Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

We made it to Lima. The hostel we had originally reserved didnīt appear to be there to pick us up, so we talked to a woman from another hostel and they had beds available for us. Itīs only 5 minutes from the airport so thatīs good since weīre basically just spending the night here and heading back to the airport in the morning to go to Puerto Maldonado to start our rainforest adventure. The flights were uneventful. We had a 6 hour layover in Newark, then a 7 hour flight, which Sarah slept through almost entirely. (I think she tookv too [View Full Entry]

Tim Version: * Checked out the centre of Lima a little more carefully this time. * Not a place for me really, just another capital. The not-robbed-this-time version: Lima! I keep passing through it but never stopping, but this time I'm here to travel. Arriving this time it was unfortunately around midnight so I organised with a Hostel to pick me up, and for the first time ever I was greeted by one of those guys at the airport carrying a sign with ny name on it! Kinda cool in one way, nice and official feeling, but in another a real [View Full Entry]

Hola from Peru! We are in Lima now and things have been going well. We had a great hostel that was only costing us like 7 dollars a night and we have been seeing what there is to see in Lima which isnīt a tonne but that was to be expected. We are leaving Lima today and heading down south by bus to see what they call the Ļpoor mans galapigosĻ and then to the Nazca lines and do some sandboarding ect. In Lima we saw a catabombs, where the presendent lives, some churches and the beach along Lima. It is [View Full Entry]

Compared to what we had heard about Lima, our experience was very nice. We didn't end up in the trunk of any cars or separated from our most valuable possessions either. This may have had a lot to do with our collective decision to take recommended taxis (taxi green is the best from the airport). This was made more affordable by the addition of a temporary 3rd traveling companion, Rea. She is from the Philippines, just 17 years old, and is traveling Latin America by herself after spending a year studying Spanish in Bolivia. We were on the same bus getting [View Full Entry]

Generally, James and I donīt make return trips - there are too many other places in the world to discover! But passing down the Pacific coast of Peru, overnighting in Lima was unavoidable, a city we had already visited five years previous. My overriding memory of Lima was that it was a kip and I could see why Paddington Bear left. Compared to the sunny heights of Cusco and Lake Titicaca it was indeed "darkest Peru". The city is afflicted for half the year with grey skies and a constant drizzle. Not a wet drizzle that can be deflected with an [View Full Entry]

This was my room at the hotel.
It first hit me when I nestled down into my tiny window seat on LAN flight 072, bound for Lima - My time in the Amazon was over. I had conflicting emotions as the doors on the plane closed. I was definitely happy to be going home, but I was already missing the forest and all of the mysteries hidden beneath its canopy. The plane was filled to capacity with a mixture of foreign tourists and Peruvians. I was surrounded by a group of American high school students who were returning home from a week-long educational trip to Cusco and the [View Full Entry]

May 29 - At last check, we left our heros after having completed their hike to Machu Picchu. After a full and wonderful nights sleep in a real bed, we awoke and headed to the airport for Lima. Upon arriving and walking up the jet way, a horrible stench filled our nostrils. It smelled as if someone had used the jetway as a toilet more than a few times. We found our luggage, haggled for a taxi, and walked outside. The first thing that hit us was that same horrible smell. It was a combination of urine and dead fish. Welcome [View Full Entry]
