OH MY GOD WE´RE HERE!!!!!! This is nearly the last leg of the trip and one I have waited for since I was small! We are in Recife in east Brazil (look on the map) where my uncle Albert and his family have lived for nearly 15 years. It was a nightmare journey from Miami- first there were some amusing security issues leaving the USA where Dan and I had a special search!, then we had to change in Sao Paolo making it a 17 hour journey overnight. The chaos and disorganised SP airport was horrible, but we and our bags arrived safely- something we thought wouldnt happen! so we were knackered when we arrived for lunch with the family. We are lucky to have my aunt Dayse off this week to act as our tour ... read more

Sorry folks, but this one has to be short. I am currently outside of Recife in Porto de Galinhas. I spent from Saturday until Wednesday, all of Carnaval, in Rio with a bunch of friends. We had a great time. Mostly we just accompanied the street parties, blocos, and then went to see live music at night. On Tuesday night, we went to a club in Lapa, the colonial district of Rio, and saw live Samba. The drums were AMAZING....You could feel every beat and even a stiff gringo couldn´t help but be swept into the music. It was really fantastic. Originally, I was planning to make it to the Amazon, but the flight and the lodging was going to come to something like $1750 USD, so I decided against it. I will have to do ... read more

Technically I'm not writing this from Fernando de Noronha, as I'm now in Maceio. However, I never had time to write my blog while on the island because the internet is so expensive. For those who don't know, Fernando de Noronha is an island approximately 500km off the coast of Brazil. After spending five days there, I have to say its pretty fantastic and I don't even dive or surf, which are two of the main reasons for visiting. I went on a tour arranged for me by Dolphin Travel in Recife. This meant that two of my full three days were occupied. The first morning was spent on a boat tour round the island. The only problem was the tour was in Portuguese, luckily I found some a couple of Americans to act my ... read more

I've now got just over a day left in Olinda, my next destination is the Archipeglo of Fernando de Noronha, which I fly out to on Tuesday. I did make it to Fatboy slim on Thursday night, he was pretty good. Most of the music would have been recognisable to somefrom the UK. His set didn't start till 0:30 and went on till 3:00. While I was there I was adopted by a group of local students, who were all aged around 18, who thought I was crazy and/or brave to be travelling on my own! Most of them only spoke a bit of Portuguese, so the one who spoke the best English acted as my translator. They even came from Olinda, so managed to share a taxi back home. I've exchanged emails with one of ... read more

After spending over 14 hours travelling, I finally made it to Brazil. I can't really complain about my journey, except for the extra hour spent in the sky between Lisbon and Recife. My pousada (guest house in brazil) decided to welcome me with a caipirinha (a cocktail), which definitely helped after all that travelling. I'm currently in a town called, Olinda, which is down the coast from Recife. Olinda is pretty beautiful, full of palm trees, churches and art shops / galleries. I'll put up some photos later. Its quite hilly, which makes it difficult to explore when your body is adjusting to the heat and a new time zone. Its also surprisingly easy to get lost! My first travel buddy is an American called Will, who arrived at exactly the same time as the me. ... read more

Empezamos a escribir estas lineas desde una hamaca de nuestra Pousada en Noronha, como aqui les gusta llamar a la isla. I promessed to write something in English so that some of you can follow, I hope it helps, but you have to make an effort with your Spanish as well (and don´t be rude Pastor).

4th December - 11th December Arriving in Beautiful Olinda was like stepping back in time. Having arrived late a night, i quickly checked into my hostel, and took a wander around. Street lamps light up the cobble stoned streets, reminding me of my travels in Prague in Czech republic. I stayed at Albergue De Olinda- colourfully filled hostel...and has a pool!!! woohoo! Olinda is beautiful. in striking contrast to its sister town of Recife (the commercial centre of the region). Apparently the name came about when one of the founders, satnding at a high viewpoint, whispered 'o Linda', meaning 'how nice'. i stood at the same area where he fell in love with the town. now the church Igreja da Se satnds there and commands the beautiful views from its terrace. walking through the streets, you ... read more

The Northeast of Brazil is known for it´s beaches - white sand, swaying coconut palms, blue-green water, massive dunes, giant capital cities of festivals and sleeping fishing villages. But this is merely the crust. The mass of the Northeast begins only a few hundred kilometers inland; as you pass, the vibrant green of the coastal strip fades, the rolling hills transformed into rocky crags. In places, the horizon stretches indefinitely, a flat landscape of twisted shrub and cacti in wide variety. There is little water here. Occassionally one sees a small lake or a muddy puddle. More often it is only the memory of water - a dry river or creekbed of red earth. It´s hot and dry, literally an oven. My mouth is sticky and my throat cracks. My nose is dry and my eyes ... read more

I'm in a city called Caruaru, slightly into the interior of Pernambuco. The coast here is beautiful; green, rolling hills, cane and coconuts swaying in the breeze. It's only a short trip inland before everything turns brown, rocky. But this isn't the sertão, yet. That doesn't truly begin until Arcoverde, further interior still. The city survives on clothing. Yesterday was the day of the Tuesday street fair, and epic weekly event that the city lives and survives on. The night before, there was an energy in the streets of anticipation. Push carts lined the sidewalks and sleeping bodies lined the carts. The market commences at 3am Tuesday until about noon, but it doesn't really get busy until about 6am. The vendors have come from all the surrounding towns; most of the clothing they are selling is ... read more
