A day before leaving Seattle for Lima, I stopped at Magus Used Bookstore and picked up a volume titled "An Area of Darkness" by Nobel Prize Winner U.S. Naipaul. The author, a Trinidad-born Indian now living in London, recounts his first trip back to India, where he was, in a sense, assulted by the sounds, smells, and attitudes he enountered there. As I follow Naipaul´s journey into places both familiar and exotic, I am comforted to know that there are others who have been stricken as I have by situations that at times make no sense at all, and by landscapes and people that are at once beautiful and imperfect. My very first impression of Lima, upon stepping outside of the airport at 11 pm was "It smells like fire." And the sky was indeed orange. ... read more

I arrived in lima today. I arrived at Lima centro and stayed at the Plaza Hotel. The price for a double suite was pretty cheap, 70 soles which works out to be about 20 Canadian, hot water and Breakfast included. I find the city to be very polluted, which is difficult to breathe. I went to chinatown for lunch..lol ..i am chinese so i had to go there first. Chinese food is nothing like it is here. The taste is soo bland. People smoking in the restuarant ( as if there wasn't enough pollution around). Lima is a city of chaos. Billions of people all around, stores everywhere. You can find an internet cafe on almost every street. The plazas, statues, and churches are beautiful. Parts of the city look really nice, where other parts are ... read more

August 29, 2005 It´s 5AM and we are in the Lima airport. In a foggy valium haze we manage to find info on a hostel and grab a cab to Miraflores. We go back to sleep for several hours. Maybe we should have split a valium?? When we finally walk downstairs there are 2 tour guides waiting for us in the lobby. Have they been here since we checked in 5 hours ago? We walk to the Brazilian Embassy to get my visa only to find out that they are closed for 2 days due to a local holiday. We are stuck in Lima till Wednesday. The smog here is enough to choke a horse. We are frustrated and there isn´t much we wanted to do in Lima. We visit a few museums, shop and work ... read more

The scenery was pretty crap too! So you can imagine my relief when i ... read more

We arrived in Lima at 9:30 and headed to our hostel. Our hostel was not what we expected. We were a little afraid to sleep there. It was in a safe neighborhood, but it was a little rustic (that is being nice) We left as soon as we could to eat and shop the markets. I decided to brave it and get the Cervice (fish and shellfish cooked solely by the juice of a lime) I forgot to mention that I have been risky with my food choices. I have had sangia twice which has fruit. I have had Mojitos with mint and ice cubes.....KNOCK ON WOOD....no diarhea or food illnesses. I attribute this to these biobeads that I am taking. They have acidopholis and other good bacteria that your intestinal tract need to fight off ... read more

Ok, so we´ve been planning this trip for months. In fact maybe longer. It´s been 15 years since the last time my family and I´ve been to Peru, and I´m really not sure quite what to expect. Nick and I have been doing a lot of research, reading up on different things we´d like to do, places we´d like to see. So to finally be getting ready for this trip was almost like a dream. Packing wasn´t as swift as we hoped it would be...but we managed...we think. At least we did better than my parents. They were still packing up until the very last minute. But that wasn´t the worst part of the preparation. Our flights from Newark to Lima were all secure and we had our confirmation printed out, and in hand. But I ... read more

So I broke the first rule of traveling, I let the outside world affect my trip. I come to these developing countries to balance my life as much as to help the people here. These trips make me put my own life into perspective, and make me realize that the little things that get me down are really no big deal. But somehow yesterday I lost sight of all that. I let the combination of a few events overwhelm my emotions. Events that were really no big deal. I thank everyone for their comments, and the people I spoke with yesterday for listening to me. Thanks for putting me in check! Today, things are much better. I am back in Lima, and will be heading back to Ayacucho in the morning for an extra week of ... read more

I could not sleep at all last night. I seriously found myself online responding to work e-mails about how to manage the channel business at midnight. What a pathetic way to spend a night in Lima! But this morning I was up at the crack of dawn, and on the road to exploring the massive city of Lima. Julie met me at my hotel around 9am just as I was finishing breakfast. Our tour guide picked us up shortly after, and we were on our way. We went to an archeological site on the southern border of Lima. This site has been excavated since the late 1800s and they have not even scratch the surface (please forgive the spelling, I am on a Spanish keyboard). This site was the equivalent of Mecca of the pre-Columbian cultures ... read more

Julie, a friend that I met in Tanzania last year, is stuck here until Tuesday with me! There are also two other girls that are stuck here as well, but we don't know where they are. So Julie came and woke me up today and we walked out to the main strip. There were thousands of people around and the streets were blocked off. I guess they are celebrating their Independence Day this weekend, even though the real Independence Day is not until July 28th. The parade was just getting started this afternoon, and has been going well into the night. In fact, it's 7:30pm now, and I can still hear the fireworks booming outside. They sound like bombs going off across the hall! I should still be out there enjoying all of this, but I ... read more
