Background: Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822. By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

Made it! The trip so far has done wonders for the carbon footprint - jfk and sao paulo before we landed at a damp rio. First view from the aeroplane was of shark's tooth mountains and a church perched on a big hill, and then I noticed the houses, scattered on the hills as if someone had fired a gun full of lego bricks at them. Then there was the traffic.. Am in the business district, and there are a few skyscrapers going up, but most everything else is portuguese colonial. You can't tell what shop is coming next, though - [View Full Entry]

So it´s 7:30am, Friday 2nd October (Day 26) and we´re at the bus station at Paraty waiting for a bus to take us back to Sao Paulo. The bus departs at 8:30am and we arrive in Sao Paulo for 3pm. Once there we were hoping to able to jump straight on the bus to the Iguazu Falls but unfortunately the next one wasn´t until 6:30pm. During the wait we tried a Bob´s Burger which is basically like a McDonalds, however it was the most disgusting burger we´d ever eaten and also one of the most expensive! The bus journey was 16 [View Full Entry]

G´day!

Hello there! I had the opportunity to go to Rio a couple of months ago and had a blast! Despite all of the fear that so many people tried to instill into my brain, as there is a lot of crime in the city, I had nothing short of an incredible and beautiful experience. I met my friend down there, and we traveled together, but I also did a little bit of traveling and exploring by myself.... I started to publish my videos from my trip, which you may visit at www.wanderingstarsguide.blogspot.com . In the meantime, I'm happy to answer any [View Full Entry]

Rio, Rio, Rio. What a place, after another 27 hour slog on a bus, we missed Flamengo Vs Sao Paulo. Took us three hours to get through bloody border police due to some idiots who weren´t allowed in so had to sit, for three hours slowly realising that the game was slowly drifting away. Worse still was speaking to all the guy in the bar when they got back telling us just how great it was! Moan aside it was a thew best place so far. We met up with Julio´s daughter Luine and her boyfriend diego for a local night [View Full Entry]

I spent a weekend on an island, it was very nice. Morro de Sao Paulo was where all the foreigners used to go and have fun and relax... anyway, that place was packed with foreigners and brazilians not native to Salvador. Totally a tourist town with family owned restaurants and inns. One of the things that bothered me was the sand wasn't clean... I just expected places that tourists go to get their beaches cleaned better. There were some kids picking up trash, but...I especially didnt want to walk too far from the surf barefooted with all the junk on the [View Full Entry]

Week Seven... South America » Brazil » Bahia » Lençóis
Hi all! Another exciting week here in Lençois. The kids decided to behave themselves a little better, you´ll be glad to here. We have a new volunteer, who is now living with me in the project house. He is a 28 year old from Recife in the north of Brazil. He is really nice, but for now I reserve my judgement as to how well the housing situation will work. At least he is a clean freak, so I don´t have to housetrain him! Things continue to go well for me here, and my Portuguese is coming on in leaps and [View Full Entry]

The cobbled streets of Paraty
29th September - Day 23 The bus from Angra to Paraty took 1 1/2 hours but this time we were on more of a local bus. There was no where to put our rucksacks and the seats were really not comfortable. As soon as we got to Paraty we were bombarded with different people trying to peddle their hostels. We looked at 1 place which claimed it had a pool but it was basically a paddling pool, full of dirt in their backgarden. We settled on this place called Family Hostel where we had a private room ensuite, double bed, fridge, [View Full Entry]
