The next few days after our hectic weekend were spent fairly lazily, so much so that I will endeavour to squeeze them into one blog entry. On Monday, I walked across town with Daniel to Mike's gaff and spent a bit of time over there, having a good first cousin to first cousin chat. We discussed birds, cameras and more birds. Mike showed me some pictures of Carnaval 2006 in Rêcife - they go wild over here around then, I don't think there's a comparable event in Ireland, it's nuts. Mike got hoisted up in a Height-for-Hire thing on one of the main bridges in the city, with a bird's-eye view of all the happenings. He's a shrewd fella, our Mike; his work paid for the whole thing! He did it first in 2005 and they ... read more

It was Sunday morning, bright and early and our weekend was but halfway through. Today's trip was to be up north to Joao Pessoa for some beach time with our driver from yesterday, but as had been the case a lot of times in Rêcife, this was not to be. Since the elections were on, Pedro and Monica had to work a lot more (they are both journalists) so it didn't look like they were coming. This brought numbers down significantly so we decided to tell Paddy Busdriver to take an early shower and we'd make our way down in a few cars. The choice of destination had changed also, it was to be Porto do Galinhos (Port of Chickens) about a hundred clicks south of Rêcife. Easy peasy, right? After going around the ring road ... read more

I’ve always felt that the best gauge of the true pulse of a city is to wander the streets during one of the day’s busiest times. While the tour group perused the gift shops at Casa Cultural for a little souvenir shopping, I slipped outside for a brisk walk through the teeming side streets of the central market district in Recife. The call of the vendors, the clap of the hands to signal a potential customer, the stalls of leather belts and sandals, pyramids of fruit stacked at the ready, and the smell of street food such as grilled meat or tapioca omelets create the seamless ebb and flow of daily living. You can purchase most of your household necessities within a radius of only four or five blocks. Throngs of pedestrians crossing the bridge as ... read more

A few hundred kilometers off of Brazils northeast coast there is a small group of islands named Fernando de Noronha. Its there that I made my next stop. The phrase island paradise is a bit overused nowadays, but I can't think of a better way to describe Noronha. The amazing sights of the island began with the from the window of the plane ride here, and have continued ever since. Everywhere I look are views worthy of photographs, but thats just the start to what is amazing about this place. Noronha is every bit as beautiful as any island in the Carribean or Pacific, perhaps more. There are long, seemingly deserted beaches with soft sand and great waters for surfing, swimming or other water activities. Pictures are worth a thousand words and I'll let them ... read more

The main reason we were spending nine days in Pernambuco was to spend some quality time with the family. This weekend was to be the best opportunity to spend this time with said family. Aidan rented a van from some poor unfortunate fucker who didn't know what he was letting himself in for, and we went around picking up the various people who were coming along. Originally supposed to come were Monica, Pedro, Matheus, Alannah, Michael, Nandinha, and of course Aidan, but Nandinha had been sick for the last few days and was still fairly under the weather so they weren't going to be coming. Telma, Aidan's current bird, came along instead. We packed into the little minibus and headed off for the interior, planning to end up in a town called Caruaru, about 130km from ... read more

Thursday morning saw the intrepid five up early and without Aidan for once. However, his hand could be felt (not literally) in proceedings as he had organised a three hour bus tour for us in Rêcife, Olinda, and all points in between. Our guide was a very enthusiastic English-speaking Brazilian named William, with his driver whose name presently escapes me. Both could speak English and ein Bisschen Deutsch; I reckon they must have taken turns doing the driving and the touring. Anyway... William soon had a groggy Irish family roaring and whooping, putting everyone in a pretty good mood. Nothing unusual there, you say. We went along the beachfront of Boa Viagem on our way to Rêcife Antigo and William pointed out all the exercise and sports facilities that are free to all to use; it ... read more

Still ponds draped in vines and submerged palm trees create a natural and paradise-like backdrop for the exploration and appreciation of a tropical Brazilian island. Neat rows of corn are ready for harvest, as is the ripe and exotic (but sour) fruit of the acerola tree. The children who live in Pequeno Nazareno get around by foot or bicycle. The adults who look after them make use of very little motorized traffic themselves. On lazy mornings before class, the boys fish for freshwater shrimp in the central pond near the slide and diving board. It is the focal point for living quarters, schoolhouses, a cantina, and the main entrance of the compound. Well maintained ashen brick roads connect these and other points to form a model community of which its founders and managers are extremely proud. ... read more

Olinda exists as Recife’s cultural release valve. A retreat from Pernambuco’s intense, run down, and chaotic capital, it possesses all the characteristics of a colonial town, but is a more humid and steamier version of its competition in Minas Gerais. Wherever I go, at any hour, a coat of perspiration covers my head and neck. Bathing is only a temporary reprieve from the stickiness. Lofty coconut palms rise above the town’s orange tiled roofs. The turquoise Atlantic batters nearby beaches, viewable from Olinda’s Praça da Sé in its upper town. Seven miles further south rises Recife’s massive strip of skyline into which Denver’s would fit at least eight times. Apartment high rises and office buildings run the length of the coast until the day’s haze impedes further vision. Only a few thousand yards offshore, the various ... read more

Hallo lieverds!!! Ik ben helaas weer terug in stink-Recife. :( Ik mis RIO. Is nu echt mijn favo stad geworden.
