Brazil Travel Blogs

Background: Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822. By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

Week Six... South America » Brazil » Bahia » Lençóis
Hello all! Sorry for the silence over past weeks, I´ve been very busy here but I´m alive, well and happy! I celebrated my 21st birthday on the 2nd October and my friends here threw me a surprise party on the banks of the river, with cake, candles, balloons and a few caipirinhas too! I´d had a lovely day with the kids, Friday is games day so we played a big game of twister and it was all nice and relaxed. Two of my friends also took me out for dinner so I have been really spoilt lately! Work as been tough [View Full Entry]

Hi During the past year I visited my home town, Maceio, a couple of times, but didn blog. So, here is a short one, followed by pictures of family, friends and places. I will start with a comment about something I experience whenever I arrive at the first Brazilian airport. I can not fail to notice the cultural difference. At first, it feels somewhat caotic and disorganized, but thats expected by now. It is the noise that still gets to me. Boy we are LOUD here! And now with cell phones in everyones hands, its worse. One have no choice but [View Full Entry]

Last night we got off a plane in Iguaçu Falls in Brazil after 33 hours of traveling from Delhi. We are in a town called Foz do Iguaçu in the Brazilian state of Paraná, and tomorrow we will be on the Argentine side of the falls in a town called Puerto Iguazú. After checking in at our hotel, we walked three blocks where we found a strip of restaurants. They were all watching the soccer match between Brazil and Bolivia on large screen TVs. It is a very small town servicing tourists viewing the falls. Everyone was sitting outside cafe style [View Full Entry]

Rio is crazy good and crazy bad! Its pissed down for three days and the city stinks! Two little punks with bare feet and a fake knife mugged us on the way back to our hostel! It was all bit of a joke as I had no idea what the hell was going on and Richard gave them 3 Rias, about 3 pounds and half a pack ciggies and then we legged it! I think they were more scared than us as the police patrol that area all the time. Anyway we were in stiches by the time we got back [View Full Entry]

When I said before that we had found a good position on the boat to Santerem I was actually incorrect. We arrived to the ship around 2 hours before it was due to leave port. We were greeted by the sight of around 250 hammocks with ours smack bang in the middle. I had read in the book that they get very busy but I didn´t realise they would have a hammock in every concievable spot so that there is no room to walk around. Anne had a women who didn´t look well and was about 90 years old. Basically you [View Full Entry]

Alter do Chao South America » Brazil » Pará » Santarém
