Hotel: Sol Melia (Lima, Peru) $59 We had arrived at the hotel by 8:30 AM, we went and had breakfast while they checked us in. The breakfast buffet was quite impressive, with the usual American offerings, along with tamales and lots of tropical fruit. We slept again for a few hours before heading out for lunch. It was Christmas Eve, so many of the museums and other sights were closed, although many of the shops and restaurants were still open. The hotel recommended Jose Antonio restaurant (http://www.joseantonio.com.pe), a short walk from the hotel. The food was outstanding Peruvian creole, and reasonably priced. After lunch, I headed to the bus station to buy our tickets to Ica for the following day, Ormeno's Royal Class service. That evening, the hotel was having a Christmas dinner+show, we decided to ... read more

It's felt like ages since I last wrote but I guess that's just because so much has been happening. Right now we are in Nasca waiting for our overnight bus tonight to Arequipa, so I have a bit of a chance to write. I´m sorry if this is the first journal that you´ve got or you don´t get this one. I´m just adding addresses as I am able. We spent 2 whole days in Lima, mainly in a seaside suburb called Miraflores. It's pretty flash by local standards, but most tourists stay there because it's much safer than the rest of the city. There were some really nice parks, with beautiful flower beds and lush green grass, but I don't think you're allowed on it. By the end of the 2 days we had a pretty ... read more

Hi all, this is the first propper entry that I´ve made, so it may not go that smoothly, but bear with me, it´ll get better. The flight over from Aus was pretty good. Long, but good. I think it was about 35hrs all up, and we were glad to see the hotel in Miraflores, Lima for more than just one reason. Once we had cleared immigration and customs,(customs by the way consisted of handing a form to guy who obviously had no intention of searching anyone´s bags and looked like he just wanted to get everyone through so he could go home, a little diferent from Australia!) we headed out the departure gate and all of a sudden felt like rock stars. There was a mass of people yelling and holding signs, offering us taxis to ... read more

Well Lima was nice, a bit expensive but really quite a cool city. I was planning on doing a bit of Para-sailing and swimming at the beach while I was here but the weather has been a bit cold so that'll have to wait untill I'm a bit closer to the equator. Meanwhile I'm off up to Huaras tonight and plan on draging out my tent for a couple of days camping - but apparantly it's been snowing up there in the national park over the last couple of days so we'll see about that too. Hope everyones good back home, I miss you all a lot.... read more

this email will be unorganized and unedited. don´t have much time to write as well as my journalist friend loc. but here are my thoughts. this will also be long... (sorry augi, but you´re unemployed so you have time to read this). i´m just going to braindump... we´re having a great time in peru! i love this country already... so much culture, and the people are very friendly. i´m also practicing my spanish which is pretty fun. arrived in lima early at 530 am. we were looking for our driver, mr. sanchez, who was holding a sign that said "chi y lee" but we didn´t see him at first. he proceeded to walk in front of us and asked "are you mr. lee and miss. chi?". i asked him how he knew? he replied, "you look ... read more

Hola amigos, Here I am in Tumbes, just south of the Eduadorian border, sweltering to death. Spent the last 4 days in Lima staying with an American girl called Holly, who we met in Bolivia. She is working there as a teacher and lives in an extremely rich area. All the houses had big surrounding walls, even bigger mean-looking guard dogs, and big cheery security guards, armed with huge guns - eeek! I know they are there for my protection, but it is still freaky walking down the street and being watched by ten armed men! Being the swankiest area, restaurants were pretty pricey compared to other places, so one night we decided to stay in and cook our host a meal. Big mistake! We went along to the supermarket and bought tonnes of noodles, veggies ... read more
