Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Yes, I'm safe and just fine. There are protestors here in Lima from the jungle who are protesting Alan Garcia, the president of Peru. They are peaceful and I am definitely in support of them, they are just trying to stop police brutality and protect their natural resources that the government is trying to take away by letting private companies in. For more information, go to the BBC. They'll do better job of saying what's going on. They've just had some rallies and blocked a few roads, nothing bad. I'll continue to update you and let you know that really I [View Full Entry]

Traveling on bus into the desert.
Thursday, June 11, 2009 We left Miraflores to make our way south on the Panamerican Highway to Ica. We finally made it into the desert. It is quite amazing. The photos do not give justice to the scenery. It is much like you would see on television. We are amazed!!! We made it to Ica around 6 PM and the people that work at the Cruz del Sur bus station told us that we should not stay in Ica because it is very dangerous for foreigners. So they whisked us away to Huacachina, a better place about 5 minutes away. Once [View Full Entry]

Pyramid of the Limas
Today, we went on the tour in the morning and then in the afternoon we went to Huaca Pucllana. It is an adobe pyramid of the Lima culture dating from AD 400. It is currently being excavated by resident archeologists and probably will be for another 20 years. It was pretty amazing, about the size of 16 hectares. I bought a new camera today! We just came now to download some pictures to this blog and the batteries died. Can you believe it? I will have to post them tomorrow. It figures that the batteries that came with the camera would [View Full Entry]

ĄBuenos dias! Well a long story short, Sunday night at 11:30pm I got off standby and on to the plane to Peru. I don't sleep very well on planes so the one hour of sleep that I did get was surprising, but hardly enough. After landing around 5am local time, I located my bag (it had flown on to Peru without me even though they said it didn't, but luckily I found it anyways) and got a way overpriced taxi to the hotel. I was okay paying for it though cause it was 7am, I was exhausted and they did a [View Full Entry]

We made it to Lima last night around 11pm. The flight was delayed in Fort Lauderdale for about an hour. We were worried that our driver would not be at the airport when we made it through customs. Once off of the plane we were sent through immigration which took forever. Every airport worker had a mask on. It was overkill. Macayla said she felt like a germ waiting to infect. I guess they are really scared of the swine flu. We finally made it through immigration and then customs. There was a man in a full suit holding a sign [View Full Entry]

Greeting from Lima! I have returned to Lima for the first time since August of 2006. It is wonderful to be back here again for many reasons. One being to practice my Spanish. After all, it is my profession, and I would be doing a huge disservice to my students if I didn't sharpen my skills. Secondly, to rekindle old friendships. I made some valuable friendships here. We drank, we danced, we sang, we talked. Another reason for returning was for some unfinished business. In a country so geographically and culturally rich, you can't see everything in one, two, three or [View Full Entry]

Day 2 South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Miraflores
Peru is so much fun. I am so exhuasted that I canīt even remember what trip details I gave last time. Hopefully I donīt bore anyone who might be reading this. We had a slow moving morning on Saturday. Walked out with cameras, the hostel address (per advice of fellower travelers) and a small amount of money. Itīs amazing being able to walk out of your hostel and see the ocean. Unfortunately the weather is cloudy and hazy now. We left in search for breakfast having no idea where a cafe would be. We wondered along the clifs of Barranco for [View Full Entry]

Peru Day 1 South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Miraflores
I made it to Peru. The second flight had bumps all the way. I was so happy about that. We had a horrible movie, but luckily the 17/18 hour trip went by really fast. The airport was a typial non first world country. Walked out, and like Nigeria, there was a swarm of people waiting. Some had signs, but of course we didnīt see our driver right away. Walked around a bit, and eventually our hotel taxi driver appeared. Everyone was really friendly on our search too. Arrived at the hostel 30-40 minutes later. We definately thought we would be [View Full Entry]

Hello again, After 6 weeks of badgering, it is now Crozza's turn to write the blog... Arequipa After Machu Picchu we managed one more night in Cusco before jumping aboard a plane to Arequipa, Peru's 2nd city and a very pretty one at that. We spent the first day chilling, Lee and I went for a romantic meal where we were serenaded by some fellas with panpipes, charangas and a guitar while we got blitzed on Pisco Sours - a lethal bevvy containing strong alcohol and egg. Don't worry, it tastes better than it sounds and after a few I was [View Full Entry]

We made it to Lima. The hostel we had originally reserved didnīt appear to be there to pick us up, so we talked to a woman from another hostel and they had beds available for us. Itīs only 5 minutes from the airport so thatīs good since weīre basically just spending the night here and heading back to the airport in the morning to go to Puerto Maldonado to start our rainforest adventure. The flights were uneventful. We had a 6 hour layover in Newark, then a 7 hour flight, which Sarah slept through almost entirely. (I think she tookv too [View Full Entry]
