Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Day 20 South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Lima
Huacachina So we got up at about 8:30 so I can go more sandboarding. Dad didn´t want to go, so he took a vineyard tour instead. So he left and about a half hour later, I left for the dune buggy/sandboarding tour. Before going into the dessert, we all have to sign a manifest, as I looked down the list, there were 2 Americans, 2 spaniards, 1 french, 1 german, and 1 dude from Japan! I was so impressed I said ¨Hola! Bejour! Gutentag! Konichiwa! Hey whats up?¨ The tour before was pretty nice, but this guy knew how to use [View Full Entry]

Day 17 South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Lima
Lima Day 17 wasn´t much for me at least. I woke up around 1 pm and immediately got dressed for a house party at some family´s house. After getting full dressed and ready, it was such a dire emergency for me to take a shower at that very moment, so I went back up and showered even though we were kinda already late. There were plenty of people there to talk most of the party, we had to make a 2 hour toast to the couple who were having a baby. My soda was flat by the time we actually toasted, [View Full Entry]

Day 14-16 South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Lima
Yeah yeah mom, I´m alive. I´ve just been busy. Day 14 wasn´t much. We woke up late contrary to what my dad wanted to do. We left and found on nice restaurant on a balcony and ate some chicken. My dad caught what I had and doesn´t look good. Barely felt like eating. We came back to the hostal and played chess till it was time to go. My dad played the sick game and gave me the big backpack. We took an earlier flight again and arrived in Lima around 7:30. Did the same thing as last time, arrived and [View Full Entry]

My mom said its the day of "lasts".. the last walk with the dog, the last lunch out, the last supper... yet oddly enough, I don't even feel like I'm leaving. I know that I won't be here tomorrow, but I don't even have a picture in my mind of where I will be tomorrow and what I will be doing. In a way this is advantageous: since I do not have a pre-existing image of what my experience of Peru will be like, I will not be disappointed that my mental image did not match my experience. Something else that [View Full Entry]

So when planning our trip to South America Sharon had a few specific requests of places she had to visit Lima being one of them. I duly promised that we could visit despite all that I had heard about the city and non of it being positive. Anyway on our travels round various people were able to confirm what I had already heard about the city and Sharon became less and less bothered about staying in the city. In the end we left Ica on our way to Trujillo and ended up having a 9 hour layover in Lima and so [View Full Entry]

Dull & Grey :-( South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Miraflores
is the only description for Lima. The weather has been overcast the whole time we've been here, many of the buildings are painted in drab colours, and there's not much to do, although the Miraflores district we're staying in is nice. We'd expected interesting museums, galleries etc, but it wasn't to be. The Museo de la Nacion is housed in a huge building but only 3 floors have any exhibits, the Museo de la Inquisition is tiny and takes only an hour or so, the Museo de Arte is closed for renovation, and we're maxed out on colonial churches. Tonight we're [View Full Entry]

Loving Lima South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Miraflores
I arrived in Lima airport after a turbulent decent from the heights of Quito and was met by a Socio Adventures rep who drove me to my hotel which was in a picturesque coastal area of the city called Miraflores. By the time I had checked myself in and sorted myself out it was pushing 10pm so there was only really one thing on my mind... "Where can I eat?!" I explored the surrounding area and found a late-night shopping centre, literally hanging from a cliff-top, with restaurants by the dozen and a cheeky wee cinema. After some traditional Peruvian delicacies [View Full Entry]

The flight to London, Madrid and Lima were all bang on time which was superb. The only delay in the whole trip was the train from Musselburgh to Edinburgh Waverley......good old Scotrail!!!!!! On previous long haul flights the food has been pretty good but the food on the Madrid to Peru flight consisted of two cheese and ham sandwiches, four meatballs in tomato sauce and an individual trifle! Nice! Arrived in Peru and got a taxi to the Antigua Miraflores Hotel which is really nice. We'd read good reviews about the hotel on Trip Advisor and we weren't disappointed. It's an [View Full Entry]

One Month To Go South America » Peru » Lima
I've been doing research all day. Read blogs and travel sites etc and even the NHS' on immunization. (yellow Fever jab seems like a goopd idea though at £55 a pop it's really pricey.) There is a MASTA walk in centre in Margaret Street near Oxford Circus I might drag me there. 20th of August seems still so far, yet so near. Time is curiously relative I mean no amount of attitude asdjustmet makes the slitest bit of difference. You can will yourself all you want to live in the present...it won't work. I mean it doesn't for me. Anyhow, I [View Full Entry]
