I haven't written here in ages, because I haven't traveled in ages. But two days ago I returned from a brief vacation I managed to pull off, and here's the story: Six hours before my flight was leaving Copenhagen Airport, I realized my passport was in an impossibly difficult location. Sadly, it was sharing this location with my identification, another essential item for any voyage. You see, I was traveling to South America, Brazil to be exact, Rio de Janeiro to be even more precise, and the only thing that almost every travel page had in common was the advice to bring copies of your ID and passport with you everywhere. Meanwhile your actual documents should lay securely in an expensive hotel room or a safe at a hostel. Ordinarily, I think that sort of precautionary ... read more

Walking. My face is whipped by sharp icicles falling fast from the black sky. Tiny, perfect formations of frozen water particles, each and every one of them unique, supposedly. I can't tell, they all sting the same as they crash into my cold cheeks. I'm wondering why I'm doing this to myself. “Sure you want to go for a walk in this?” ask Ingemar as I exit the car. “Oh, but the warmth of our fireplace will be even better after I've been outside!” I answer with the cockiness of a person whose feet are still dry and cozy. Good thought in theory, and one I'm eating as I'm walking in the hostile snow that doesn't fall so much as attacks me sideways. I'm half regretting my outdoor initiative, but then I see a horse standing ... read more

Sweden - Hedonist: 1-0. Things have been rough lately. Let me illustrate what I mean by pasting in parts of what this entry looked like when I first wrote it: “I've been waiting to write here again. Waiting for things to improve, waiting to feel better. I didn't want to crush my image of content aloofness, inner strength and at times nearly maniacal bliss. Not only the image you might have of me, but more importantly, the image I have of me. The person I can relate to, the person I feel is really me, she would never write an entry like the one that's being composed here. She would never fall this far, she would never crash this hard. She would never go to sleep wishing she had Valium to take the edge of ... read more

The ubiquitous and equally mysterious authority that we commonly refer to as “they” claim everything bad brings something good with it, and generally I'm with them. But then there are times when the positive effects of a situation are so hard to spot that one almost loses faith in the adage, and not surprisingly my deportation - still fresh in my memory - springs to mind as the perfect example of such occasion. It was pretty damn hard to grasp just how that particular personal catastrophe would turn out to be beneficial to me. However, even during that now famous border control debacle, I managed to find positive elements in my new position just minutes after I had been handed the dismal verdict from Anna the Interviewer. Once I had established what solid advantages were to ... read more

My stay in Oslo was absolutely lovely, and the quiet, easy life with my brother served as a perfect hiatus from everything that’s been going on in my life since that tragic day at the Sydney Airport. Now I’m back in Malmoe again, mourning that the blissful existence with my brother didn’t last a bit longer. My days were beautiful in their simplicity; a morning walk in the Vigelands-park, both mind-cleansing and inspiring, and for the rest of the day I wrote, baked delicious bread, did laundry and cooked dinner for Christian and myself. I was one apron short of the perfect house wife, let me tell you, and a modern one at that; whenever I felt like I needed a break from being creative or doing chores, I’d pick up the plastic guitar and play ... read more

I’ve really, really missed writing this blog. Really. Recap of the last 4-5 months: Back in March, when I had to return to Sweden for a month because my Australian Work Visa ran out, Life asked me to rethink my home country as a possible habitat. Considering how things turned out, that’s quite ironic. Or brutal, depending on how you see it. To convince me moving back home would be fabulous, Life threw the most compelling argument she had at me; Scandinavian sunshine. To an outsider it might be hard (if at all possible) to understand how extraordinary this is, but being something of a rarity to us Swedes, we happily relish in the slightest bit of warmth, and feel strangely privileged when the weather is good. And Swedish spring really is something else. The air ... read more

During my first week in Sweden I fell into a mild case of depression, mostly caused by a visa situation that looked bleak, to say the least. The notion of being unable to return to Sydney like planned caused 10 sleepless nights, and when I finally got word that I had been granted some additional time in the Land of Laidback-ness, I could barely contain my elation. ‘Giddy’ is the best word to describe my immediate reaction, and I’m forever grateful no one was around to witness me clench my fists and utter unintelligible nonsense in a fit of joy. After all, I have an image of cool savoir-fair to maintain. After this past weekend my heart is bursting at the seams with gratitude and love, and I don’t see why I shouldn’t spend the rest ... read more

Due to perfectly crisp and sunny spring weather in Flagstaff while Santa Cruz suffered overcast and rain for several days in a row, I extended my Arizona days a fair bit. I had intended to spend only one night in Flag (my backpack with one change of clothes confirming this original idea), which would be just enough time to collect my stuff and turn around, but by the time I eventually left it had been 10 days. By now I had secured my spot in the house as an ever welcomed guest by making a Swedish pancake breakkie for everyone, and I had enjoyed Flagstaff to its fullest; a couple of nights out dancing, hiking in Sedona, and during my last weekend I even made an overnight hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. When ... read more

Michelle said she’d lend me her bike while I’m in Santa Cruz, but I’d have to fix the flat first, so on the first Monday after my arrival I took it down to the Bike Church. However, Monday was also President’s Day, and on the door was a note that read: “Due to Lance Armstrong’s ongoing relationship with Ashley Olsen the Bike Church will not be open today. Oh also, it’s President’s Day! :) “ This President is one I’m happy to celebrate, and the lovely volunteers at the Bike Church gave me a good chuckle along with the bad news, so it didn’t bother me that I couldn’t get my vehicle working as soon as I had been hoping to. Kevin’s work was just around the corner, so I dropped off the bike in their ... read more

On Jan 31 I walk up to the Qantas check-in counter with one large and one small backpack. The woman behind the counter has long, blonde hair and clumpy mascara, and judging from the way she greets me I’m guessing she’s had a long day already. She prompts me for my passport, and when I hand it to her she flips through it hastily and asks me where the documentation for my flight out of the States is. My brain goes numb and I feel a bit of panic setting in. “I beg your pardon?” She repeats that she needs to see a printout of my ticket out of the US. How come I’ve never run into this problem before? I think to myself. It’s not like this is my first time flying to the States, ... read more
