South America March 17th 2008

Well apologies to those who don´t like football as there is a lot of it this time... but your consolation is that its been pissing rain everywhere I´ve been recently. Who says I am a technophobe? Well everyone actually. Although it has taken forever to upload these videos here they are! Best with sound. So, after the glacier traffic jam in Patagonia came back to Buenos Aires to catch some sun and football. Took in River Plate v. San Martin, with a Dutch lad met on me travels. A decent game and good atmosphere made all the more memorable by the torrential rain which meant match abandoned with 9 mins left ... what the feck?? I come to South America so see a match abandoned due to rain.. are you having a laugh???? And no, Argentina ... read more

So, I have made it back to Quito and, better yet, found a restaurant that offers free wi-fi with purchase. That said, I have paid an relatively exorbitant price to sit in this relatively nice restaurant and use their internet. I guess it's not so bad, but my rum and coke plus a brownie is going to set me back about $7-8 with tax and tip (which most "sitdown" restaurants in Ecuador automatically add to your bill at 12% sales tax/I.V.A. and 10% tip) - a huge amount in Ecuador. That said, I did just sip my "Cuba Libre" and they didn't skimp on the rum (it frankly seems like the Coke is for coloring more than anything), so I guess I won't complain too much. Anyway, this blog is short and sweet...it's about the Mariscal, ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Rio de Janeiro March 17th 2008

Ausweis, Taschen, usw. Ich war sauber!! Die Jungs ... read more

South America » Ecuador » North » Otavalo March 17th 2008

Here is the long awaited blog on Otavalo... Otavalo is one of the "1000 places to see before you die", according to the book by the same name. There is a lot to talk about with Otavalo, and frankly some I liked and some I didn't like so much. I'll try to put a lot together in not too many words. Otavalo's claim to fame is the Saturday market. Though there is actually a market everyday, Saturday is the big day. The indigenous people of Ecuador, whose name I currently forget, learned to do many crafts. Not the least of these is the intricate weaving on looms they created. Over the years, they would come to Otavalo primarily on Saturday to trade their wares. Their fame grew and today it takes up a full city block ... read more

Yesterday was one of the most unusal Palm Sundays I have ever spent. Woke up to sounds of a band and hymn singing in the street. So I quickly grabbed clothes and camera, and ran out of the hotel. I followed the flower petals for a couple of blocks, and found the procession near the main square of "Old Town". There were about 500 people singing the same hymn over and over, waving cornstalks and palm fronds woven into intricate shapes, and throwing rose petals at the wooden Christus (with real cornstalks in his wooden hand) that 8 men were carrying on their shoulders..............all following 8 women dressed in colorful Ecuatorian costumes and Nefertitti style hats carrying plates of different vegetables or bread or cake..............all following a live Jesus on a burro. The crowd gradually got ... read more

South America » Chile » Magallanes » Torres del Paine March 17th 2008

Thursday 6th March As we drive into Torres del Paine national park we see the magnificent granite towers that the park is famous for. They really are amazing and I feel so honoured to be here! Our campsite is next to a lake with a view of the towers and the first sunset is the best we see. Friday 7th March Almost the whole group of us do the Torres walk which leads up to the granite towers. The walk is quite steep at first then flattens out through woodland and then there is a really steep clamber up boulders at the end to get to the top and see the fantastic view of the towers and water running down a steep drop to a turquoise lake. The walk took about 3 and a half hours ... read more

So lat night i had the wonderfully delightful mushrom pasta in a bag and what a treat.....lol, i found out my dorm room was full of spanish girls so no dorm chat with my roomies which sucks, so i headed to bed to listen to my ipod and then catch some ZZZZs and prior to that i couldnt get the hostel i wanted in Izagu falls and so i plumped for the only hostel that had the three nights i needed. South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Miraflores March 17th 2008

Day 10 - Lesmahagow to Peru. We said goodbye to Iquitos and headed back to Lima for the final leg of this part of the journey. No extreme turbulence on this flight! Thankfully. Today was the last day with the Vine Trust and Scripture Union Peru, and it was finished in style. We visited the boys centre in Lima and, and we were introduced to all the boys there. These were boys who had only recently come in from the streets, and so their trust levels were still very low. The centre in Lima is very different from all the other homes that we have visited during this trip, but it needs to be. The boys have spent years on the streets with no guidelines, no boundaries, no restrictions, and so it will take time and ... read more

South America » Argentina » Tierra del Fuego » Ushuaia March 17th 2008

Heading out of Puerto Natales I jumped on a bus headed to Ushuaia, the "southern most" city in the world (Depending on what you define as a city). On a quick bus change I ran into to Tim, a Swiss guy I met in Torres Del Paine and we quickly got to sharing our adventures stories. The landscape this far south resembles that what I imagine Alaska might at such an latitude to the north; barren, wind blown and cold. A few hours into the ride we boarded a boat to transfer us over the Straight of Magellan. Accompanied by both wind and dolphins it was kind of impressive to be crossing this historic channel. As we neared Ushuaia the landscape became a bit less bleak as forest and snow covered peaks began to dot the ... read more
