We are up at 1am to catch our flight to Lima and join our next tour. The hotel concierge has been helpful with online checkin and all goes smoothly. As we stan in line to board a ground crew member comes by calling my name. Excellent, an upgrade to business class. Ah no, I have been randomly selected for a baggage check. As we scurry to the depths of the airport I realise that my bag contains half of Linda’s stuff. We had consolidated to one bag (her’s) to go to Glalapagos and had not repacked. What had she left in mine?? Well, a power bank as it turned out, which I popped into my backpack but they had a good fossick through anyway and then sent me back! I suspect Linda was more stressed than ... read more

Huaca Pucclana or Pucclana Pyramid lies right in the heart of central Lima, in the Miraflores District. It is a magnificent archeological piece that was made of clay on seven staged platforms. To that end, it is not exactly a typical pyramid that we usually visualize. It was built in 4thcentury A.D. and was considered a ‘sacred village’ by the Incas. The structure is surrounded by a wall to define the outer limit whereas the central part is divided in segments and a large segment of the pyramid was used as the administrative section by the Incas. We booked a tour earlier and the tour takes about an hour to cover various sections of the Pyramid and the guide explained in detail why it was built and how different sections were used. Quite fascinating that the ... read more

The flight landed on time. Immigration formality was over relatively quickly, …no, it was nowhere close to the chaos we saw in Mexico City. By the time we picked up our luggage and came out of the terminal it was close to 10 pm. And the Wyndham hotel was just across the street. Actually, one does not need to come out of the main terminal at all; there is a walkway from the departure level straight to the hotel. We didn’t know that. Anyway, it was not a problem taking a five minute walk down the front road to reach the main lobby. And boy oh boy; it was a fish market. There were ten to fifteen guests who just arrived and were jostling to get close to the hotel reception; and the staffs were just ... read more

Here we are, I'm flying on my own to the North, with a first stop of 48 hours in Lima. Let's put it simply, since my first visit back in 2002, I must have come between 15 and 20 times in Lima. I'm not a local, but it's not that far. My friend has been living there for something looking like forever. He went from single, to married, and today they have two children. None of us are getting any younger! Most tourists will stay 24 hours or even less in Lima while visiting Peru. The city is indeed not the best looking and can be also dangerous if you have no idea where you are heading. But Lima has something special, it is for me one of the world capital for food. This from top ... read more

It was April 2017 and time to get off Curaçao again! This time I went with Jurick, one of my best friends who I grew up with in my neighbourhood. In January I saw this particular travel agency having a special price on tickets to Perú, only valid for that one day and you had to go personally to book and pay immediately. We couldn't let this chance go, so I went immediately there after work. Even though I had to wait long, I didn't care. While waiting for my turn at the travel agency, I took advantage to do some correction work for school. And then the flights were booked and paid for! It was the first time I travelled with Jurick. I arranged everything (hostels, flights, itinerary etc) and he just had to give ... read more

Lima (3/6/2018 - 5/6/2018) From beautiful snow-capped mountains to the busy city *sniff*. Not really a city girl myself, my time here was short and sweet. Lima is the capital and the largest city of Peru; and lies on the country's arid Pacific coast. My favourite activity here was a visit to MATE (pronounced mAH-teh): the Mario Testino photography museum. It was also free because it was a Sunday, jackpot! Peruvian born but living in the England for many years, Mario Testino has been a fashion photographer for the past 20 years. MATE was founded in 2012 and is located in the hipster area of Lima, Barranco. As well as celebrity photography, Mario seeks to portray his Peruvian culture through his gorgeous, bright and glossy photography. One exhibition featured large images of Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, ... read more

The air is thin and breathing is difficult. For the adults. The children, six-year-old Ty and ten-month-old Nathan, seem unaffected. Our research suggested altitude sickness can start once you ascend quickly to heights greater than 8000 feet (2500 meters) above sea level. Our plane had just deposited us at 11,152 feet (3,399 meters). To add insult to injury, it was a steep walk from the tarmac to baggage collection. With laboured breaths, we drag ourselves into the baggage collection area wondering what folly we had gotten ourselves into this time. CUZCO. Peru. High up on the Peruvian side of the Andes Mountains, it once served as the esteemed capital of the great Inca Empire, before the marauding Spaniards, pursuing gold and spreading Christianity, drove the inhabitants into extinction. But let’s backtrack. Two days prior, we had ... read more

Once again the cock crowed at 4:30 Am for our 5:30 departure. Today we bid farewell to Puno and prepare to return to Lima. Our flight departed out of the infamous Juliaca Airport. The airport, like all of the rest of the city was a disaster just like the rest of the city. The 1940's era airport had exactly 2 gates for all of the 4 flights a day in and out. The airport is basically devoted to contraband flights so the passenger flights are actually in the way of the real money makers, counterfeit commerce. The airport was last updated a decade ago. I looked out the window at the runway and I swear I could see potholes dotting the tarmac. Unlike in the US, here in Peru you can fly with liquids, so we ... read more

An unexpected change in our travel trajectory brought us out (of the airport) to explore Lima. Our 9 AM flight out of Cusco, on Avianca Airlines, was delayed as the printer had failed! Boarding passes could not be printed and the poor, understaffed airline crew had to hand write every single passenger's boarding pass information. Online check-in facility was not available either. To add to our woes, passengers of an earlier outbound flight were still being attended to. It was a foregone conclusion that we would miss our next connecting flight out of Lima Eventually, our 9 AM scheduled Avianca flight took off, after 11:30 AM. Since we were early in line, we boarded the aircraft and waited for the rest of the passengers to come aboard. But what I found bizarre was the pilot’s announcement ... read more

Travel for work or vacation often has it's share of challenges, flying to Peru had its share of both. We departed Toledo right on time at 8:AM for the 54 mile drive to Detroit airport. Traffic was light an the weather beautiful. I had a conference call on my work assignment and things got a little emotional. Nothing bad, my team is just so passionate about what we do that emotions came through. So the drive time flew by quickly and we arrived at 9:00 AM to the car park. A quick bus ride and we were at the check in counter to drop off luggage. No one in line we headed right to the counter and hit our first snag. We were flying Delta to Miami and Avianca to Lima. We each had one checked ... read more
