Here i am back in this cosy internet cafe right by the sea with a view to saudi arabia. It is still very windy but the wind is not uncomfortable. Yesterday I walked along the water to a place called "blue lagoon" which was about 1 hour walk. I ended up staying there almost the whole day because it was so lovely. The water was shining in turquoise-bluish colors and the water was so clear. In the evening I went for dinner to a bedouin place directly at the water. This place has pillows arranged around small tables, candlelight and if youre sitting right at the water you sometimes get some drops of seawater into your face (had the fullmoon right above the water.. man it was so amazing!!). This is a place for spending a ... read more

here i am in egypt now.. no plane crash, no kidnapping so far hahaha jk To put it in brief words: Egpt is the most lovely country ive ever visited! (Im not saying this out of holiday-beginning-enthusiasm, within a few hour ive experienced things i never seen before) People are soo sooo loveable and hospitable! Right now Im in the net cafe in dahab (sinai peninsula) right at the ocean. Theres a wind blowing in here but its so pleasant. The temperature at the arrival was 39 in the sahde but honestly it doesnt feel like almost 40 as the heat is very dry and easy to bear so far. The plane landed at 12:15 at noon and I was still a bit tired after getting up so early this morning. After getting the visa, getting ... read more

Here I am, back in Cairo after visiting a year ago! However, this time I am in a much different part of the city - Maadi, a very Westernized part of the city. Our flight over was okay - almost no sleep, but overall a good flight. We arrived on Wednesday afternoon and were brought to our apartment hotel - 3- bedrooms, 1 1/2 bathrooms, a kitchen, large living room, and a balcony. Then we were told that many of the apartments we would be looking at for ourselves would be similar - WOW! Yesterday, we started to hunt for apartments with the husband of the VP at our school and the real estate agent - we saw many apartments, most of them quite nice. Prices ranged from 1700-4700 Egyptian pounds (for all you Canadians, divide ... read more

I think that it was interesting that a lot of the tourist attractions have gone to the bother and expense of installing x-ray machines and metal detectors but they didn't stop us on any occasion when we beeped!! So not seeing the point! I assume it was only to make all of us feel better!! We then flew back Cairo with Egypt Air, who were definitely better than that dodgy Memphis Air we flew with from Abu Simbel!! It was quiet in Cairo as it was a Friday and Fridays are classed as a holiday - everyone goes to the mosque to pray. We went to the bizarre and tried our hand at bartering for things we didn't really need again! It was sooooo hot though that after an hour and a half we called it ... read more

I'll tell you the facts as they were told to me, or as best as I can anyways, can't guarantee that they are correct though, as our tour guide tends to repeat himself at least 3 times and often with story corrections further more I also think that some of the details are a matter of opinion as you can hear different versions of the stories being told when you stand near the other tour guides.... so here goes.... Spent the next day cruising the Nile whilst I sun baked again all day before arriving at Luxor - The ancient city of Thebes, which has a population of about 500,000. As we arrived we took a brief tour and you see all of the farming land and donkeys and sheep roaming around the streets. We visited ... read more

Yesterday we sailed on a felucca down the River Nile. It was very peaceful and scenic. The current goes from south to north and the wind from north to south so when you are heading into the wind the breeze is nice... The Nile River goes for 5,000 miles and is the longest river system in the world. When we docked on the side of the Sahara desert, I was surprised at how clean the Nile water was, we bottled some and it was crystal clear.... they say that the Nile refreshes itself everyday by the strong currents. A couple on the tour decided to drink the Nile water, they say that you can drink it but they don't recommend it and I don't intend to try it either!!! guess we'll just check to see if ... read more

Well after the initial flight dramas I arrive in Cairo airport at about 1am and was met by our Contiki rep who introduced me to two other girls who'd been on my flight, Wendy and Kathy which was nice. We boarded our shuttle and headed towards our hotel. The first thing you notice is the traffic, it reminds me of my time in Thailand, there are no lines on the road and seemingly no road rules except the old survival of the fittest!!! the streets were jammed packed going back towards the city and they tell me that that is because Egyptians work 24 hours a day. The streets were packed with people too busily going about their business. Probably the most amazing thing we saw was our first glimpse of the Pyramids, right from the ... read more

Africa » Egypt » Upper Egypt » Aswan July 18th 2005

Ok, getting back to the story!! So I arrived in one peice to Aswan, 800 miles south of north Cairo. it's very hot, about 39 degrees at 9.30am. However they tell me during July and August it can get up to 50 degrees in the shade!! thank god my tour got put back to now instead of next month! don't think I would have made it! There is no humidity here. Our guide said that it rained for about 10-15 minutes just once this year. Aswan is surounded by the Sahara Desert and is a prodominately African city. Most of the buildings are made of stone and cement. Aswan has the biggest granet quarry in Africa. It has been running for 5,000 years so far and they say that is it an endless quarry as they ... read more

This is the first time we've been back to Egypt since 1997. Oh, how I've missed it! They say that if you drink the water of the Nile, you'll be sure to return. They're right.. Ahh, ya Eskendereya.. :)... read more
