few months in Takoradi, I have a lot to share so here it goes... Each year on October 15th, over 200 million people are involved in celebrations in over 100 countries around the world; this is Global Handwashing Day. Diarrhea kills more people than AIDS, malaria and measles put together; handwashing with soap is the most effective and inexpensive way to prevent diarrheal & acute respiratory infections, which take the lives of millions of children in developing countries. Together, they are responsible for the majority of all child deaths. Together with the staff and students at the YMCA, we discussed the importance of washing your hands and the benefits it will have on the entire community. To demonstrate just how easily germs can be spread we chose ... read more

After just over another month here in Ghana, I felt it was time for another update! Firstly, I can’t believe how the time has flown, and that I am now 7 weeks in to my teaching with only 7 to go until Christmas break when I will be returning to the UK for 3 weeks. It will be great to see everyone and catch up with you all- I am missing friends and family a lot, and can’t wait to catch up on all your news, but there’s no denying the fact that I’m going to find being back in England pretty tough after 5 months in Africa … There is definitely something unique about the African lifestyle and African people- certainly in the three countries where I have spent my time since July- and I ... read more

Hello everyone! I'm so sorry it has taken me this long to update my blog, but here's what I've been up to over the past couple of weeks. Our first week in Takoradi we were able to meet the staff from the YMCA who we will be working with over the next couple of months. All of the staff and the students are so amazing, it is going to be a blast getting to know everyone! We successfully completed our first task which was to create a workshop on "innovation", to illustrate to the students how to use innovation to help develop a successful business. The students at the Vocational Training Institute (VIT) at the YMCA can choose to study either catering or fashion; although it is a female dominated program, we do have one male ... read more

I would like to start this entry by apologising for the lack of updates over the past three weeks… Adjusting to the life here has been exciting, challenging, at times frustrating and exhausting, but overall I am loving the experience of living in Africa and feel very happy that Accra will be the place I call ‘home’ for the next 10 months! After spending a lovely week with Florence and Sammy (the headmistress at my school and her husband), and meeting my fellow staff members at school, I moved into my own apartment on Sunday 9th September. I have a comfortable, light room and I am sharing the apartment with Barbara, who works in the office at school. As soon as I had unpacked my things, she took me out to a few of the local ... read more

After six days, four planes, three continets and a very exteneded and crowded cho cho (a small bus) ride, I have finally arrived in Takoradi! Only after a very short amount of time in Ghana, I have already experienced and have come to appreciate so much about this beautiful country and the people. My first few days in the country were spent in Accra, a city of 4 million people, and everything available at your fingertips! While driving around in the back of a taxi you can purchase a bathroom scale, an info-mercial weight loss product called the sauna belt and any selection of food to suit all tastes! My first order of business consisted of intoductions with the local YCI Ghana staff-Fred, Naana and Nee-who I will be working with during my time here. Also ... read more

Praise is reading a book about island treasures, black dogs and Sea Dogs. I know a Sea Lion, Sea Horse, Sea Cow, Sea Oats, Sea Lettuce, even Sea Grapes but . . . what is a Sea Dog!? My father would ask each of us at dinner, “What did you learn today that you didn’t know yesterday?” It is such a great question! If we are not careful, life can simply pass by- one day at a time. In an attempt to challenge our family to “live conscious” I ask the same question. Thru Praise’s story book, we have learned that a Sea Dog is simply . . . an experienced sailor. Nine years ago on September 3rd Praise made his surprise entry into this world. Some of you know the story, struggle and miracles involved ... read more

I spent Tuesday in Vilanculos town, saying some goodbyes to my friends here and simply enjoying my last few hours in this special community. On Tuesday evening, my particular friends (Francisco, Custodio, Chamussudine and ‘Joy’) came over to Baobab for one last time with some fish, traditional Mozambican food and a few bottles of ‘Tipo Tinto’ – the local rum! Francisco and Custodio cooked dinner for us all and made a fire near the beach. I provided some music and we had a brilliant evening eating and drinking under the stars, around the fire in true African style… Having known these boys for at least 18 months now (apart from ‘Joy who I met during this latest trip), they really are like family to me and I value them so much as people- they are extremely ... read more
