Happy Easter Sunday everyone! I dun celebrate Easter, but it is a great day for many Ethiopians.. especially in this area.. where many follow the orthodox christianity faith.. I am now at Bahir Dar, the southern tip of Lake Tana, which feeds into the Blue Nile.. well it's not really the source of the Blue Nile... as the lake is itself fed by many tributaries.. of which one main tributary, the , which itself is fed by a spring.. and that spring is supposedly the true source of the Blue Nile.. and since the Nile is the combination of the blue and white nile. .and blue nile has more water volume.. so many argued that this spring is also the source of the live-giving Nile.. I'm staying at this Ghion Hotel.. nice place.. right by ... read more

David and Nadia, friends from Addis, made the journey on The Road, with their Daughter (Nina, over from the UK on holiday) to visit Robe. On Friday, we went up to the Sanetti Plateau. We were up in the clouds and visibility was very poor, but it was amazing - driving in thick fog one minute and then it would suddenly lift. It did mean that, for the first time, we did not see wolves. Luckily, they had seen one on the way through Dinsho on the drive here. In the end, we decided that the visibility was too bad, and that it wasn’t fair on Elias the driver to keep on going, so we returned to Goba for lunch and then back to Robe for a relaxing afternoon. On Saturday, we headed off to Sof ... read more

The journey from Shihedi to Bahir Dar was a really pleasant journey.. I drove most of the way so that Dave could rest further.. From the border to Shihedi, the gravel road is still relatively flat.. shortly after Shihedi, the gravel road starts climbing as we begun to be greeted by Ethiopia's mountains.. As we came round the mountains/hills.. we passed by so many villages.. many without electricity.. and all of the round huts were made entirely of wood and grass and some covered with mud as wall.. And Saturday is market day.. and we saw lots of villagers walking along the road to the bigger regional villages/towns.. some with their sheeps.. some with their shopping basked balanced on their head.. etc.. You feel like you've taken a step back in time.. and the feeling's ... read more

Ha Ha Ha This is for the ones thinking that travel is like a ferry tale. Nice places, nice people, nice views and nice food. The ferry tale part: A typical local meal in a lazy southern village, sitting on small chairs and eating from a hand woven grass table. (US$ 0.40 for two people!) Enjoing the view of the desert spotted with few small mud huts. Driving slowly watching trough the window the dusty roads staying behind. (US$ 2.00 for a 200km trip) Sleep in a hotel room with open door and window, seeing the stars on the clean desert sky. (US$ 1.20 per night) Now comes the backpackers side of things: We arrived in town very hungry. We couldn't speak a world of Amharic and they don't speak anything else. So we made ... read more

One of the other things that I was keen to do, and that has taken a while to happen (for all sorts of reasons) was to teach in a local Elementary School, mainly to demonstrate that Active Learning Methods (which I teach on the Higher Diploma Programme) can be applied in Ethiopian schools with large classes. My first lesson was a nightmare! I expected better behaviour and the Module that I was given to teach suggested quite a high level of English. Neither assumption was correct. In my second lesson, I displayed ground rules and lowered my expectations. I teach one English lesson a week to a Grade 6 class (ages 10 - approx. 16). Now, lessons are going well and the students seem to have got used to my Farenji ways of teaching. It is, ... read more

22 February - 1 March 2007 On Tuesday there was a rumour that the College was going on Tour! But nothing was confirmed. On Wednesday, I was told about the Tour and that we were leaving that afternoon! I went home to pack and phone VSO (I’m going to be away from Robe for more than 24 hours … Where are you going? … I don’t know…. How long will you be away for? … I don’t know!). We eventually left on Thursday. Everyone got on the bus at 11.45, then it was decided that we needed a sign in the front window. We left the College at 11.50, stopping four times before the roundabout to pick up people or luggage. Then, the cry went up… “What about lunch?” So, we stopped in Robe for an ... read more

Getting the local bus to Bale Mountains National Park, at Dinsho, we called in to meet James (who works for the Wolf Conservation Programme) before heading up Dinsho Hill. Meeting James was a stroke of luck for Clare as he had family staying, who were heading to Addis (or Finfinee as it is called in Afaan Oromo) on Thursday, and kindly offered to give her a lift as she was planning to go by bus. The headquarters compound at Dinsho is such a peaceful place. We walked to the top of the hill for lunch, stopping as Mountain Nyala crossed our path. On the way back down we came across a group of around 20 animals.... read more

Shashemene is described in the Lonely Planet Guidebook as “a strong contender for the least-attractive-town-in-Ethiopia award”. Probably an apt description! Clare and I were going to Robe, and had to stay overnight in order to get the 6.30 bus from Shashemene. We decided that we may as well stay there, instead of making extra trips to Awasa - besides which it was not somewhere we would either like to stay in alone! We found a hotel not too far from the bus station, and decided that sharing a room was preferable for economy, and for safety! It is possibly the cheapest hotel I have ever stayed in - working out at the equivalent of 80 pence for the room (i.e. 40 pence each!). We also managed to find a small place, no more than someone’s front ... read more
