Background: Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822. By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

Finally arrived in Rios bus station after my mammoth journey from Argentina. The journey just flew by though, the seats were more like beds and fully reclined so I good a full nights sleep. I even watched Appaloosa again, not that I had much choice as it was piped over the speaker system. I don know what it is about that film but every time I travel its on, so know I have watched this film on the flight to India, the flight to Sao Paulo and the bus to Rio!!. When I got off the bus I met up with [View Full Entry]

The next day I wandered off to do the touristy bits, the bus service is really good round Rio and every journey cost 2.30 reais - about 90p. My first stop was sugarloaf mountain, when I was going up in the cable car I couldn’t help but think of the scene in Moonraker where Bond is tackling jaws:-) The weather wasn’t particularly good so the views weren’t brilliant. Without doubt I think that Rio has the most beautiful location of any big city but whether it is the most beautiful city in the world (as some commentators say) I would just [View Full Entry]

There is an easy way to get from Rio to Isla Grande, (direct hostel to hostel transfer) I realised too late, but as always I had to make it more difficult for myself and my new chum Ellen. So after a bus to the bus station and then another bus to Angra dos Reas, then another local bus to the port (where I stepped on it and it then drove off without Ellen)!! and then a walk to the boat and then a 90 min boat journey to Isla Grande ending with a 15 min walk to the hostel!! I find [View Full Entry]

I sit and write this with a hangover. And not any hangover, i drank enough cheap Argentinian vodka last night to fuel a whole bloody nuclear war and the fumes seeping out of my skin right now, a good 12 hours after the night ended (yes, it was a 4am finish, nice) could fuel a small car, so excuse the spelling mistakes. I think last time i wrote we were on Ilha do Mel. Not much to say about that one...no one was there, it rained, none of the restaurants were open, showers were cold and we only had enough money [View Full Entry]

Week Six... South America » Brazil » Bahia » Lençóis
Hello all! Sorry for the silence over past weeks, I´ve been very busy here but I´m alive, well and happy! I celebrated my 21st birthday on the 2nd October and my friends here threw me a surprise party on the banks of the river, with cake, candles, balloons and a few caipirinhas too! I´d had a lovely day with the kids, Friday is games day so we played a big game of twister and it was all nice and relaxed. Two of my friends also took me out for dinner so I have been really spoilt lately! Work as been tough [View Full Entry]

So our boat to Manaus was a completely different experience to the first time around but again we had to sleep three nights on the boat. Although the first night we were docked and had the boat to ourselves. The captain agreed that we could sleep overnight which saved us finding accomodation for the night. When we woke up after our first night we thought the boat would be crammed with hammocks like previously but to our astonishment only 40 or 50 hammocks went up which left us with plenty of room to swing our hammocks to our hearts content ;) [View Full Entry]
