I was lucky enough to get a lift back to Robe on Wednesday with Dereje and Nigel (VSO doing research into Valuing Teachers). This time, we came via the usual Shashemene route, which took 9 hours. As I knew I was getting a lift, I shopped while I was in Addis - luxury items (porridge oats, noodles, coconut milk, cheese, crisps) that I have not found in Robe. Oh, how I shopped! On Thursday, I was back at work. I accompanied Nigel to Alii Birra Primary School - the school I can hear from my house as I am hoping to arrange to do some teaching there and thought it was a good way to introduce myself. In the afternoon, I ran a Higher Diploma session, which Nigel observed. In the evening, we went over to ... read more

Christmas in Addis was very different to my usual cheese and tomato sandwiches on a walk with Martin, but it was good - made by being with some good friends from VSO. We even bought, and decorated, a (very small) Christmas tree. Four of us stayed together in David and Nadia’s house, and often stayed up late talking. I had a nightly argument with Teresa, but won the right to sleep in the lounge (which made sense as I was usually awake first). On Saturday night, we invited Nigel to dinner and had a Christmas celebration meal (pasta and tomato sauce by Mary, fruit salad by Teresa) complete with crackers and paper hats. Sunday was Christmas Eve. The four of us went for a leisurely walk along Bole Road, looking for places to have Christmas Dinner, ... read more

I travelled Addis Ababa with Patricia, my Programme Manager, Dereje and Patricia’s friend Emer, in a VSO vehicle, which was much better than having to travel by local bus - a journey that I have not yet done. We went via the Asela Road rather than going to Shashemene then up to Addis, as none of us have ever been that way. It was interesting, but the road was bad pretty much all the way and it took 13 hours door-to-door. I stayed at David and Nadia’s house in Addis, which was very kind of them. They had arranged with the landlord to give me a key as they were in the UK. On the Saturday, I went to an NGO Fair with Beverly and Nigel. I had intended to buy Christmas presents to send to ... read more

Moving to Ethiopia has obviously been a good way of fooling the Aliens that usually live in my bank account. (This may not make sense to some people reading this - but some of you will know exactly what I mean!) I went to the bank this morning, for the second time today - the first time was my first day in Robe when I opened an account. As I had been told there is often an initial problem with transferring money to the bank in Robe, I had brought with me, in addition to two months salary that VSO gave us before departure, some money of my own. I still have 500 birr of that left, but decided to withdraw money from my bank to take on my grand trip to the capital city - ... read more

December 1: After departing Accra (and via two layovers in Lome, Togo and Abuja, Nigeria) Patrick and I made the most of our short time in the Ethiopian capitol of Addis Ababa. With enough qat and coffee in our systems to fuel a rocket, we escaped the evening chill by relaxing in the coffee houses and nightclubs of this interesting East African city. The soothing rhythms of the band and the dim, intimate light of the lounge in which we relaxed was a welcomed lull before our mad dash to Tanzania.... read more

When I asked colleagues at the College about getting to Dinsho, they again said that it is difficult. However, I figured that as all buses to Addis and Shashemene go through Dinsho, I should be able to get a bus early in the morning. In hope, I went to the bus station on Friday to enquire about bus times, keeping my fingers crossed for a later start, but, as I probably already assumed, I was told I would have to get a 6.30 bus. As the journey is only an hour, I decided that there was no need to get there at 5.30 (which seems to be normal practice to get a good seat) so arrived at just gone 6. There were 2 farenji on the bus - a couple of Spanish guys (one of whom ... read more

This is our first blog entry - all going well you'll all receive an email update! We are back in London after just under 2 weeks in Africa. From the outset - I think it's fair to say that Africa is one of our favourite continents so it should be little surprise that we chose to squeeze is one last quick trip before we head back to NZ. The basic outline of our trip was to head to Ethiopia and onto to Uganda... After a small issue with the outbound flight - we found ourselves in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (we didn't quite make the flight we were booked on but luckily we found out in time and thanks to the nice people at Emirates we managed to change our flights and still catch the Ethiopian connection!)... ... read more

It cannot be said that my first visit to Goba, a town 14km south of Robe, was a roaring success! I had decided that this weekend I would go away, somewhere. I considered Dinsho, but nobody I spoke to was sure about how to get a bus there, and most said that it was even harder to get back. I was also told, that there is Internet access in Goba - the more I thought about it, the more I became obsessed about going there to spend many hours sending emails. I wrote emails in advance, saved onto a memory stick, and off I went. The bus journey was cheap (2 birr) and blessedly short - there is no tarmac on the road from Robe to Goba either. Goba looks like a set for a gold-mining ... read more

The long, arduous journey on a local bus travelling mainly on an unpaved road was worth it to get to Awasa. My journey started at 5am (11:00 Ethiopian time) when the Guard who lives next door but one to me had offered to take me to the bus. There was a false start, when he woke me at 1am (Ferenji time) by shouting through the door “Is it time?” We made our way across the slippery mud road, in the rain, to one of the gates of the bus station - but most people were at the other gate! He said he would ask the Guard to open up for me, but I am always uncomfortable about getting “white” treatment. I need not have worried - as soon as the gate was opened a few centimetres, ... read more
