OK, so who wrote the song? You get a beautiful day for your prize if you get it right! The best weather of the trip to the island so far today, but the worst snorkelling. While it was absolutely lovely above the surface, below a storm was billowing sand and weed around making it difficult to see and even difficult to swim. I went to the mythical eastern shore to two new devastatingly handsome beaches. Other than that, I went back to my favorite beaches where I had not yet snorkelled in the sunshine only to find an undersea storm taking away the views. There´s always tomorrow. Hanging out on beaches all day watching the waves crash, people watching, as the wealthy Paulistas serenade in their skimpy bathing costumes (everyone: from grandad to grand child, from ... read more

Well, it´s the end of another first class day, but tinged with a hint of sadness. The weather was excellent for the first half of the day, clouds gathering during the late afternoon, and now, 7:30, it´s torrential rain. All the giant puddles that showed signs of shrinkage earlier today have been well and truly refilled. Tomorrow´s inevitable heat will create the perfect conditions for mosquitos to breed, including the ones that give you Dengue fever, the current scariest disease of the day. Some kid has just come down with the disease, a friend of Gabi and Adriannas, to much consternation here. I guess he contracted the disease in Recfife, buty started to show symtoms when he arrived here, and he´s being shipped to Recife for treatment, although there is no really effective treatment out there. ... read more

Happy fourth to one and all!! The weather was more than perfect today - although as I say that it is just started bucketing down with rain! It´s 8:30pm at the end of an impossibly gorgeous day. I got up early having missed last night´s party. Interestingly, the party began at midnight and went on till 5:00am. Go figure. What people do is take an early evening nap then get up at 11:30pm and go out. My alarm went off, but I just ignored it and slept the night. I was surprisingly efficient this morning, doing my laundry (by hand), going to the airport where the only functioning cash machine exists (I almost had heart failure when I discovered last night that I am currently spending at 4 times my already generous budget!), then got back ... read more

I got my first snorkle set up yesterday, and even though it was a bit cloudy, so visibility wasn´t the best, what fun I had! A great way to eradicate the unpleasantness of Pousada N´Janda. I must remember to publish warnings about this scoundrel on every internet forum from here to Timbuktu! The first main event was swimming into a giant school of fish, seeing the whole shape of the school, the edges as clear as a bubble. It´s just great to be inside one of these hive like bubbles. I couldn´t keep up and soon the edge swept past me. The second major thing was a giant sting ray resting on the rocks about seven or eight feet, including the tail. I hovered over him for a while, till he got bored of me ... read more

The island is incredibly spectacular. I spent all yesterday walking from one incredible and completely pristine beach, over rocky headlands to the next equally spectacular one. I did not see a single piece of trash all day. It´s like a timewarp here, back to the pristine world of the past. The villages are set up for tourists, but there´s hardly any tourists here - the flight was prohibitively expensive, then there´s the $30 a day eco-tax, that´s all before you find accomodation, or eat. I have a bunch of great pictures but no usb port to access the computer I´m working on, so I´ll just have to settle for superlatives for now. Every rockpool is teeming with colorful tropical fish, the water is deliciously warm and is teeming with schools, even universities, of gorgeous, exotic fish. ... read more

What a great couple of days I´ve had! Started meeting people finally that spoke a little english, which was quite a relief after a week of portospanofrancosign language. Oh to speak engloportospanofrancosign language again! So if Friday´s events were fun, Saturday´s were even more fascinating. Andre and Julio and I hit three more festas on Saturday, with me finally getting back to the pousada at 4:30 am all danced out! They had taken me to the local favella parties, the places that gringo´s don´t go unaccompanied, but with Julio and Andre I was given a ´free´ pass. What incredible scenes! I don´t mean my atrocious, though amusing, attempts to dance in the forro style. I must have snapped a few people´s toes in my clumsy eforts to blend. I´m meeting everyone at the parties, including Fernando ... read more

What a crazy night that was! Andre walked me down to the internet cafe, then invited me to join him for a party with some friends. Now if ´´Homeland Paci´´ had o´ been in town I probably would have said no. But it was just me, so I thought, ´why not?´ So about 1:00am we roll back to the Pousada, having been to four parties, each of them featuring live bands playing loud forro music, everybody singing along and dancing it up, three of the festas were in the streets, one of them a quasi political/ poetry ´do´ in the middle of Recife. At one point, I realized, while perched in the boys room, that if Andre disappeared with his amusing buddy Julio, I would neither have the means or the wherewithal to find my way ... read more

Backpacker heaven! We negotiated a price at the wonderful Casa Maloca which more than rivalled any hostel in town. Toni, the landlord, is from Slovakia but has lived in Brazil for 20 years. He looked after us very well and we were sad to only stay for 3 nights. The kitchen was fantastic and to eat on the veranda overlooking the skyscrapers of Recife was quite something. Actually, sitting there for breakfast was a particular highlight too, with more than enough fresh tropical fruit, delicious coffee, mango juice and hot German bread. Bliss!! You don't just go to Toni's pousada for the hospitality and the breakfast though, the whole house is an art gallery. He even has a print of a piece commissioned for the football World Cup which is an amazing work of art. The ... read more
