Ok it has been quite a short time since I updated my blog....just over a week...but still there is quite a lot to tell.
On the bus from Mombasa, to Dar, (which by the way was driven by a crazy man....any man who races another bus by attempting to pass it on a two lane road with incoming traffic in site is a crazy man) I met a really cool local guy...from a rich family....called Amer; I was invited hunting with him and his friends near Morogoro if I had time...and at the time I was deadly serious when I said I would try to find time...as it sounded really cool. Besides which famous African Explorer hasn't shot a bit of game on his trips.
Anyway I arrived in Dar es Salaam in the early evening after a fairly comfortable, compared to Ethiopian buses, journey. I immediately headed for the Lonelyplanet recommended hotel, the Safari Inn, only to find that a group of 15 English girls had beaten me there and there was no longer any room....it seemed that my search for women and accommodation was not going to be easy....I eventually agreed to stay in the Jambo Inn...which at 20,000 TSH a night was rather expensive I thought...although a fan and Mozzy net was nice, and essential in the ridiculously humid Dar. My first few day in Dar were pretty much wasted, as I found out Saturday that I couldn't get anything book as everywhere was either closed or put retards in charge for the weekend....the train station was especially unhelpful actually telling me that they wern't the train station at one point....I stormed out just after this. The only joy I had was at Tourist information, where the very friendly lady rang the MV Liemba booking office only to find that it was closed on Saturdays...so grr everything would have to be put of until Monday....and it was as I didnt even attempt to leave the Hotel on Sunday...I basically bummed around as if it were a Sunday back at Worksop College, which wasn't to bad as it ment I only had to wear ne shirt that day as opposed the 3 I wore on Saturday due to having to chane every few hours due to the profuse sweating that was going on. oh yeh I did do one thing Sunday, bought a pair of less dodgy looking...but no less second hand...pair of shorts.
Monday went far better than Sunday....the morning was spent actually sortng everything out. I bought my train ticket to Kigoma, and bus ticket to Dodoma (actually the capital of Tanzania, and where the train now runs from because..as far as I can gather...there was a crash between Dar and Dodoma and they hadn't cleared the line yet lol) all with the help of the large, but very friendly and helpful, customer service lady at the train station....40 hours of travelling for 15 quid....not bad...although I did have to settle for 2nd Class on the train as first class was booked up. I also returned to the Tourist information office where the nice lady managed to get through to the Liemba booking office in Kigoma, and reserved me a first class cabin; and finally to top it all off I confirmed I would have my passport with Zambian Visa back in time to get the last hi-speed ferry to Zanzibar on Tuesday...so hoorah all was going well;it even got better, as arriving at, the very nice restaurant, Chef's Pride I was invited to join two Canadian girls for a meal as there was very few other seats. Their names turned out to be Julie and Nadine...and they were both very interesting girls (and amusing as they said things like nerds, and Popsicle lol), who had even been traveling in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Burundi....and people thought I was crazy and going to dangerous places...more importantly they liked drinking, so after I helped them book their tickets we headed out or an afternoon, and which soon turned into evening, of drinking. It was very nice, and we visited a lot of varied places, including the touristy Florida Pub, the high class 7th floor Bar at the Peacock Hotel, and the local bar called the New Happy....numerous pints later I walked them back to their hotel room and got a place to store my bags before my ferry to Zanzibar...which saved me 500TSH in storage fee from the Jambo. The next day was a it of a rush, because after depositing my bags in their room (and getting a good view of 2 semi-naked attractive girls) I decided to go with them to the Tanzara Station to help them get their tickets; this was a mistake, as we arrived at lunch and they were closed for lunch. Basically by the time they were done purchasing their whatnot and we were on pur way back it was already passed my boarding time; I got my bags, said a hasty goodbye, rushed to pick up my passport, and then (because taxi drivers were being cocks and overcharging me) literally sprinted to the ferry port arriving 15minutes before the boat was meant to leave...completely drenched in sweat...it was worth it though, the views of the city as we were leaving it were fantastic..,..sun drenched East Africa at it's best. I stayed outside for most of the journey, mainly just to let the swear dry lol
Once in Zanzibar I was quickly besieged by an army of touts, out of which I chose Jackson a evil looking man who looked like he wanted to kill me...but as nice enough. He got me a room at the Annex Malindi lodge for 10000 TSH....but only after an hour of negotiating....he also organised my transport to the Northern Beaches...capitulating from 10,000 to 3000 in a matter of minutes; feeling a little better that things were going well I let Jackson take me to his brothers stall at the fish market for dinner....which was quite interesting as you got t see the newly caught fish cooked in front of you....I also quenched my thirst by sampling every stalls Sugar Cane juice...never buying any mind you lol As soon as I had sat down I was joined by a group of blokes on an overlanding tour....who's names I forget; more importantly than the fact the bought me beer was the fact that they mentioned that on this tour there were 5 guys and 18 girls....chiching! We soon went off to meet the girls at the Old Fort for some drinking, alas to my disgust there were only really 2 lookers....one who was gorgeous, but taken, and a 27yr old Irish girl/woman...who incidentally was (very drunk) interested in me until I made the absolutely cardinal mistake of saying 'I love your accent, you sound exactly like my friends (Frazers') mum'...needless to say the romance was lost from then on, although she did strip of later and go skinny dipping...I watched....it was to dark for pictures though lol The only action i would have got that night was from a rather fat and ugly English girl (imagine Ben Johnson as a girl all of you Worksopians) who I turned down flatly and concentrated on Pool....me and my local partner Ali were unbeaten for 10 games....much to the disgust o a couple of the Aussie guys...who to be fair were awesome but unlucky.
Net morning I awoke, and explored Stone Towns narrow streets...getting lost a lot but managing to buy a book (about Ewart Grogan) and post Tati's weekly postcard...and getting throughly covered in sweat for the effort....god it's hot here...beautiful though. I got back to my hotel just in time to get the shared taxi to Nungwi Beach, along with a Aussie Guy called Tom and 2 Finish girls who long and complicated names I forget. The drive was fairly boring, and hot..but I did manage to finds out the other paid 7000 which made me feel a lot better. It took ages to find somewhere in my price range, but after chatting to 3 English girls and an American (who I was later destined to become friends with) I decided on Jambo Brother....who or 15000 TSH gave me a room with bathroom and warm water...right on the beach....it's a pity the government outlawed camping but I didn't care as this was fantastic. Much to the amusement of 4 very attractive Norwegian girls sunning themselves, I ran at the water like a idiot and dived it....it was so nice....as was the Norwegians inviting me for a drink later. In the end I forgot lol but only because I got chatting to Tania (from Addis) who was there with a French bloke she met in Rwanda. In the end I ditched Tania aswell because Tom came arround (the Aussie) with the three English girls in tow. We had a nice meal, and I met Piet their South African dive instructor who Anna (one of English girls fancied). Hayley and Alice, the other two girls, were great company....and went to Oakham, one of Worksop Colleges great rivals...they were also fit (as you can see from the pictures)...a little bit girly girl though. My next two days were spent on Nungwi beach with these two fitties, and Catherine (a cool American women) it was pretty cool....although I did find out they both had boyfriends which was a bit of a set back...and that they had turned down two handsome pilots the night before...so I had no chance; that didn't stop me trying though, as I went for a 4hour walk down the beach with Hayely and I turned on all my charm....unfortunately just as she uttered the words 'your so charming and sweet, any girl would jump at the chance to have you' I stood on a sea urchin and had numerous spikes injected into my foot....needless to say the swearing ruined whatever romance that the moment had bred. I hobbled back, collecting shells with which Hayley said she wanted to make a necklace. That night I drowned my sorrows, and dulled the pain...which had being made worse by the fact Alice (a soon to be med student) had tried to get them out with a pocket knife). The next afternoon the girls left, and I spent the day talking with a local fisherman..and eventually getting him to help me (free of charge) to make Hayley's shells into a necklace...nice and romantic of me lol The night I spent with Piet and Tom, polishing off Tom's whiskey and Amarula bottles before heading to Cholos bar...where after just saying hello to a group of very drunk American girls got my knob groped for a while...before they spotted some better looking locals and left me to go and swim with them.I went over to Tom who was chatting up a fit Danish girl, whose fat friend grabbed my ass and made me run away to the Finnish girls from the bus who I chatted to for a while; after saving them from the advances of a local I got a goodnight kiss lol The night ended with me alone lol Zanzibar had some of the most fantastic beaches I have ever seen in my life, or am likely to...t.hey were like pictures of paradise, lush palm trees, white sands leading into a calm turquiose blue seas, fishing dhows peacefully bobbing up and down, and most importantly fit girls and a bar near by lol But seriously it was perfection, alas my skin couldn't handle the near equatorial sun and my shoulders have been fried...but I will try again to turn my body brown in Malawi.
The next day Tom, and I headed back to Stone Town.....where he was staying in the Africa House Hotel...the most expensive hotel in Stone Town, needless to say I hung around in his room for a long while watching satellite TV. We headed off to find the girls early evening and then meant off to have a nice Italian meal; I walked them back to their room like a gentleman and then went to bed....not before getting told off by the very Muslim hotel owner that men were not allowed on the top (womans) floor after 9pm and I was breaking the Hotel rules...he got agreer when Tom just laughed at him. Tom, and Cath, both left early the next day...and Alice went of diving....so I spent another day alone with Hayley....and despite my best effort and even presenting the necklace, the most I got was a thank you peck on the cheek....and a much more happy and touchy Hayley for the rest o the day. Eventually it was time for me to leave, the girls were a little distracted by having hired the film the Notebook so the best I got was a few hugs (and stupid pictures on my camera the took whilst I was showering). I boarded the overnight ferry, the New Happy, at 10pm....and, despite meeting a cool Canadian guy called Ben, slept pretty much all the 8 hour journey to Dar., i only had a 2nd Class ticket, but because I was a Mzungu (white) they presumed I had a 1st

Didn't really need another pic but just wanted to highlight fact they were FIT
class one and was bundled into the Luxury Lounge...with recliner seats lol
Arriving in Dar the next day at 6am I immediately set out by Taxi to Unbungo, the main bus station....only to discover I had possibly the oddest taxi driver in the city; instead of stopping to buy petrol, he let it run out then pushed the taxi the remaining 3km's..still on the main highway....I was so scared, but eventually got there and on my bus without and hassle. All I remember from the bus journey was being woken up by the man wanting to see my ticket, and then being woken up to be told we would be at Dodoma Railway station in 5minutes...so all a very enjoyable and smooth bus journey. As we pulled into Dodoma I saw, standing next the Scandanavia Luxury Coach she had taken, a beautiful (lol joking Miek, don't worry) girl; who as soon as I had got my bags from the bus safely I headed off to chat to. I soon found her, and after relocating to the plush Chinese restaurant of the New Dodoma hotel we got chatting. Her name was Anne, and she was a Dutch medical student going sure that my wife is ok, I'll leave soon'.....needless to say this was a not particularly unpleasant scenario lol We eventually left the compartment, and headed for a romantic Orient Express like dinner of Fried fish and rice in a crowded dining car lol It was nice all the same, and we chatted a lot of the journey away.....I discovered she was 27 (can you believe it from the pictures....I couldn't..she even had to show me her passport lol). Eventually it had to end though, and at 7-30am the train pulled into Tabora Station and we both alighted....I made sure she safely found a taxi who would take her to the bus station...requesting he make sure she was safe..and that was it...another person I really like an got on with very well left behind due to this damn travelling...oh well onward to Lusaka....oh well Tabora to Kigoma, and the the Liemba trip in my next blog...aswell as reuniting with Dave. (this last bit is rushed, and I could have included so much more about Anne, she was very cool...and even the train journey deserved mor but I have a boat to catch).
