South America » Brazil February 12th 2023

Thursday 9th Feb - Sunday 12th Feb 2023 After a slightly stressful time getting to Paraty (we Ubered to the wrong place and then got stuck in very bad traffic trying to get to the right place, missing our booked bus by 5minutes, so had to wait a couple hours for the next one!) we eventually made it to this old coastal colonial town. With far less people, and the whole historic centre not allowing cars, there was instantly a chilled vibe, and, dumping our bags into a surprisingly nice Airbnb apartment, we excitedly headed out for a wonder. A maze of sandy cobbled streets, lined with pretty white buildings with variously coloured wooden windows and roofs, dotted with quirky shops, cafes, restaurants, horse and carts and quiet squares, led us to a calm river and ... read more

Friday 3rd Feb - Thursday 9th Feb 2023 With amazingly timed flights, we were sat a mere 10minutes at the arrivals side of Rio’s big airport before our friend, Charlotte, caught us up. All a little tired and sweaty but happy and excited, the time instantly flew by, as we chatted away whilst catching an Uber, finding our AirBnB apartment, working out we should not touch the shower head if we don’t want a shock, and enjoying a cup of tea. All this talking and planning for her to meet us at the end of our travels and here we all were together, in the huge city of Rio, Brazil. Amazing stuff. With 6 nights here we wanted to do as much as we could but at an enjoyable pace, which meant not leaving too early ... read more

Arrived in Rio after an overnight flight courtesy of Delta. Obtained a few winks, but the comfort level of Delta, which I consider the best U.S. airline, did not compare to the Virgin Atlantic flight we took last summer, at least not on their Boeing 767. Nonetheless, we spent much of the day with Marcio, our tour guide, being ferried about the city. And this is a very large town with some thirteen million calling it home. Not infrequently, we find the traffic in Atlanta atrocious. Well, it cannot hold a candle to this place. Driving is a hazardous sport. Motorbikes move about the lanes much as they do in Italy, except more cavalierly, producing curses from Marcio. He labels these folks "organ donors" as an average of two are killed in the city each day. ... read more

Most of you folks are aware Sheila suffered a stroke at the Falcon's game on 20 November. Yes, this has not been a pleasant experience, but this stout Bird continues to make progress through her hard work. She now walks with the aid of Bella (her name for the purple cane) in secure places or with a rollator (and, of course, Bird demands we supply the rollators name, which is Rosie) in locations with many people. About a year ago we made plans for a trip down south. After the stroke we anticipated cancellation would be required. However, every neurologist (four of them) indicate she is perfectly capable of taking the trip and, in fact, should go. Yes, of course, we are making significant modifications. We will not independently access the various sights. Rather, we are ... read more

So we thought we’d mix it up today and see some waterfalls. Not content with what Argentina had to offer from a slushy perspective, we ventured into Brazil (strangely without any contact with immigration however). Given yesterday’s heat and the pleasure it brought for all, we decided on the boat ride for today. A trip through the jungle on an electric train to learn about some of the plants, followed by a hot walk through more jungle before we arrived at the boat landing. The number of people changing into their swimmers and leaving their shoes behind could maybe have provided some indication of what was to come, but the girls placed all their confidence in the two-dollar shop ponchos to protect them from the raging waters of Iguassu Falls. It was misguided. Apparently cheap plastic ... read more

Prima o poi doveva accadere. Tutto è accaduto a San Paolo... Bene, tutti ... read more

This blog and lots more photos are available on my website https://heatherjasper.com/brazil/salvador-beaches Salvador has beaches for everybody. There are sandy beaches and pebbly beaches. There are beaches for surfing and beaches with benches of rock just offshore that break the waves and leave the beaches calm. My favorites were the beaches with giant tide pools that people use as heated swimming pools. The black rock absorbs the sun and leaves the pools even warmer than the already warm ocean. Praia Farol da Barra One of the most popular beaches in Salvador, Praia Farol da Barra has soft sand and low waves. The big rollers from the Atlantic are broken by benches of rock that serve as a reef and protect the beach. Praia da Gamboa The heart of Salvador is built right to the water’s edge. ... read more

This blog and more photos are available on my website https://heatherjasper.com/brazil/salvador This coastal city of almost 3 million people is full of beaches, history, music, and delicious food. I loved everything about it: the food, the music, the beaches, and even the museums. Salvador is a giant sprawl of different neighborhoods, each with its own name and feel. Most neighborhoods are either very rich or very poor, with a few falling somewhere in the middle. Still, most of the city is economically and racially divided. I stayed in Barra, within walking distance of the beach. It’s a residential part of town with a few good restaurants. North up the coast from Barra is Rio Vermelho, which has tons of great restaurants, bars, and nightlife. The most touristy part of town is Pelourinho, which you can read ... read more

This blog and more photos are available on my website https://heatherjasper.com/brazil/salvador-pelourinho Pelourinho means “whipping post” in remembrance of the cruelty of slavery, which built the city. It has been a rich city for hundreds of years precisely because of the slaves used to work the sugar cane fields and build the city. It’s a violent and tragic history, but one that city residents don’t want forgotten. Despite the heavy history, the neighborhood today is full of joyful music, fabulous restaurants, and engaging museums. It also boasts the best spots to watch the sunset in Salvador. For cultural events, don’t miss the Balé Folclorico da Bahia. There are regular performances three evenings a week and a few times a year are larger performances. Check their website for scheduled performances. Salvador is ... read more

This blog and more photos are available on my website. https://heatherjasper.com/brazil/lencois Lençóis is one of the most adorable little towns I’ve ever seen. It’s very much a tourist town, where streets are empty during the day when most visitors are out on tours of the waterfalls and caves. There are dozens of quaint restaurants and even more boutique hotels and quaint bed & breakfasts. It has a half dozen corner shops but no real grocery stores. Souvenir shops tend towards handmade crafts and art. Lençóis is also the best town from which to base your explorations of Chapada Diamantina. There are over a dozen local tour agencies in Lençóis, as well as an association of guides which offers much lower prices than the tour agencies. I did all my tours with ZenTur, a fantastic ... read more
