The plane from Heathrow was delayed to Miami and we had to have a heated argument with US immigration officials to make our connection (put claire onto this obviously! they are such lovely people NOT) and even then only made it by running from one side of the airport to the other - most of the others trying to make the connection never made it. So we got to Lima, Peru, only to find our luggage was still in Maimi as american airlines (bless them) had assumed we wouldnt make it so not bothered to put our bags on the plane to Lima. So a day and a half in the same pants - nice! Bags eventually appeared late in Tues, seemingly unharmed but clearly gone though to look for god knows what. The luggage has ... read more

Well today, joined the tour that I had signed up for. We went for a tour around the centre of Lima. Even more crowds, noise, people, and, cars than Miraflores. Narrow streets, people selling pretty much anything on the streets. Lots of different types of architecture, colonial, neo colonial, copies of buildings in other parts of the world, buildings bought to Lima in pieces and reassembled here.... Went to the Plaza de Armas, people, pigeons, heat, crowds, honking horns ... I am blown away by the sheer number of people around. From the Plaza de Armas went to the Church and Monestary of San Francisco, (Saint Francis). Couple of interesting features ... catacombs ... with thousands of bones and skulls ... There is also a collanade around a garden with walls that are curved ... Not ... read more

Well have made it to Lima, Peru, 10 hour flight from Auckland to Santiago in Chile, 8 hour stop over in Santiago, then a 3 - 4 hour flight to Lima. Please bear in mind that this is being written after only getting a few hours sleep in the last three days. Arrived in Peru about 1130 pm local time. Hot, noisy, crowded airport, heaps of taxi drivers touting for business. Luckily had a taxi already arranged. The drive to the hotel like the airport was hot and noisy. Heaps of cars on the road, people on the streets, the use to the car horn seems to be an integral part of driving... Anyway got to the hotel, and everything was okay, finally got to sleep about 2 am. Today, too tired to do much, but ... read more

Funket mye bedre. Virkelig kult! Paa vei til Cuzco stoppet vi forst to netter i en liten by som het Pisco og besokte en oy som blir kalt mini-Galapagos pga sitt dyreliv. Interessent aa se, men ikke saa veldig spennende. ... read more

Arrival - Day Zero Its strange to think that this is the first overseas trip that I am really doing by myself. Every other time that I have travelled outside of Australia, it has been with spouse and when the children were at home, them as well. In the middle of the night last night, I arrived at Lima airport, and about 90 minutes later was getting out of the airport bus at this hotel. Tomorrow I join a Kumuka tour, and will overland over the next 20 days, ending up in Quito. Lisa, the tour guide, has rung and made arrangements to meet me, as it appears that I am the only one joining the group here at Lima. So there are no other pax here to share my concerns and expectations with, which was ... read more

going below the equator makes one feel like time has roleld back... the southern cross, a familiar yet distant memory stands out, as do the vistas, aromas and langauge technology has permeated the rich cultural structure of the decendants of the incas - internet by the sol, high speed, thousands of computers, thousands of people typing their anxieties, fears and hopes into the vastness of cyberspace... miraflores, the beach community, tourism center, controlled by the police as to not allow the euros´s and yen and dollars to flee the poor yet proud country politically, ¨Tony¨my new friend and shoe shine specialist, informs me that at least fujimori was a theif, made no pretenses, but shared the spoils with the people. the curent president, a ´cholo´from the department of ancash, made promises to help the other indigineous ... read more

Into the day… Surrounding the ‘pizza street’ are what appears to be an ocean of bodies/ all young, dark and beautiful. Walk down the street and on your left are lovely dark skinned young women soliciting business… not for sex, but for me to come into the perspective restaurant and have dinner. The activity got heavy in Miraflores at about ten at night, and went until about four in the morning. I know this because the window of my hostel * USD$25 per room* faces the street and I could hear the buzz of the youth and traffic before I passed out of carbon monoxide or exhaustion. Amazingly, at around four in the morning, people were still out enjoying themselves, the people washing the street with water and brooms were busy, and the lights in the ... read more
