Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Paragliders over the Lima Coastline
Paragliders over the Lima Coastline
I snapped this photo with my trusty point-and-shoot. The view as the sun faded into the horizon was absolutely fantastic. Even the locals were out in force to see it.
I'm back in the airport. It's 4:22 and I've been up for about two hours now. Needless to say I didn't get much sleep, but in about three hours I'll be in the Inca capital of Cusco. I have been extremely lazt the last couple of days and last night discovered why. I've come down with a pretty nasty little cold -- sore throat, congestion and some sneezy, and feeling really tired. I'm a little better after drinking some orange juice here in the airport Starbucks, but I need to sleep and get some rest to be ready for the next [View Full Entry]

[View Full Entry]

Pachacamac

I’m back in Lima. Actually it’s Miraflores, an upscale suburb of Lima that is very popular with tourists, very safe, and is very much like any U.S. city. I got to the hotel about noon and immediately went to KFC for lunch. I know that’s sad, but I had to have some American food for a change. I'm pretty spoiled after having internet access last week. My hotel here (Hotel las Palmas) is comfortable and convenient, but it doesn't have wi-fi so I have to hike over to a nearby Starbucks to access the internet. The last couple of days haven’t [View Full Entry]

Iglesia San Francisco

Our Flight - Day 1 South America » Peru » Lima » Lima
Well where to start, flight from Albury to Sydney only took 37 minutes and we ended up staying at the Sydney International airport, pretty basic accommodation with basic meals, great for a one night stay and that's about it. Our flight to NZ was good and only took a few a hours and smooth all the way, when flying in I expected to see mountains but all we saw was water, rain and clouds but i am sure it would be a great place to visit for 8 hours but not now. We were unloaded off the plane shuffled into a [View Full Entry]

Miraflores
Our bedroom at Miraflores house
After we both slept for around 5-6 hours, we had some quick breakfast at the lodge and decided to walk into down town "Miraflores" which is the better part of Lima. Around 20 minutes from our Hostel you come across the the cliff tops over looking the Pacific Ocean, the coast line is always surrounded in a sea mist this time of the year, other than that a very spectacular coast and a top spot for surfers. The beach is not sand but very large black pebbles, caused by what I haven't figured out yet and wouldn't think about sun baking [View Full Entry]

We finished our training yesterday and it was fine. We got to work with the laptops more in the morning, went to lunch, and then tried to take them apart and put them back together. We did it but it was quite the experience. I didn't take one apart but I put back together someone else's, which was informative and man there are lots of little screws! At lunch I had some water that came in a bottle but we suspect that they filled it in the facet and my stomach felt a bit gross after, but nothing too bad. That [View Full Entry]

Killing time at Starbucks
Killing time at Starbucks
A 6-hour overnight layover is tough without lots of caffeine and internet access, Fortunately, the ever-present Starbucks provided both in the Lima airport.
It’s almost midnight and I’ve made it to South America. I’m sitting in a Starbuck’s in the Lima airport killing time (only four hours left of my six-hour layover!) on the internet filling up with caffeine. The flight from Miami was nice. The food in first class was excellent - far too much for me to eat it all - and the trip through immigration, customs, and the LAN counter was uneventful. Even my luggage came off the carousel fairly quickly. The flight itself was uneventful, though I wish I had brought more to read. I unsuccessfully tried to sleep and [View Full Entry]

Yes, I'm safe and just fine. There are protestors here in Lima from the jungle who are protesting Alan Garcia, the president of Peru. They are peaceful and I am definitely in support of them, they are just trying to stop police brutality and protect their natural resources that the government is trying to take away by letting private companies in. For more information, go to the BBC. They'll do better job of saying what's going on. They've just had some rallies and blocked a few roads, nothing bad. I'll continue to update you and let you know that really I [View Full Entry]
