I got my first snorkle set up yesterday, and even though it was a bit cloudy, so visibility wasn´t the best, what fun I had! A great way to eradicate the unpleasantness of Pousada N´Janda. I must remember to publish warnings about this scoundrel on every internet forum from here to Timbuktu!
The first main event was swimming into a giant school of fish, seeing the whole shape of the school, the edges as clear as a bubble. It´s just great to be inside one of these hive like bubbles. I couldn´t keep up and soon the edge swept past me.
The second major thing was a giant sting ray resting on the rocks about seven or eight feet, including the tail. I hovered over him for a while, till he got bored of me and flapped away.
The third event was the most exciting for me, also a first: swimming with two gigantic sea turtles. They let me swim with them for ten minutes. When they went up to breathe, so did I, to see their great heads break the surface and gulp in air. I found that my swimming stroke matched theirs. They were flying through the water.
I, on the other hand, was far less elegant. Eventually they swam over some shallow rocks that were too risky for me to follow. Their shells were the same size as my body.
I like to wear a shirt in the water while I swim. Today it was a red shirt. The shirt seemed to be very attractive to the Sergeant Majors in the water (very common yellow and black, or blue and black stripped reef fish) because when I looked back a whole load were following me. They kept coming right up to the mask and making eye contact. It was very exciting.
I guess not swimming for a while started to catch up with me: after not more than an hour I was getting out for a break - back in the day I would snorkle for three or four hours at a time! The weather had been a bit cloudy for much of the day. If the snorkling was this good in low light my appetite was thoroughly whetted for the inevitable sunny days ahead.
Sandy, Anna, Jose, and myself had a very enjoyable meal last night. I didn´t think I´d meet someone who was even crazier
Booby on a rock
That´s the bird´s name, I´m assured! about travel than I, but Sandy is that person. She doesn´t just travel during summer, she travels during every vacation!
During the night it absolutely bucketed down. It´s still raining now, about 9:30 in the morning. All the plans for major snorkelling are on hold. Time for a good book and journal writing. Oh, and internet scribbling too. Hey, I might even catch up with Dr. Who episodes on youtube. The pathways are giant red mud puddles, the little cats are looking bored, but wait...is the rain stopping as I write? Is that a brightening in the sky?
See you on the flypaper.
