The most beautiful place in the world! (seriously)
Published: April 14th 2009South America » Brazil » Pernambuco » Fernando de NoronhaWe splurged on a trip to Fernando de Noronha, an island off of the Pernambuco coast of Brazil, and have absolutely no regrets... it was an amazing place and is home to the most beautiful beaches we've ever seen! I am not exaggerating... if you go to one place in Brazil, it should be Fernando de Noronha. Hmmm, I'm already regretting writing this, since I hope to go back one day and don't want to contribute to it becoming even more popular! ;) The photos speak for themselves, but here is a brief description of how we spent 5 fun days on Noronha: Booking the trip Since Brazilian airlines do not allow foreigners without national ID numbers to book online, we had to go through a travel agency. We looked up the airfare online (we flew ... read more

Last Day - or is it?
Published: July 15th 2008South America » Brazil » Pernambuco » Fernando de NoronhaI´m going to the airport in a minute to change my ticket to stay here an extra day. If I don´t , I´ll have an extra day in Olinda that I don´t really need, whereas one extra day here will be excellent. What a fantastic day yesterday was. I saw the other side of George: the skipper of the yacht. I realised that all these days hanging around, but I hadn´t seen one of the most important parts of the guy´s personality. It´s like knowing me without a guitar! The day looked a bit cloudy again but we decided to go for it anyway. We took a little dinghy out to the sailboat about 11:00am. What a beauty! It is a french made boat from the 70´s that cuts through the waves strong and true. George, ... read more
Yesterday was another solid rainy/cloudy day. In the early evening it started raining particularly hard. I did go for a swim in the port earlier, where I followed a couple of turtles around for a while, but it was getting late by the time I went in and, with the waves coming in strong and not much sun, it only took thirty minutes before starting to feel cold. The sky held banks of those flat bottomed clouds sailing across the horizon like black Spanish galleons: it was these clouds that were to curl around and paste the island during the evening. Today, so far is looking good. George owns a sailboat and was talking about just going for a sail today, if the weather was ok. I hope that´s what happens, but if it doesn´t, I´m ... read more
I´m only doing that to fit in with my buddies! I know what day it is, honest! It´s the day after I recorded the now 13 songs onto my camera, used up the entire memory card, and had to start transfering them to a flash drive I brought with me. The weather has been more than dubious here for the last three days, so the fact that I´ve been sitting in George´s house, jamming these songs (the 13 songs collectively have now got a title coutesy of George - Anum Cara. It means ´´Soul mates´´) , watching BBC, eating a great British breakfast the other day, then chicken and chips, including chip butties (french fry sandwiches, for the unitiated) yesterday, is absolutely fine. Today so far has been the cloudiest and rainy of the three. George ... read more
Yesterday was a great day, but it was not a day of beaches and snorkelling, you´ll be relieved to read! Dani and I went over to George´s house. I had my journal with me: Today I was going to work on the ´Rock Opera´ we started the other night. Dani and George went out for a meal while I got started. By time they got back, I had the first 3 songs written: The first was based on a story George had told two nights ago. The second was a story that Dani had told to his students during an improvised philosophy/ drama lesson. From there the collection started to grow. The two big stories that Dani and George had told blended together into a somewhat abstract but charming story. If I wrote out the plot ... read more
The friendly people at Your Way have a collection of photos on their computer that other tourists left for them and are free for, what Adrianna and Gabi call, ´clients´to use. I´ve trawled through and found the following collection of things that I´ve seen. This is only a fraction of the wonderful things I´ve seen. There are so many amazing sights that I can´t believe haven´t been stored here by fellow tourists. Anyway, it´s better than nothing, eh? See you on the flypaper, mike... read more
Spotted eagle ray day
Published: July 11th 2008South America » Brazil » Pernambuco » Fernando de NoronhaToday I caught the first whiff of the next part of the trip. I still have five days left of the stay here. I got up made coffee, fed the six or so cats that live here then sat around with Dani to close to midday. Last night George invited us over for a beer. Turned out he had two excellent guitars at his house and a set of drums. I hungrily grabbed a guitar and basically played an accompaniment to the everning´s wide ranging and somewhat abstract conversations. When the conversation changed direction, I changed the music to fit the new subject. After a few hours of this, fueled by the bizarre and lively life stories, especially of George, I realised that I could have written an entire rock opera if I only had my ... read more
I want to thank everyone who has sent me a message concerning the death of my lovely cat. It really helped me to start to come to terms with his death. I cried for him last night. I remembered all the funny little things he did: the way he used to play ´´fetch´´ with the metal clasps from wine bottles, the way he always directed you to whether to throw the thing into the bathtub or the kitchen, the time he climbed into the back of a removal van and ended up on the Cape, the way he used to like to nest in your underwear while you were taking a dump, how he climbed into the bathtub after you had showered and licked the water off the bathtub walls, the way he would stretch out ... read more
Boy had to be put to sleep today. He was a wonderful cat and a friend to me. I´ll never forget him, and I´ll miss him. I want to thank Almitra, Richard, and Katie, for doing everything possible to save him. It wasn´t possible. Life can be cruel at times, and today was such a day for us. mike ... read more
