We Made it!! and what an adventure and a challenge for all of us and our little 2CV's it turned out to be. We travelled exactly 9,000 kms in our cars and 1,571 kms in the rental van before it got wrecked it in the motorway crash, so we did a total of 10,571 kms. During our two night stay in La Rioja, we met up with a few interesting people that also owned 2CV's, as they are still popular in Argentina. A local dentist named Mauricio, organised the local paper and the local radio to meet with us at 8.00am for interviews and photos. Paul took the cue, and chatted live on their breakfast program, with Mauricio translating as fast as he could, while others chatted with the news paper reporter and posed for photos. ... read more

We were not able to make it to Cachi, from San Antonio de Los Cobres as Ruta 40 forced us to return and take another route down to Salta and onto Cafayate. The story so far, after a couple of nights in San Pedro de Atacama, we were ready for the challenge of Paso Sico over the mountain to San Antonio de Los Cobres. This pass turned out to be one of the most spectacular we have tackled, but we sure as hell had our fair share of corrugations, created by the huge trucks that ply this pass. We arrived in San Antonio just on dark and had time to get Paul's puncture fixed at the local Gomeria (tyre man) and check into our hotel before darkness set in. The next day we wanted to pick ... read more

Here we are all back together in San Pedro de Atacama after some delays and abandoning Allan and Tony in Arica. We had a great couple of days in Arequipa, spending our last night with Linton and Heather at a roof top Resturant above the plaza. Both Linton and Rosco making short work of a guinea pig ...... We farewelled Linton and Heather as we departed the hotel enroute to Arica in Chile. This is a big day with a major border crossing on the last day of the Easter holiday, so we knew it was going to be busy. The cars were all going great, as we dropped down towards sea level for the first time since leaving Copiapo a few weeks ago. Somewhere in the wide desert expanse, we found ourselves alone - everyone ... read more

Well, we finally got beaten by big rocks and water as we tried to negotiate the Colca Canyon loop. We could have built a bridge, as we did in a previous Rocky Road Adventure, but it would have taken all day !! The fact that there has been so much rain and snow over the past few weeks, we were lucky to have got as far as we did. We headed off to Arequipa with our sun roofs wide open, enjoying the sunshine, as we climbed the mountain we could see big dark threatning clouds building in front of us, we stopped and secured that, lucky we did as within twenty minutes and as we got to the top of the mountain at 4840 meters we were driving through a snow storm. As we descended we ... read more

After an eary start to get out of La Paz before the trouble started we farewelled Cory as he took Heather and Linton to catch the bus to Puno we ground our way up the 1600 meters out of the city only to fight our way through the markets of Samo Alto. After clearing the city traffic we stopped for a smoko break at a nice new Plaza. We arrived to catch the ferry to find quite a que, so after about half an hour we were each allocated our own Ferry Barge, why we could not get all of us on on is beyond my comprehension, so is was game on to see who would get ther first. Allan was able to drop his back wheel down between the gaps in the decking, he had ... read more

Well we did all survive the Road of Death, well sort of, as we were returning from Coroico back to La Paz, Allan hit a big hole and snapped the front assembly on his car, which dropped the front left down to about 60mm off the road? We pulled off the busy road as it was getting dark after such a big day. What can we do now??? Well it took Cory about ten minutes to locate a welder about 100metres up the road, so we greased the front drive shaft as it was rubbing on the suspension arm and he drove up to the welder fellow to re weld the broken component. Cory stayed with him and I led the rest of us back to the hotel, with a little help from Karen (my GPS). ... read more

Hi all, here we are in Salta, the second biggest city in Argentina, we are here for two nights, mostly to recover from a lot of red wine, dust, huge lunches and a heap of fun. The little cars are going just great, except in the high altitude (was that a surprise? -Not). We have done a bit of maintainance here at the hotel, we have checked for loose nuts and bolts, greased king Pins and oiled knife blades. I have secured my battery, Paul has changed a jet into carburettor! to a smaller one, so hopefully he will handle the high altitude an bit more efficiently. Yesterday, we all checked our Spectro oil, before leaving Cafayate, and I stupidly did not lock down the filler cap (we all have to do this once!) so as ... read more

Here we are all safe and sound in Belen, Argentina. Considering the boat only berthed on Sunday, then the container transported on Monday, and we were driving North by Tuesday afternoon, was a great achievement, by all the people involved on our behalf, especially by Gerardo. We made a run for Tongoy, arriving around 10.30 pm. The next day was another big drive up Copiapo, but by doing that, we were back onto our original schedule. We left Copiapo at 8.00 am and got into Tinogasta at 7.30pm. This was a big day for us and the cars, we topped 4747 metres, with the Absolums, little Citrenetta gasping for every bit of thin air that was available, but with love and kind words from Paul, managed to crawl over the summit. See photo. We are all ... read more

So here we are in Vina del Mar which was supposed to be the starting point of our adventure, but due to the container arriving a week late, we picked up a rental van and headed North from Santiago up to Tongoy. We then took a day after our stay at Distante in the Pisco Valley and drove up to the Chile/Argentina boarder, as the rental company would not let us cross into Argentina, so we came back and spent the night in an old hotel in Vicuña. The next day we returned to the picturesque fishing village of Tongoy, via Andacolla. On Sunday we did the long drag back down to Vina de Mar. While returning the Van to Santiago, I was involved in a nose to tail smash on the motorway where everyone is ... read more

Now with the three little Citroen 2CV's neatly packed into a forty foot container, and one BMW moto that we are shipping for Lucas, all we have to do now is wait until it arrives in Valparaiso, Chile at the end of February. I am so glad the cars have gone, as now I can get on with other things around here that have been left behind while mucking around with the cars, as you do! Darbi Accessories have again been very good to us and have supplied all the Spectro oil that we will need over our 10,000 km expedition. Along with new oil filters and NGK Spark plugs, thanks again Terry, Steve and String for your support. Turtle Wax have also come to the party with lots of samples of their new Ice Synthetic ... read more
