Awhile back I decided to tempt my fate and head to South America for a year. After quitting my job I jumped on a plane and found myself in an unfamiliar land with an unfamiliar language. Here are a few of my experiences from the beaches of Brazil to the mountains of Argentina to the grassy plains of Paraguay. I hope my pictures and stories inspire those longing to get away from the familiar life and wish to explore the vast possibilities this world has to offer. If ever you have a question on traveling abroad or about specific places I have written about feel free to send me a message. Enjoy the Blog. Tchau.

It took awhile, but here are some of my favorite pictures, a few memories I will never forget, my top ten list of places visited and an assortment of videos taken along the way. Looking back I chose not necessarily the best moments, but the ones which come to mind most often when reflecting on my trip. Hope you enjoyed my tales throughout the year and even more that I will soon be off on the road again. Top Fifteen Memories Listed by order of occurrence 1. Arriving in the São Paulo airport and realizing I understood nothing of Portuguese. 2. Trekking for two days over deserted beaches with the Italians. 3. Almost getting robbed by two teenagers in Brazil. 4. Watching the sunrise over Brazil from the Pico da Bandeira. 5. Hiking through the jungle ... read more

Arriving at the bus terminal in São Paulo I had only a vague idea of where I was headed. I figured I would just take whatever bus left first heading towards the northern Paulista coast. So I boarded a bus to IlhaBela, an island known for its natural beauty and loads of mosquitoes. I arrived at eleven that evening with no idea of where I was going to sleep. I knew the city of Ilhabela was quite expensive and figured I might just head to a beach and the spend night on the sand. Luckily for me I met a friendly Brazilian girl who offered me a room and even better yet her friend offered me dinner which I graciously accepted. The next day I loaded up my bag with food and supplies and headed over ... read more

Though I am not yet rich or famous for that matter, I have decided when I have such funds Paraty is where I would like to be. Though not in a simple house, not even a small island but a big one with its own castle. Though my fantasy may never come true it was hard not to imagine it. Passing by forts from the days of old now reconstructed into beautiful homes on some amazing island I was in awe of whoever lived such a lifestyle. But I would settle for a little house near the beach in the quaint colonial town. It took some time to get used to, but walking down the cobbled streets made my imagination soar to a time when this little town was known for pirates, slave trading and gold ... read more

Oh, the Festa Junina. Though ridiculously dressed and sporting a mustache I could not help but to enjoy myself in this traditional Brazilian Party. It was on a four day Brazilian holiday that I found myself among a group of thirty Brazilians soaking up the sun in a small ranch an hour from São Paulo. For me it was a good opportunity to get some Portuguese practice before I heading back to the states. To say the least the days consisted of eating churrasco, making drinks, playing soccer and sitting by the pool. I could not help but feel a glutton eating nothing but meat for four days, but considering it was my last chance to eat churrasco for quite awhile I did not complain. The ranch itself was beautiful, green and had everything short of ... read more

Although it was not easy to leave the leisure lifestyle of the wine drinking Mendocinos, eventually we had to say goodbye to Mendoza and head over the Andes into Chile. This took a bit of patience after a snow storm closed the pass which peaks at 4500 meters (14400 ft). The storm also made impossible a suicide style attempt on the summit I failed to reach the week before. Though attempting in one day what we failed to do in ten may have been just that, suicidal. Over the mountains and through the snow we headed to Santiago. The mountains in the Cordon Plata had a fresh blanket of snow and now appeared much more formidable than the week before. We arrived in Santiago after a extended bus ride due to the closure of the pass ... read more

As I rushed out of my tent to relive dinner I could not remember what it felt like before this altitude induced sickness came on. It was at this point I started to be afraid that the 19000+ ft summit of Cerro Plata was out of reach. I few days earlier we arrived in Mendoza; a pleasant town known for its wine and high mountains. Since I was unable to make an attempt on Aconcagua due to timing and money my friend Tim (the swiss guy I met in Ushuaia) and I decided to try some less intensive yet still daunting peaks just out of Mendoza. And so it was that despite recovering from a cold I began the two hour ride to the base of the mountains. Though our initial camp was not very ... read more

If any random person suddenly found themselves in Buenos Aires without having any idea where they were it would take just a matter of seconds to discover the fact that they are in the tango dancing, wine drinking and beef eating capital of South America. Buenos Aires, with its European style and unique culture fits the description perfectly, aptly earning its title as the Paris of South America. Being the hub of my travels in Argentina I ended up spending a good deal of time in the bustling capital. Distinctly different than most other cities in South America, Buenos Aires has a certain charm and style that almost anyone can enjoy. To be honest I found the city a bit overwhelming at first, but over time it tends to grow on you. More European than anything, ... read more

After my college buddy Jason arrived from the states for a quick vacation we took a quick tour of Buenos Aires. The usual steak dinner and wine ensued as I tried to bring Jason up to speed on what I knew of Argentinean culture. We did a bit of touring of some gardens and the usual sights and then headed out of the city by bus to the town Rosario, four hours north of Buenos Aires. Rosario is known for its passive river and laid back atmosphere as well as being the birthplace of the Argentinean flag and Che Guevara. We did not have much time in the city so we headed to check out the river where we enjoyed the calm atmosphere and younger crowd. Because we arrived in the middle of the week, finding ... read more

Heading out of Puerto Natales I jumped on a bus headed to Ushuaia, the "southern most" city in the world (Depending on what you define as a city). On a quick bus change I ran into to Tim, a Swiss guy I met in Torres Del Paine and we quickly got to sharing our adventures stories. The landscape this far south resembles that what I imagine Alaska might at such an latitude to the north; barren, wind blown and cold. A few hours into the ride we boarded a boat to transfer us over the Straight of Magellan. Accompanied by both wind and dolphins it was kind of impressive to be crossing this historic channel. As we neared Ushuaia the landscape became a bit less bleak as forest and snow covered peaks began to dot the ... read more

Well out of Argentina and into Chile. We arrived in the small port town of Puerto Natales a bit tired but excited about the new stamp in the passport. The town was, well dreary and a bit depressing. So it did not take much time to decide and head out to the famous Parque Torres Del Paine as soon as possible. So after a night in a creepy hotel we headed out with bags full of food and supplies. The weather welcomed us with cold showers and strong winds, but all more the adventure. Arriving in the park I was horrified to find out that the entrance was US$30 per person and you had to pay for most camping sites. On a budget like mine that is the same price as staying at hostels with beds ... read more
