In about a week's time on the 20th Tuesday, I will be ready to start the first leg of the trip by driving to the Herndon-Monroe (Virginia) Park & Ride facility then snare a cab ride to Washington Dulles International Airport. My fellow cohorts - their names and groupie names are as follows: Jas Sunderland, Aussie Bum; Anna Bitencourt, BANNANNA; David Bird, Birdman; and lastly, of course, the silly author of this worthless blog, Allen Sanderson aka Mr. Sassy, Sandman, or Slick (depending on who you ask). Rio de Janeiro is our destination. It is a land full of friendly Cariocas. These people take kindness to the nth degree. We are excited and ready for adventure. For David Bird and I, this will be our first time touching mother Earth below her belt. Stay tuned for ... read more

So haven't had the chance to update the blog for a while. Currently in Rio, Brazil - an interesting experience. First of all BA, Argentina what a great city. The people, the look and the feel of the country was so brilliant. The week their consisted of watching football eating steak, going to markets and seeing the sites of the city. We met a english girl Saskia who spoke abit of spanish so she was like our personal tour guide. I went to the San Telmo markets, watched Argentina play in the main part of the city on the big screen and saw Recoleta cemetery (which was out of this world - Evita is buried there). I still find it funny how much we stand out everywhere we go. One main point about BA, Argentina is ... read more

Spent much of today swimming, and lounging around at Copacabana beach. Decent day but the beaches are getting kinda old, I'm about ready to move on to Sao Paulo. There is more to do here that I won't be getting to, but the type of people who would want to go to museums and street markets just aren't around to do that with. Also despite the city becoming more safe by the day I am still hesitant to venture out alone to any non gringo areas. At night I spent my time drinking up at the bar wanting to head out to Lapa with some people. however when the time came to head to Lapa I got screwed on the cab situation and didn't make it. Disappointing for sure. All in all I am starting to ... read more

Our adventure began on the 12th of April in Dublin airport, catching a connecting flight to Heathrow. It’s difficult to comprehend the size of Heathrow airport until you run the risk of missing your connecting flight. But finally after several buses, three security checks and a rip off of a Bureau de Change, we were off, on our way to Rio de Janeiro! I remember looking at the departures board, thinking how exotic our destination sounded. On board the flight, we had a selection of over 30 movies, TV shows and music, so we were spoilt for choice. This also helped me get Dylan Moran’s joke out of my head; “We are in a huge, metal tin can flying in the sky, we are all going to die, we’re all going to die!” The entertainment succeded ... read more

São Paulo From Buenos Aires we flew to the huge and grubby metropolis of São Paulo. We had already pre-booked a hotel on-line, not knowing how busy the city would be. Upon our arrival we soon realised that it was in fact a 'sex hotel' - where rooms are rented by the hour!! We were in a pretty dodgy area, and there were no other hotels around, so we had no choice but to stay. It was a clean hotel and fortunately we had ear plugs, which were definitely a must! The following day we took the metro to the centre of São Paulo. We were staying in a very un-touristy area, and needless to say, attracted curiosity from the locals. Everyone walked around with attitude, all confident and fairly unapproachable - probably due to how ... read more

The epic journey back to Rio de Janeiro began with an Aerosur flight from Cusco to La Paz with a connection to the major Bolivian city of Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz sits in the steamy, sticky region of Bolivia and is, both climatically and socially, very different to the rest of Bolivia. I was only here for a day but I was very surprised to see just how different the people here are to their highland kinsmen. Santa Cruz lies in an affluent corridor of Bolivia and is where many of its wealthier residents live. The weather is hot and sticky as it sits just 400 metres above sea level in comparison with much of Bolivia that tops out mostly at over 3,500. I spent a night here, plastered by my own sweat against the grubby ... read more

Rio de Janiero Ever since Oli Pipe and I were asked to complete an English project on the Maracana football stadium and the city of Rio de Janiero, I have been fasinated by this city. One of my favourite films of all time was 'The City of God', which was based here. The first thing that springs to most people´s minds when you mention Rio de Janiero is crime. This is understandable as there is such a divide between the rich and the poor in this city, like Cheltenham but on a much more dramatic scale with favelas and mansions. Getting there The flight was long but the excitement saw me through it. I met two lovely genuine locals on the plane, one that had been in Auckland at the same time as me, they helped ... read more

After sleeping with every parts of our body crossed, hoping for fine weather today. We were both bitterly dissappointed to wake up to more rain and another day when we would not see a brake in the clouds. In protest of this English like weather we slept for another couple of hours, as quite frankly there wasnt too much to hurry up getting out of bed for. We did however make it out of bed and up for breakfast where we were pleasantly surprised with the standard of food. We were served really nice orange juice and the best fresh bread we have had so far. So much so we both had three rolls of it. Our plan today involved seeing the botanical gardens which was on the opposite side of the lake to Copacabana. If ... read more

Today we had to check out of our lovely Copacabana hotel and we were due to stay at the Mellow Yellow hostel which was only four blocks away. We enjoyed the breakfast at the hotel then after a quick pack in which we just about managed to cram our stuff in - i swear we are just accumilating, my bag seems to be getting heavier even though i am not really buying much, how does that work? Today was sad waking up as the glorious weather that we have experienced has gone, in its place there is rain. It looks as if it is here to stay as there was no break in the clouds at all. So we put on our rain coats and walked the four blocks to the Mellow Yellow. It was hard ... read more
