Background: Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822. By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

I am now in a very unsunny Brazil, so instead of hitting Ipanema beach I thought I would finally update the blog. Bus Catching Ability My bus catching ability is actaully getting worse, but slightly more eventful. I was meant to catch an overnight bus from the Brazilian side of Igazcu Falls to Campo Grande. Unfortunately though numb nuts here turned up at the Argentinian bus terminal. My face dropped quicker that the waterfalls when I realised I had missed another bus. But a really helpful guy at the terminal arranged for a taxi to take me across the border and [View Full Entry]

To be honest, I missed the afternoon part of it because I was on a family outing until 4:30p. And I was so tired after that I took a nap for one hour. Most of my friends went to check it out around 2p. By the time I got up, everyone I knew went...and some people warned that it's not too good to go by myself, since men are such creepers here, and I don't want them bothering me, nor do I want my camera stolen. So I stayed by my window to take some shots. I was wistfully looking out [View Full Entry]

So I swapped to the beach, and now I have a computer to type on, rather than using my phone and wifi.. The Lonely planet described the mini rooms at the Hotel Toledo as coffins... not quite that bad, and only slightly smaller than my digs at uni so I´m used to it. Weeny en suite, tho! Yesterday started with heavy rain, but it had just about finished by 8am so jumped in the taxi to Copacabana. A quick wander to the beach with a backpack (a no-no) and back to the hotel. I´m starting to notice more things about the [View Full Entry]

Well my plans for the race have been scuppered. Basically the organisers where unable to process my application within the 13 days they were given and they have informed me that they have been unable to enter me in the race. Next time i may have to try applying a year in advance just to give them enough time to click a button on a computer. Will be intrested to see how they cope with the olympics. To be honest this weeks training as consisted of too much caprinhas and dancing to the early morning in rios clubs. My samba is [View Full Entry]

We have been in the Brazilian Jungle about 3 hours from Manaus for the last three days. It took two boat rides and two vehicle rides to get here. There is no cell signal or Internet. The only electricity is by generator. We found a guy named Vincente Thomas through Lonely Planet (he was listed under Manaus jungle trekking) and he met us at the airport in Manaus. He delivered us to a floating lodge in the Amazon Jungle. It is low tide season so the Amazon is full of fish and dolphins. They are easy to spot. We went sunset [View Full Entry]

I am typing this blog with two hands. I typed the last blog with one. Not because I thought it would be funny, or because I lost a bet, or because I like to time myself doing strange tasks but because I had an accident. Actually I've been having quite a few accidents recently. But i´ll get on to that in a bit. On 24th September we flew from Cartagena to Leticia, a teeny weeny town in the far south of Colombia on the boarder with Peru and Brazil. I cant tell you much about Leticia because when we arrived we [View Full Entry]

Made it! The trip so far has done wonders for the carbon footprint - jfk and sao paulo before we landed at a damp rio. First view from the aeroplane was of shark's tooth mountains and a church perched on a big hill, and then I noticed the houses, scattered on the hills as if someone had fired a gun full of lego bricks at them. Then there was the traffic.. Am in the business district, and there are a few skyscrapers going up, but most everything else is portuguese colonial. You can't tell what shop is coming next, though - [View Full Entry]

So it´s 7:30am, Friday 2nd October (Day 26) and we´re at the bus station at Paraty waiting for a bus to take us back to Sao Paulo. The bus departs at 8:30am and we arrive in Sao Paulo for 3pm. Once there we were hoping to able to jump straight on the bus to the Iguazu Falls but unfortunately the next one wasn´t until 6:30pm. During the wait we tried a Bob´s Burger which is basically like a McDonalds, however it was the most disgusting burger we´d ever eaten and also one of the most expensive! The bus journey was 16 [View Full Entry]

G´day!
