Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

I only realized yesterday that I haven't updated in more than a week, so I'll do my best to recap what's been going on. I'm in Lima right now, as of last night, and just relaxing. Two weeks ago in Huaytara I worked in a school called Muchic for 3 days, reactivating computers and working with the kids. Then last week I worked all of Tuesday in Acco (Ah-ho), by myself. I got there and the teacher expected me to teach the kids all about the laptops, so I tried. There wasn't electricity that day, a common situation, so the batteries [View Full Entry]

Ok, so we intended to write our final blog in Lima, but just did not get around to it. So, we are writing it from home. So our last days in Lima were a bit of a tired blur. Very large and crowded city, but we were staying in a nice little hostel in a suburb near the beach, with a friendly greeting dog. Day one was spent relaxing and repacking (which is when Justin found out his phone was stolen, as well as his camera. Both were taken from his checked bags in La Paz. Once home he found out [View Full Entry]

Peru - There and Back Again Tuesday 14th July 2009 After a very comfortable night in the Hotel Santa Cruz, it's time for a bit of exploring of Lima and all the sights and sounds. We headed out to explore the shore road, because I reckoned I could remember where everything was. Including the supermarket where I needed to stock up on loo rolls for the weeks ahead. After a bit of ducking and diving - 2 hours of ducking and diving - we did reach the supermarket. Ooohhhh!!!! The miracle of air conditioning. All stocked up, and time to head [View Full Entry]

Peru - There and Back Again Monday 13th July 2009 La Gran Aventura del Peru. And so the journey begins once more. Readers who know me, know the impact that my visit to Peru last year made and will no doubt not be surprised that I have returned. Peru is a country of stark contrasts, with the indisputable beauty of the High Andes and the spectacular Macchu Picchu which should never fail to have an impact on any one who sees it. The historical Cusco and the Spanish influences which have changed and shaped much of the country. On the flip [View Full Entry]

Window into hospitality
Going south for the summer? This was often the question posed to me. Quickly followed by, "Are you going alone?" "Yup to both," I'd say, full of doubt mixed with excitement. Rest assured that I heard my fair share of "be careful" sprinkled among the "Are you nuts?" assertions. I'd think to myself each time I reconsidered the experience, "Please, don't let this be something to add to my bad idea collection." I had been fortunate enough to make the acquaintance of and cultivate a friendship with an exceedingly endearing, cultured, and similarly semi-neurotic buddhist. His preferences [View Full Entry]

Lima has a population of 8 million and is divided into a number of sectors, many of which are too dangerous for even the police to patrol. Knowing this made us quite nervous about going there but we were based in the Miraflores area which is the main tourist haunt. Both here and the central square, Plaza de las Armas, had a heavy police presence. We set off early to visit the Huaca Pullcana, the ruins of a 1,500 year old civilisation, all of which remains today are walls and structures made of adobe bricks. We also negotiated the local buses, [View Full Entry]

Last day South America » Peru » Lima » Lima
Okay folks, I don´t know how many people have been actually following this blog, but clearly we are behind. Today is our last day in Peru, and we haven´t updated anything for days. But rest assured (1) there are several entries that are half completed, and (2) I´ll probably retroactively update with all the stories, pictures, etc. once we get home. We fly out tonight and should be back in Buffalo tomorrow afternoon. Until then, we´ve been putting off most of our shopping so we didn´t have to carry it around, so today is souvenier day! After we left Cusco we went on to head further north. A 20 Hours busride brought us first to Peru's Capital Lima situated in the desert on the west coast. The city doesn't have much to offer but really crazy heavy traffic and a rather unspectacular old town. One of the most worth seeing sights there is the waterpark that is colorfully illuminated in the evening. So only some 24hrs after we arrived in Lima we went on the 8hrs busride to Trujullo, a cute little town north of Lima, with some colonial buildings and some archeological sites around (which we [View Full Entry]

Tuk-Tuk!!! around almost everywhere in Peru

Burger King, McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken and a Pizza Hut. To describe Miraflores as the tourist area of Lima is an understatement. The flight went well and we made it safe and sound to Miraflores, Lima. We managed to share an extortionately expensive executivo taxi from the Airport with two English backpackers and as we arrived at our pre-booked bunkbeds in the Loki Hostel in Lima, out of the window was a blanket banner advertising McFlurries. We could have been in any major city. Loki Hostels are part of a growing chain of irish-ish hostels in Peru. Just after we bo [View Full Entry]
