Godt nyttår godtfolk! Feliz ano novo!

We arrived into Rio at 6am Brazil time, but still 3am Peruvain time. We had no idea what the exchange rate was, or how much 'reais' were worth, but armed with out printed map sent from our hostel, we knew a taxi was going to cost around 60-100 reais. We paid 90 and hopped into our taxi, esctatic to be going back to the beach. The weather was overcast which was a bit disappointing. We knew it was rainy season but we had seen photos from previous years and it had looked alright. The ride took about 20 minutes and we drove on a highway that separated two favelas which are shanty towns where people live illegally. This road is famous because apparently there are shoot outs across the road between the two favelas, but it ... read more

Bon Dia, Our flight left late but we arrived in Rio de Janeiro without any issues and were met by our transfer who waited through our delay to meet us. On the ride through town, we saw some interesting things. On the main overpass from the airport we saw a few cars pulled over to the side. We thought they had been in an accident but it turns out that they had simply stopped to go fishing. From the side of the busy overpass in from the airport. In rush hour. The road started to back up more after that so we took a circuitous route that took us past one of the univeristies in town and its engineering building, which ironically was a pile of rubble. Somebody must have failed their final. We continued through ... read more

Day 8 - Dec 28 - Rio De Janerio - Copacabana - Final Day: Today is our final day in Rio. Our day started with our usual breakfast then we walked along the beach to visit nearby Fort Copacabana. This Fort is between Copacabana and Impanema beach. We have tried to go there a few times but each time it was closed. After the Fort, we walked to Impanema beach for the last time and headed back to the hotel to clean up and pack our bags. We then picked up something to eat by the hotel and headed to the airport around 2 pm. Our flight left Rio at 6:48 pm and arrived in Buenos Aires around 10:00 or so. We got a cab to the Duque Boutique Hotel and Spa and got our room. ... read more

Day 4 - Dec 24 - Rio De Janerio: We woke up to a sunny day at the beach today. Had our usual breakfast at our hotel and decided our day's agenda. We can see the Christ the Redeemer statue from our room. It looked like it was very cloudy on the top of the mountain so we decided that we should go to Sugar Loaf today. After confirming it was open, we hopped in a taxi and got over there around 10 minutes to 11:00. Since it was Christmas Eve, they closed early - at 11:00! We were bummed out about it so we made a quick decision to try the Christ the Redeemer (One of the new Seven Wonder of the world) - despite the clounds. When we got there, you couldn't even see ... read more

Day 1 & Day 2 - Dec 21 to Dec 22: It has been a long journey to our first destination - Rio De Janerio, Brazil. It probably took us a Day and half to get to Rio. We flew from LAX to San Jose, Costa Rica (had 6 hours layover so we took a taxi to Downtown Central Market of San Jose). Not much to see there. Went back to the airport to catch a flight from San Jose to Lima, Peru, then Buenos Aires and final destination Rio. Got to Rio around 4 pm local time. Checked in to our hotel at Copacabana and then went to explore the beach area around our hotel. Rio is very nice place. It's remind me of Hawaii. It's very tropical here. It rained last night but that ... read more

We made it!!! Feel like we have done so much already so prepare yourself for a long old read!! After an extremely long flight (only slightly delayed by snow) we landed in Rio de Janeiro!! Making our way to a taxi, we were asked by another English girl if she could catch a lift with us. She lives in Rio and is here doing some research for her PhD. Turns out she lived in the red light district of Rio (Gloria) and when the taxi driver stopped in some back alley and they both got out, we both thought that we may have been had and something dodgy was going down!! Luckily this was just us being paranoid and we were not about to be robbed at gunpoint!! Our taxi ride continued to the South Zone ... read more

Hey everybody, im sorry its taken me so long to do this, but i needed some time and cheap internet to sort it all out and bingo i found it in Paraty. So i have three different locations to update you with. 1. Rio de Janeiro After an hour delay due to fog in London we took off on our tour around the world. Flight was really comfortable, and we managed to watch films and have some shut eye. We spent the first day sorting ourselves out. The weather in Brazil is very hot but sometimes cloudy. We have had a few really nice days of sun, so i have a few white bits and burns!! Copacabana was a safe place and we met loads of fun people in our hostel, we spent some time with ... read more

I haven't written here in ages, because I haven't traveled in ages. But two days ago I returned from a brief vacation I managed to pull off, and here's the story: Six hours before my flight was leaving Copenhagen Airport, I realized my passport was in an impossibly difficult location. Sadly, it was sharing this location with my identification, another essential item for any voyage. You see, I was traveling to South America, Brazil to be exact, Rio de Janeiro to be even more precise, and the only thing that almost every travel page had in common was the advice to bring copies of your ID and passport with you everywhere. Meanwhile your actual documents should lay securely in an expensive hotel room or a safe at a hostel. Ordinarily, I think that sort of precautionary ... read more

Beach tans & Caipirinha´s Since landing we´ve spent a couple of chilled days in Santa Tereas. The hostel was a bit hit & miss with the first room, having a bed from the 1960´s and a massive hole above the door. On the friday night the owner informed us about a band that was playing on the terrace. Unfortunately this turned into what can only be described as a Santana all nighter but thankfully we managed to switch rooms and got a slight refund :) It was a good call to have something booked in advance to chill out for the first few days and regroup. Personally I can´t sleep on flights so was destroyed from watching 11 hours of action/comedy/chick flicks/etc. That said we still managed to get out and about. Friday was spent ... read more
