So long family-style living in our sweet Miraflores home, and hello Hostel life! At times it could be confused with "hostile life", but we've been pretty lucky so far, meeting lots of folks from all over. It was so nice emerging from the smoggy Lima air - it was so dirty at times that when we washed our clothes the water was a disturbing colour. Throw in some bird guano accidents and we were almost ready to ditch our clothes and start fresh. When Nancy traveled in the UK a while back she took a Hop On-Hop Off type bus and loved it. At the spanish school we stumbled across Peru Hop, a similar bus tour company that is geared towards backpacking travelers looking to see all the sites but with flexibility to stay as long ... read more

The flight from Denver was a full day of travel that went smoothly and allowed for lots of movie watching. At the Lima airport we were greeted pleasantly by our pre-booked taxi driver who was waiting for us with our names on a sign, we felt like high rollers! She got us safely (although her van took a beating) to our home stay location in Miraflores, a region of Lima about an hour of adventurous driving through thick traffic from the airport. There we were greeted by our host, a super sweet woman who has a fantastic house where we stayed the entire week during our spanish school. Our spanish school was a well-run agency about a half hour walk from our new house. From Monday to Friday we spent a half day at the school, ... read more

Another horror bus ride terminated at 5.30am after a few hours sleep we headed into the faccinating colonial heart of world heritage listed Arequipa. This place is just as attractive as Cusco, is much larger and is better value for money. Tourist numbers are also much lower here which is refreshing when visiting the city's major attractions. Arequipa the white city is at least 500 years old and sits in the shadow of the perfect cone shaped 5822 metre El MistI volcano. The old town is centred around the Plaza de Armas and features a huge cathedral built from volcanic sillar and the slightly smaller Iglesia de La Compania an interesting Jesuit church. Our first stop was an atm followed by one of the second story restaurants that dominate the Western side of Plaza de Armas, ... read more

As always, before a new group of volunteers comes we have a free week during which we do a bit of work but I also take the opportunity to travel a bit. This time I went to Lima. I was very well surprised by this city as I had not heard the best things about it. I really enjoyed it though. I stayed in the hipster area called Barranco, its really cute and had a great burrito take away place. On the first evening I went to parque de la réserva which is à Park full of fountains and when it gets dark they lighten up! Was really cool! The next day I walked around the historical centre and met up with Jessica in the evening who works for windaid but had to stay in Lima ... read more

So Lima is the capital of Peru, and has around 10 million people. Despite this, the only form of public transportation is bus or taxi. A subway is on the horizon for 2021 but you can imagine the traffic issues they have. The roads are average in places and cars often drive on the wrong side of the road, forming their own lanes or trying to make up time in the traffic. Pedestrians do get walk signs however some drivers ignore them which makes crossing the road interesting! I'm staying in Miraflores, one of the safest districts which is 3 districts away from lima district where the old town and many attractions are. I took a half day city tour today and while driving from Miraflores to Lima I noticed an innovative use of the centre ... read more

Day 1 – Lima to Cusco The Tuesday before we left was set to be an evening of setting intentions and excitement for the upcoming adventure. Quite honestly, it was a mess of an evening and truly set a bitter tone all the way up to our layover in Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday. However, as we had a 7 hour layover, we took the opportunity to Uber to Hollywood Beach and the sun and open air really cleared the shit out a bit. I’ve never left the airport during a layover, but I have to say it was well worth it. Arriving in Lima at 11:00pm, we slowly made our way through immigration and customs and then paid 50 soles (even though our Couchsurfing host told us to catch a taxi outside of the airport for ... read more

Getting into Lima, turns out my timing for once was really good. After an easy five hour ride from the desert, I showed up the night before Peru's Independence day. This of course meant that the streets were alive with celebration and good times. I wasn't really planning on staying here very long as I've had my fill of big cities and I really just want to make my way North to Ecuador, so I was glad to have a little bonus excitement whist in the city. Of course within fifteen minutes or so of dropping my bags off at the hostel, I set out wandering and was adopted by a group of Peruvians reveling in their holiday and they were more than happy to let me join. Waking up the next morning with a mild ... read more

Finally we were in Huacachina. This is a desert playground complete with sand buggies and a nice lake oasis in the desert. The area is very popular with locals and tourists alike. Since it was a Peruvian holiday, marking the day of independence from the Spanish everyone was away, meaning Huacachina was rammed. We were sharing our dorm room with a load of girls from Lima, on holiday there. Once out of Ica we headed to Huacachina, this desert oasis has crazy loud 4x4 type sand buggy rides and sand boarding down hills, the sunsets are pretty spectacular as well. We then headed to Pisco to check out the islas ballestas, described as the poor man's Galapagos, here you saw the candelabra, seals and many birds but I did feel may be calling it the poor ... read more
