Guess my body was really tired I only woke up around 10am but just waited lying on the mat till like 1130am. Decided to walk about the Shin Sekai area and explore things around where I was staying. There are many restaurants with this “Billiken” statue, and at the bottom is a phrase says “God Of Seeing Things As They Ought To Be”. Having done a bit of research on the internet, Wikipedia states that it is a charm doll created by an American art teacher who saw this figure in a dream. It is for good luck and represents a “no worry” ideal. This figure got to Japan in 1912 and is still there a sign on how much Japanese stick on to old trends and fashions while continuously embracing new ones. Afterwards I decided ... read more

Asia » Japan » Osaka » Osaka May 21st 2012

Having spent the entire night at the Low Cost Carrier Terminal in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia I was dead tired when I reached the Kansai International Airport, Japan at 345pm. I have had no sleep at all the previous night and slept only bits and bobs on the plane. First job of the day was getting a Japanese SIM card. At the airport there are two counters at the arrival, one place renting phones outright and the other renting SIM cards. Renting SIM cards which for me seems a little unusual; renting a whole phone costs like Yen 500 per day plus call / text and data charges. The other place called Softbank charges about Yen 150 per day and but they only provide you with a SIM card. The two ladies at the Softbank counter were ... read more

Asia » Sri Lanka » Central Province » Ella April 13th 2012

In spite of going to bed at 4am in the morning after finishing and uploading blogs and pictures, I was up by 540am. The birds were chattering and in general there was a bit of noise. I am so obsessed with the views from the Ella gap I quickly ran out at 6am to take pictures from the restaurant areas. Afterwards some dude came and knocked on my door and said “Brother would you mind moving your vehicle, as I need to drop some people in the Ella railway station and their train is at 630am”. What can I say..... Sky Green Hotel parking is a little awkward. There are 4 parking slots and it’s two in the front and two at the back. So when the guy in the front needs to move the guy ... read more

Asia » Sri Lanka » Central Province » Ella April 12th 2012

Woke up at 615am and opened my window and saw the most amazing views I have seen in Sri Lanka...Unfortunately due to the mist didn’t see Kiri Vehera however Uda Walawe Reservoir was visible. Took about 100 pictures and still couldn’t capture the beauty...finally around 730am I had to get my eyes off the vistas and did some yoga for about 30 minutes. Before leaving I took some pictures of the hotel that we stayed “Hotel Nature Horizon” and we drove to Bambarakanda falls. Since it was late when we passed the turn off to Bambarakanda falls yesterday we had to drive back. Between the 172km and 171km posts you get a turn off to Bambarakanda falls and you have to drive 5kms to get to the fall. It’s a fairly well tarred road. On the ... read more

After getting postponed many times, I finally managed to make a start today 11thApril 2012 at 915am. I was on my way to Kitulgala and took the route Kottawa – Homagama – Meepe – Hanwella – Kosgama – Avissawella. However the traffic to get to Avissawella was so bad it was literally not moving at all. Hence decided to scrap the Kitulgala idea for now did a U-turn and headed straight to Ella via Eheliyagoda on the A4. Traffic was due to people doing last minute shopping before the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in Sri Lanka which falls on the 13th and 14th of April each year but this year it’s on the 12th and 13th of April. Traffic getting into Eheliyagoda town was quite bad but not as bad as Avissawella so even at ... read more

Middle East » Israel » Tel Aviv District » Jaffa March 1st 2010

I, woke up around 9am and used the wifi facility to make a few calls on skype....this iphone is such a great invention.... I decided to do the walking tour as in the lonely planet guide book, need to make a start somewhere... While walking down Rothschild blvd I turned into Sheinkin street; came across a roadside cafe that sold houmous and pita bread...I have been soo looking forward to having this...it cost 20 shekels which in my opinion is kind of expensive but hey i cant be in hunger now can I ? Went near the Yemenite quarter and saw Kikar Magen David (Round about where 6 streets meet) and went down HaCarmel Street through the market areas... It felt a bit like walking through Pita Kotuwa (Fort Area) in Sri Lanka. Thereafter after going ... read more

Middle East » Israel » Tel Aviv District » Tel Aviv February 28th 2010

Got to Luton around 920am and Nathan had organised through the easyjet ticket desk which is run by Menzies a speedyboarding for me which came in quite handy... I bought 3 doughnuts from KrispyCreme and the guy said for another £1.45 I can get 3 more so guess what heheh. The flight was uneventful howevr during the decent to Tel Aviv there was a ligtning bolt which was a little scary but the cabin crew said don't worry it happens all the time. The Ben Gurion airport walk to the immigration area is very grand with a very tall ceiling and it looks really nice... I was expecting some excitement at the immigration as always but they asked me why I was visitng, for how long I was staying, my fathers name and my grand fathers ... read more

Africa » Tunisia » Tataouine November 30th 2008

I kept waking up like every 2-3 hours and finally couldn’t sleep after 6am, was just lying and waiting because everyone else was still asleep. Everyone woke up around 730am and no one here takes a shower. Everyone just washed their face and hair and that’s it. The dinner table was brought outside and the sun was just popping out and it was cold. I really enjoyed sitting outside with the sun rays warming me up. They heated the coffee and brought bread and a bowl of olive oil and everyone kept dipping the bread to the olive oil and that was breakfast. The people here don’t brush their teeth either. I was planning on leaving after going to Chenini and Douiret so decided to take my backpack. Before catching a camionnette to Chenini I left ... read more

Africa » Tunisia » Tataouine November 29th 2008

I woke up early morning at 6am and went to the hill nearby to see if there would be a good sun rise but nope pretty disappointing. Got back to the hotel to have breakfast as it’s included in the price and was given bread, butter, jam and coffee. Sometime I just wished they just don’t bother but then again you got to learn to appreciate whatever that’s given to you. The couple I met yesterday also came to have breakfast just when I was going to finish. They had spoken with a taxi driver the previous day and negotiated to go and see 3 places for 20 dinars each. They asked me if I wanted to join. I said sounds like a plan. They said the taxi guy was busy in the morning and he ... read more
