29 January, Monday... Arrived in Sucre bright and early and was surprised to find some friends from La Paz already awake and taking breakfast in the courtyard of the hostel after a rather heavy night out before. That is after finding the place, one block from the bus station turned out to be five minutes in taxi. As they'd already been there a day I trusted their advice and jumped on the Dino Truck in the afternoon. It turned out not to be so great, basically it involves a trip to see some dinosaur footprints from across a valley and lots of life-size plastic dinosaurs in a theme park after getting there in a pick up truck. It was amusing but seriously I wouldn't recommend it. After waiting hours for food in a restaurant all that ... read more

Well, we are coming to the end of our trip... and the date we fly to NZ is scarily close! But we still have some adventures to go, so here we go... Sucre Sucre is the judicial capital of Bolivia and the centre has been designated a UNESCO world heritage site (they are one busy organisation!) because of all of the white colonial buildings. The city itself is possibly one of the nicest we´ve visited in South America so far (Cuenca in Ecuador is up there as well). We spent some time wandering the city and enjoyed some great food in a small restaurant (we used our wedding anniversary as an excuse to splash out on a bottle of wine and the bill still only came to $20 USD). Naera did a day or so of ... read more

Ross: The night bus to Sucre had been made out to be an absolute nightmare of a trip in a stone age bus, over roads that were little more than dirt tracks. In reality the bus was quite comfy, smelled a bit and not quite enough leg room, and the roads although they were dirt tracks they weren’t to bad - bit bumpy now and again but the ride was smooth enough. We arrived in Sucre a lot earlier than scheduled (because we couldn’t get the later bus from Cochabamba) and headed to the hotel with no guarantee of a room for a couple of hours. The hotel was pretty grand and served an excellent breakfast with fresh fruit at long last. Not really much to say about this first day in Sucre other than it’s ... read more

Feliz Navidad! Well I´ve had that ringing around my ears for a few days, mostly due to a catchy little Christmas tune played over and over (and over) again in various places. "Feliz Navidad.. Feliz Navidad..." etc. etc. Hello from Sucre, an unexpected find for us in Bolivia - for a country where poverty is quite rife parts of Sucre are surprisingly swanky. There are some lovely colonial buildings (new paint as well!) and a few Chelsea Tractors cruising the cobbled streets. A nice spot for us to rest our weary legs (hmm) for Christmas. We´ve splashed out a bit on a 4 star hotel, suite and swimming pool. I say splashed out, in London this may require donning balaclavas and an AK to get the money to pay for it but in Bolivia, for as ... read more

We finished our last week of school for the year on an interesting note... I told my kids to pee in their desks and James called one of his students a 'female dog'! Not on purpose... we inserted a few wrong letters when trying to speak spanish. I wanted to get my kids to clean their desks and James was attempting to tell one of his students that she was lazy. My kids thought it was hilarious and wanted to pee straight away. But all up, it was a good end to the year and end to my teaching stint at Highlands... we had a fiesta and played lots of games. A few days after school had finished we thought we should explore more of Bolivia... so we jumped into our jeep and headed south. Our ... read more

Well suffice to say that this blog entry is slightly overdue. I'll keep it brief and you can look at the pictures! We arrived in Sucre and went to live with our host family in a very smart apartment block. They had 2 children and a dog and we ended up with a very pleasant room with a nice view of Sucre. We spent 2 weeks studying Spanish at a language school. We managed to fit a few activites in between our studies like visiting the famous market at Tarabuco and joining in the "Day of the Dead" celebrations. After 2 weeks we started our planned voluntary work in an orphanage for disabled children. Ally had a class of 4 year olds whilst Amelia was working with the 7/8 yr olds. They had a range of ... read more

I left Sucre a little sad, that was amazing city! i hope one day i can get back there! See everybidy soon! Bruno!... read more

Sucre is just another city really in which I settled for a few days without anything too interesting to report. Sucre however standing at 2904 metres above sea level is the highest capital city in the World but some books may contradict this statement and say that La Paz is the capital. After independence Sucre was apparently made the capital. (Yes I wish they would make up their mind as well) The journey to Sucre from Uyoni was 11 hours with 8 hours being along what has to be the worst road ever. (So I thought until I saw the death road!). With no tarmac and just a dirt stone track around mountains you jigged that hard that by the time the bus stopped your whole body was still vibrating……and as per usual we broke down! ... read more
