Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

So here I am, after 9 weeks of waiting I am finally in Peru, and boy what a shock. But lets sart at the beginning. After having a few hours slepp Tuesday night I was up at 2.30 in the morning, at Heathrow by 4.30 in the morning and sadly in Peru at 6pm local time, which is midnight for you guys. So as you can imagine it's been one long day. And it's not even 9pm here now, whereas it should be almost 3am, so confusing. My flight was full of old people coming to Peru to explore on their [View Full Entry]

We´ve Arrived! South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Miraflores
Hola! We´re finally here in Peru! I guess our trip actually started on Tuesday when we went into London and spent the day with April seeing the sights and not being able to find a Nando´s anywhere! We had a nice stay at the Jury´s Inn hotel at Hatton Cross station so it was very close to Heathrow and we were able to get to and from London for the day. We woke up yesterday at 5am and got one of the first tubes out to Terminal 4 at 6am before getting on the plane to Houston, Texas which arrived at [View Full Entry]

Official Invitation
The 25 Year Reunion of Colegio Rosa de America, Class of 1984, was held on Saturday 08/22/09. This event was the main reason for my (our) trip to Peru and one that I had been looking forward for a long time. Of the approximately 120 girls who graduated Colegio Rosa de America in 1984, 40 of us were present at the Reunion Lunch. Following tradition, the Reunion Lunch also includes members of all the other classes as well as a few former teachers, who attend as special guests. Altogether, the event was attended by about 250 women; back then, Colegio Rosa [View Full Entry]

Con la familia
For Wednesday 08/19/09 the plan was to stop by my aunt and uncle’s house in Pueblo Libre and then go to a couple of museums. However, I had felt a bit iffy the night before and woke up achy, as if I was coming down with a cold. Ever the Type A, I loaded up on meds and decided to plow through. But when we got to my relatives’ home I felt I was fading. We scratched the museum outing, stayed for lunch at my relatives’, and headed back to the condo. I quickly got in bed to take a nap; [View Full Entry]

On Thursday 08/20/09 I woke up feeling great. I think I must have had a 24-hour bug the day before. However, Ben and Cathy began to have some GI events. I’ll leave it at that. I was glad that they hadn’t gotten it at all in the five days we were here; I, on the other hand, had started the very first day here. The plan for Thursday (if I’m involved, there’s always a plan) was to go to Museo de La Nacion and Museo de Oro. Ben and I would go over to Monica’s house and Monica, Cathy, Ben, and [View Full Entry]

At Huaca Pucllana
The three of us were feeling a lot better on Friday morning (08/21/09) but, still, we decided to take it easy. We putzed around the condo, grazing (yes, we finally had gotten some food) and watching TV, just like normal people do when they are ON VACATION. I gotta remember that. Around 2pm we headed over to Huaca Pucllana (Huaca means Sacred Place in Quechua, the language of the Incas), located in Miraflores. Huaca Pucllana was built by the Lima Culture around 600AD. It was built using adobe bricks, made of a mix of mud, clay, pebbles, and seashells. The architecture [View Full Entry]
