We arrived in Rio and checked into the Apa Hotel which was 2 streets back from the beach. We caught a bus from the airport which took about 1 ½ hours to get to Copacabana Beach. This was recommended to us. Once on the bus we wondered how we would know when to get off!! Tom was befriended by a guy from the USA who was keen to talk, guide and help. He does business frequently in Rio and we learn later that his girlfriend is Brazilian as we ran into them again during our stay in Rio. He told us where to get off and I knew the street to look for so all worked well. He also suggested that we take a bus trip to see the main features of the city, since ... read more

Hi All, So we are home safe and sound - no issues on the way back. Here are a few final pictures from Rio and one or two reflections. Best Meal - El Establo in BA - the best steaks we've ever had - thanks Shirley! Best Hotel - Novotel in BA - first class and great Value. Sauna was great too. Best Experience - First sight of Iguazu Falls - jaw droppingly impressive Best Shopping - BA definitely - bought loads - decent prices helped - we really like BA. Best laugh - Watching two crew, five passengers and several passers-by trying to move a car (by lifting it!) out of the way of a Tram in Santa Teresa, Rio. The whole tram load of passengers cheered and clapped when after 10 minutes of struggling ... read more

Hi all, Don´t believe that Rio and other exotic places are always sunny! It´s poured buckets today - yet still been warm. Yesterday we had a great time wandering around the street markets in the central district - Steve bought yet more cheap reading glasses (so that whenever he loses a pair, there are still more to hand). I bought a rather flouncy gypsy-style dress - most unlike me, but I guess Rio is bringing out the flamboyant side! And then last night we had the best ever charroscaria - Brazilian BBQ, with meat served on skewers at a pretty fast rate. Absolutely delicious. But we made a mistake: we decided to try a caiphirina (nb it may be spelt completely differently to this!). Afraid that it might be horribly alcoholic, I tried only a sip. ... read more

Hello All, Sorry if we have been quiet for afew days . We have been up country in Iguazu... but first let´s just record the fact that the best meal we had in BA and probably the whole trip was in El Establo - a brilliant little Parilla (Grill) restaurant that was recommeneded by Steve´s friend Shirley - thanks Shirely - it were great! We left BA as planned on Monday early but then ran into our second problem of the trip. On arrival at Iguazu - on the Agentinian side - there was no sign of anyone to meet us. This was pre booked and paid for so you can image how we felt. Half an hour alone in a deserted airport is enough to convince you to jump in the nearest willing taxi whatever ... read more

16th April - 20th April First day in Rio I took in a few tourist hotspots- Christ the Redeamer (really strange as there is an escalator and lift up to it!), the tiled steps at Lapa where we met the Chilian artist who made it, Santa Theresa the old-style artistic quarter, the cathedral and finally went up to Sugar Loaf to see the sun setting. Rio looks absolutely amazing from up there. Second day I spent a bit of time on Copacabana and Leblon beaches- again just stunning panoramics, then went to a boat party at night (very touristy though!). Next day went with a charity to see a favella. This was by far the most interesting thing I did in Rio, it´s just extraordinary how people manage to live in conditions like that. The favella ... read more

After 20 hours on a plane, a bus ride and a long walk dragging my backpack to the hostel - I've finally made it to South America! I'm staying at mellow yellow party hostel. It's basic, but clean and we get free caipirinhas during happy hour (a very important deciding factor, as you can imagine (thanks ali)) and full of interesting and fun people. So far I haven't spent a second by myself, which is exactly what I wanted. The lonely planet guide describes Rio as “one of the world's wildest and most scenic cites” and I couldn't agree more! Stunning scenery, rolling waves, white sandy beaches, thong bikinis and budgie smugglers everywhere. It really lives up to all the pictures you see and yes girls the men really are gorgeous! Possibly even better in real ... read more

Copacabana, Rio de Janiero. The name of the place just brings to mind images of scantily clad girls in bikinis and of course Carnivale.... so before anyone else asks, no I didn't go to Carnivale. I was there too late in the year by about 1 month. That means that Carnivale happened whilst I was traipsing around the Antarctic and I know which experience I'd prefer to have. Which is exactly why I organised things in the order that I did. This was also the end of the line for the Intrepid tour which meant that again I was having to say goodbye to friends. Some of whom I hope to continue my friendship with for years to come. But we still had some life in this tour yet. On the afternoon that we got there ... read more

Hi everyone To continue our travels in Chile - we flew from Santiago to Puerto Montt on the way to Puerto Varas. This is a lovely little lakeside place (Lake Llanquihue). Beyond the lake was a beautiful snow covered volcano (Osorno) - so pictuesque. The beach was crowded, but the black volcanic sand was not to our liking. The water was crystal clear. Puerto Varas is known as the city of roses - they are everywhere. Many Germans settled here in the late 1800´s, and their influence can be seen in the buildings and the food. We cannot believe how many roses we have seen in S A. We heard some wonderful musicians here - another surprise. There was a fabulous concert in the street, where we heard all sorts of music including a very nice ... read more

Carnaval Well we had a week in Copacabana for carnaval and it was absolutely amazing! We met some amazing people and had the most incredible time even though it rained for most of the week, it did not stop us from partying just as hard! We arrived at our hostel in Copacabana at about 8pm and whilst checking in we straight away got asked by a bunch of people to head out with them! Most of the people staying there were English speaking, being mainly English with a scattering of Americans and Australians so communication was not a problem! So we dumped our bags and headed straight out to Lapa, which we were told is great for a night out! In Lapa we visited the famous tiled steps, and they were quite hidden away, at ... read more

It´s been a while in travel time since the last blog, we have done alot and not so much... It all began with Carnaval. The unfortunate dampner of the rainy weather in Rio, which actually forced my jeans out of my pack (regrettably mind you, I mistook rain for cold) did not take any sort of toll on the celebrations, and celebrate the Brazilians can! Carnaval is like nothing we have ever really experienced before, the city basically shuts down for 5 days so everyone can dress up, get drunk and samba!! So thats what we did. Basically carnaval in Rio is like heaps of street parades all over the city, they have a starting point and an ending point, you can join in any parade (called a ´bloco´), and follow around a truck with a ... read more
