It was Helen´s idea that I do this travelblog thingy. I found this website pretty easily. All I needed to set it up was an email address, a name and a nickname. First two I already have, but I don´t think anyone really calls me by a nickname anymore. I´ve had to resort to the name which the boys in my class at All Hallows referred to me by amongst themselves when we were about 13-15: Beamish. It refers to my forehead, which used to be a bit shiny for some reason - must have been a teenage thing. You could also have called me "Shiny" at the time, which has a certain simple elegance, I think. I very much hope that doesn´t stick when I get back, though. Please still call me by my actual ... read more

We finally made it! The flight was long, very long. We both got only a few hours of sleep in Detroit. We are tired, cranky, but we eventually made it to lima. We hit the sack at 1h00 am. ... read more

Sunday 8th May 2005 : Plane to Lima Although I had asked for the hostel to order a taxi to take us to the airport this was not actually the case. After breakfast the receptionist strode into the street and had some difficulty flagging a taxi. Finally he grabbed a ‘chiquito’, what I thought was a Fiat Seicento but was actually a tiny Daewoo. It was cosy with the rucksacks but it was only a short trip to the airport. Flight fine but our expected airport pickup was nowhere in sight at Lima. I called the hostel and 20 mins or so later Manuel arrived to take us to Miraflores. This was the first taxi-ride I have ever had where the driver locked all the doors once we were in. Lima was not a pretty site, ... read more

It could have been anywhere, it just happened to be Lima. Sometimes you arrive at a big hostel at the perfect moment to catch a wave of pure madness, that is exactly what happened to me in Barranco, Lima. I never, ever, intended to go to Lima. I chose to believe the overwhelming majority of information that I had come across which had made it sound dirty, dangerous and generally without appeal. My plan was always to skip straight through the city, if possible, and to see nothing more than was visible from the bus window. This all changed when my twisted knee started seriously interfering with simple things like going up and down stairs and I decided that I needed to find a good doctor to take a look at it. I figured that my ... read more

Tomorrow I leave Lima and Peru ... so thought I would write up some final thoughts, but first ... Spent the 2 or 3 hours this morning at the Museo Nacional de Arqueologia, Antropologia e Historia Del Peru. The National Archaeological, Anthropological, and History Museum of Peru. It is a around a 10 to 15 minute taxi ride from Miraflores, and as I have probably made aparent before, there are plenty of taxis willing to take you anywhere. (As well as honking their horns for any reason, (and perhaps as an alternative to slowing up when going through intersections, or using indicators when turning or changing lanes) they also honk their horns to tout for business. Anyway the Museum was pretty good, covers some of the Archaeological and Anthropological history of Peru, and also the more ... read more

After I wrote my previous entry, wandered around Miraflores, it was around 6pm and starting to get dark, but there were heaps of people and cars still on the streets, shops and restaurants were still open. In Parque Kennedy there was music, and people were dancing with a big group of spectators. Was getting dark, but it did not feel unsafe. Walking back to the B&B, noticed a few things: 1 - People were still in their little kiosks, or carts, or bicycle carts selling things, - water, softdrinks, lollies, different types of food. It was a bit depressing to see a lady with here cart full of what looked like home made food parked up in front of Dunkin Donuts. How can she make a living competing with a chain like that? I wonder if ... read more

Moved out of the tour group hotel into a local B&B, still in Miraflores. The owner was really good and welcoming, and had arranged breakfast for me. (I did not have the heart to refuse even though I had already had breakfast). Really excellent service, he even emailed me a couple of days earlier to make sure I had my transport from the airport arranged. He gave me some maps of things to see in Lima, and even called a taxi to take me to the Museo de la Nacion. National Museum. Really good. Got a guide from the Museum (for 10 soles) who could speak English and he took me around the different exhibits. The museum covers the cultures prior to and including the Incas. It might have been a good idea to go on ... read more

Flight back from Cuzco to Lima was only an hour and quite uneventful. Spent a couple of hours around Miraflores doing nothing in particular. Final dinner with the tour group before everyone goes separate ways. Sad that the the tour is over, but happy that had the opportunity for a great tour around Peru.... read more

Okay, so spent the afternoon wandering around Cuzco. Cuzco was the Inca Capital, and full of Inca palaces. You can see a lot of Inca Stonework, which usually forms the base of buildings, and on top you see Spanish Colonial architecture. When the Spanish arrived they used the original Inca work as the foundations for their own buildings, hence the conbination of styles. I have to say the Inca work makes the Spanish look quite crude. Nevertheless there are some excellent Spanish Cathedrals around the main square. The tour guide said that Cuzco was a city prone to earthquakes. When earthquakes occurred the Spanish architecture was severely damaged, but the Inca work remained in place. Had lunch in a restaurant overlooking the main square for about $5US, (if it was the main square in Venice you ... read more
