Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Dull & Grey :-( South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Miraflores
is the only description for Lima. The weather has been overcast the whole time we've been here, many of the buildings are painted in drab colours, and there's not much to do, although the Miraflores district we're staying in is nice. We'd expected interesting museums, galleries etc, but it wasn't to be. The Museo de la Nacion is housed in a huge building but only 3 floors have any exhibits, the Museo de la Inquisition is tiny and takes only an hour or so, the Museo de Arte is closed for renovation, and we're maxed out on colonial churches. Tonight we're [View Full Entry]

Loving Lima South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Miraflores
I arrived in Lima airport after a turbulent decent from the heights of Quito and was met by a Socio Adventures rep who drove me to my hotel which was in a picturesque coastal area of the city called Miraflores. By the time I had checked myself in and sorted myself out it was pushing 10pm so there was only really one thing on my mind... "Where can I eat?!" I explored the surrounding area and found a late-night shopping centre, literally hanging from a cliff-top, with restaurants by the dozen and a cheeky wee cinema. After some traditional Peruvian delicacies [View Full Entry]

The flight to London, Madrid and Lima were all bang on time which was superb. The only delay in the whole trip was the train from Musselburgh to Edinburgh Waverley......good old Scotrail!!!!!! On previous long haul flights the food has been pretty good but the food on the Madrid to Peru flight consisted of two cheese and ham sandwiches, four meatballs in tomato sauce and an individual trifle! Nice! Arrived in Peru and got a taxi to the Antigua Miraflores Hotel which is really nice. We'd read good reviews about the hotel on Trip Advisor and we weren't disappointed. It's an [View Full Entry]

One Month To Go South America » Peru » Lima
I've been doing research all day. Read blogs and travel sites etc and even the NHS' on immunization. (yellow Fever jab seems like a goopd idea though at £55 a pop it's really pricey.) There is a MASTA walk in centre in Margaret Street near Oxford Circus I might drag me there. 20th of August seems still so far, yet so near. Time is curiously relative I mean no amount of attitude asdjustmet makes the slitest bit of difference. You can will yourself all you want to live in the present...it won't work. I mean it doesn't for me. Anyhow, I [View Full Entry]

I only realized yesterday that I haven't updated in more than a week, so I'll do my best to recap what's been going on. I'm in Lima right now, as of last night, and just relaxing. Two weeks ago in Huaytara I worked in a school called Muchic for 3 days, reactivating computers and working with the kids. Then last week I worked all of Tuesday in Acco (Ah-ho), by myself. I got there and the teacher expected me to teach the kids all about the laptops, so I tried. There wasn't electricity that day, a common situation, so the batteries [View Full Entry]

Home at last South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Lima
Ok, so we intended to write our final blog in Lima, but just did not get around to it. So, we are writing it from home. So our last days in Lima were a bit of a tired blur. Very large and crowded city, but we were staying in a nice little hostel in a suburb near the beach, with a friendly greeting dog. Day one was spent relaxing and repacking (which is when Justin found out his phone was stolen, as well as his camera. Both were taken from his checked bags in La Paz. Once home he found out [View Full Entry]

Peru - There and Back Again Tuesday 14th July 2009 After a very comfortable night in the Hotel Santa Cruz, it's time for a bit of exploring of Lima and all the sights and sounds. We headed out to explore the shore road, because I reckoned I could remember where everything was. Including the supermarket where I needed to stock up on loo rolls for the weeks ahead. After a bit of ducking and diving - 2 hours of ducking and diving - we did reach the supermarket. Ooohhhh!!!! The miracle of air conditioning. All stocked up, and time to head [View Full Entry]

Peru - There and Back Again Monday 13th July 2009 La Gran Aventura del Peru. And so the journey begins once more. Readers who know me, know the impact that my visit to Peru last year made and will no doubt not be surprised that I have returned. Peru is a country of stark contrasts, with the indisputable beauty of the High Andes and the spectacular Macchu Picchu which should never fail to have an impact on any one who sees it. The historical Cusco and the Spanish influences which have changed and shaped much of the country. On the flip [View Full Entry]

Window into hospitality
Going south for the summer? This was often the question posed to me. Quickly followed by, "Are you going alone?" "Yup to both," I'd say, full of doubt mixed with excitement. Rest assured that I heard my fair share of "be careful" sprinkled among the "Are you nuts?" assertions. I'd think to myself each time I reconsidered the experience, "Please, don't let this be something to add to my bad idea collection." I had been fortunate enough to make the acquaintance of and cultivate a friendship with an exceedingly endearing, cultured, and similarly semi-neurotic buddhist. His preferences [View Full Entry]
