Brazil Travel Blogs

Background: Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822. By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

Week Seven... South America » Brazil » Bahia » Lençóis
Hi all! Another exciting week here in Lençois. The kids decided to behave themselves a little better, you´ll be glad to here. We have a new volunteer, who is now living with me in the project house. He is a 28 year old from Recife in the north of Brazil. He is really nice, but for now I reserve my judgement as to how well the housing situation will work. At least he is a clean freak, so I don´t have to housetrain him! Things continue to go well for me here, and my Portuguese is coming on in leaps and [View Full Entry]

29th September - Day 23 The bus from Angra to Paraty took 1 1/2 hours but this time we were on more of a local bus. There was no where to put our rucksacks and the seats were really not comfortable. As soon as we got to Paraty we were bombarded with different people trying to peddle their hostels. We looked at 1 place which claimed it had a pool but it was basically a paddling pool, full of dirt in their backgarden. We settled on this place called Family Hostel where we had a private room ensuite, double bed, fridge, [View Full Entry]

So we were a little worried before we got there .We didn't have any problems we really enjoyed every moment that we were there. Copacabana Was very beautiful we walked up and down copacabana every day.We walked to Leme and to Ipanema. Ipanema was our favorite. We really Loved it! We cant wait to go back. Finally arrived in Rios bus station after my mammoth journey from Argentina. The journey just flew by though, the seats were more like beds and fully reclined so I good a full nights sleep. I even watched Appaloosa again, not that I had much choice as it was piped over the speaker system. I don know what it is about that film but every time I travel its on, so know I have watched this film on the flight to India, the flight to Sao Paulo and the bus to Rio!!. When I got off the bus I met up with [View Full Entry]

The next day I wandered off to do the touristy bits, the bus service is really good round Rio and every journey cost 2.30 reais - about 90p. My first stop was sugarloaf mountain, when I was going up in the cable car I couldn’t help but think of the scene in Moonraker where Bond is tackling jaws:-) The weather wasn’t particularly good so the views weren’t brilliant. Without doubt I think that Rio has the most beautiful location of any big city but whether it is the most beautiful city in the world (as some commentators say) I would just [View Full Entry]

There is an easy way to get from Rio to Isla Grande, (direct hostel to hostel transfer) I realised too late, but as always I had to make it more difficult for myself and my new chum Ellen. So after a bus to the bus station and then another bus to Angra dos Reas, then another local bus to the port (where I stepped on it and it then drove off without Ellen)!! and then a walk to the boat and then a 90 min boat journey to Isla Grande ending with a 15 min walk to the hostel!! I find [View Full Entry]
