Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Hey Everyone, I am going to start this travel blog up again and this time I promise that I will update it more often. For those of you that dont know I moved to Lima, Peru to find a job. I don't have a job yet, but I have a friend that is living here and I have a place to stay for a little while. As my friend Todd said, I pretty much illegally immigrated to Peru. I had an interview with a school today and it went well. They told me that they would like to hire me, but [View Full Entry]

Hi all! This has been a rollar coaster week for me. Monday I was emailing my Dad telling him to get me outta here because I didn’t think I could handle everything I was going through and Tuesday I was ecstatic because I made my first Peruvian friend.. I have had classes for two weeks now and already have one group project and presentation of a literary work in front of the class on Monday. Classes sure are a challenge. On Monday, the professor of one of my literature classes grilled all the international students on the first story we had [View Full Entry]

Hello hello hello. Long time no write. I have been in Peru, for longer than I thought I would be. Seven weeks if my maths serve me right. I was only supposed to be there for a month and then make my way to Ecuador. But it was not meant to be. Peru is a fabulous country and in seven weeks you barely scratch the surface. Nevertheless, we managed to fit quite a lot in the time we were there. We hiked to Machu Picchu, went to the Amazon Basin in Manu, hiked down the second deepest canyon in the world, [View Full Entry]

Hola hola hola! So I have now attended one full week of classes here in Peru. Whoopy...cough. (this typed with much sarcasm). They call this week shopping cart week because all the international students can go to different classes to see if they want to take them before they officially sign up. This has been pretty helpful after discovering a couple classes that I cannot get credit for, a couple professors who I could not understand a word out of, and a professor who started yelling at the entire class on the first day. I went to 8 different classes this [View Full Entry]

This blog is belated. You can tell that it is belated because the last one that I wrote was in April. Seriously April?! What is wrong with me? Okay, new goal for this school year. One blog a week. It may not actually happen but I am setting this as my goal anyway. Let me assure you that in the time that I wasn’t writing thing were actually happening. Not all of them were interesting but still… Anyhow… on to Peru! As you can probably tell from the title of this blog my Spanish (while pretty darn bad) is much much [View Full Entry]

Having breakfast at Restaurante Haiti
One of the places I wanted to go while in Lima was to a "Restaurante Campestre" (Country retsaurant) o "Centro de Esparcimiento" (Amusement center) (RC or CE for short). These places are located as close as 45 minutes from Lima, driving east on Carretera Central (Central Highway). They feature restaurants, pools, river access (some), horse rides, pedal boats, four wheelers, bungalows where to spend the night, etc. Knowing about my plans, Monica, a friend from my HS class, offered that we all go to the Lawyers' club (she and her husband are lawyers and have access to the club/CE). Different or [View Full Entry]

Ben & Cathy on the flight to Lima
So Ben, Cathy, and I set off from Virginia, USA, at around 8pm Friday 08/14/09. The flight was a bit delayed but nothing that interfered with our connection JFK-LIM. The flight from JFK was nice (although long--~7 hrs.). They served two meals, we had the TV/movie/video game/map system available, and plenty of blankets and pillows to try and get some sleep. Ben and Cathy did; me...not much. We flew LAN and arrived ahead of schedule, ~6:10am. Aeropuerto Jorge Chavez is looking very nice and the immigration and customs process was quick and smooth. The taxi service (pre-arranged) had its rep wai [View Full Entry]

Some people eating our picnics
Hello! Orientation in Lima lasts until classes being (August 17th), so I have been able to count on having pre-planned activities everyday. I have done some really fun things! Some of us had a picnic on these beautiful green cliffs overlooking the ocean one day for lunch. After we walked down the trail to the beach, which was rocky-not like in South Carolina! It was still beautiful though. We also visited these pre-Incan ruins called Huaca Pucllana. They are completely earthquake resistant. Our guide thoroughly described the human sacrifices of women, which was interesting, but made me lose my [View Full Entry]
