The title question regarding the number of Mohamed's in Egypt, could be asked of several names of course. It just struck me that after just a couple of weeks in Egypt I had met at least 4 or 5. I asked one of the local tour leaders' how many he knew. His response of 40 wasn't really a shock. Having to remember each Mohameds' fathers' name for further identificatiojn might be difficult for people like me though. Not a good country to be bad with names that's for sure!! And on with the travels. Having spent the last day in Cairo racing around the museum, it was nice to stop and watch the sunset. We stoppped right on a bridge and within a couple of minutes a cup of tea was offered to us all. ... read more

I know the entries further along this trip won't have as many photos and stories, until then I may be able to compile my own entertaining travel novel!! Upon my return from Jordan, I had just over one week in Cairo before heading out to the rest of Egypt. Looking forward to seeing a bit more, I bought a train ticket to Alexandria. The 3 hour journey north to the Mediterranean Sea was through many farmers fields and past a 101 donkeys. It got to a point where zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz crept in. Began dreaming of some swimming, some shopping, some exploring, and then I arrived. Not wanting to allow the hotel guys and taxi drivers to get the better of me, I marched on past with intentions of following the map I had briefly studied on the ... read more

At last, after 18 months we've returned to one of my favourite places, The Red Sea. Sharm el Sheik, to be exact. We were a bit apprehensive as sometimes a return visit doesn't live up to your memories of a place. We needn't have worried, our hotel was even better than the last one we stayed in and more importantly the hotel's beach was fantastic. One of the problems of Sharm is that most beaches are private so you're stuck with the one your hotel has to offer. Set in a part of Shark Bay our beach was uncrowded, sandy and the coral was absolutly amazing!! Just a short 'glide' through the shallow water over a layer of relativly dead coral and you came to the edge of a steep drop where the sea turned a ... read more

When you come to Egypt, there is a very standard tourist trail that you take. This goes from Cairo (the pyramids) to Luxor (Valley of the Kings, and Karnak temples), followed by Aswan (feluccas (little boats) on the nile), followed by Abu Simbel (very impressive large temples). Then there is also the Red Sea, where you can go scuba diving. And Mt Sinai. Apparently fantastic, but not as popular. One of the problems with a 4 month round the world trip is that you don't get time to do everything. So we had decided not to go to the Red Sea. Plus we figure we get great diving in Australia already. Plus we don't dive :) So we had decided to do the standard tourist track. Our Lonely Planet had warned us not to allow our ... read more

well... we didn't have an auspicious start to our adventures in egypt... having finally succumbed to my first bout of food poisoning I spent a very miserable few hours in the middle of the night flying over libya vomiting into an aeroplane toilet bowl while dave extolled the many virtues of Egyptair cuisine! thankfully when we arrived in cairo we had our hostel picking us up so we went straight to bed and i continued to enjoy the constant companionship of a clean toilet! so cairo wasn't the best start but it was only the first day... Our second day in Cairo i was determined to see the pyramids so armed with lots of water and dry bread we set out (intrepid adventurers that we were - we took a taxi from the hostel!) However we ... read more

So here I am. No longer roaming through beautiful Canada. No longer working every waking moment through the entire UK. I AM IN CAIRO!!! Arriving at the first stop in the big adventure was daunting, the fact that it was the middle of the night was a mere inconvenience. Looked for my pre-arranged driver named Ahmed that would hopefully be looking for me as well. Sounds easier than it really was. There must have been at least 10 other guys that grabbed my hand, "I have taxi for you" "No no Miss, not him, I have cheaper price for pretty lady" And then at the end of the line, there he was. Phew- task one is over with, now let's get out of this airport! Ever lost your car in a parking lot? It wasn't the ... read more

Hay there. We had a blast in Cairo. Thankfully not literally ( Some of you may have heard about the explosions ). Cairo would have to rate as one of the nosier , smelliest, dirtiest cities we’ve been to. Very Hectic. The history there is great. We visited the Pyramids ( Jo didn’t like the camels too much !! ) ,Islamic Cairo, The markets( Bought the odd souvenir ) , Coptic Cairo and the Citadel built during the Crusades. The sphinx was amazing and the Pyramids Huge. We took the train from Cairo to Luxor , following the Nile . ( Very cheap and get to meet the locals). Luxor was great. The valley of the Kings and Queens was extremely hot ( 40-50C ) We visited both Luxor and Karnak temples at night. At the ... read more
