Ok, so I'm either super crazy or incredibly cool. But we'll get to that. Last week I went scuba diving with the sharks at AQWA, the Aquarium of Western Australia. They ranged in size from babies and port charles something or another up to 10 and 11 foot bull sharks. It was wonderful. I was very nervous about it before I put on my wetsuit, but I got over it real fast and loved it. The scariest part wasn't the sharks, it was the turtles. There were two, both of them were named Eddie. Yeah. They would follow me around and try to bite my fins. I accidently kicked one in them face on my exit. I found four shark teeth on the bottom that I'm bringing home with me. So this may be my last ... read more

Hello there valued readers this is my first blog entry, written from my very own bedroom somewhere north of Townsville. Lets keep that location private shall we, you know, for all those stalkers out there (you know who you are!). Well the time is getting closer my friend! Plenty of saving to do! Ok so there's exactly 5 weeks til i leave. Money is scarce at the moment which is always good..(please insert sarcasm here). I have one car to sell to complete any missing funds i might need! Still need stuff like travel insurance so i can be sent back home for free when i break my legs snowboarding! No don't laugh, the possibilities are endless! However, unlike the other aussies overseas i don't plan on crashing any snowmobiles into oncoming trees. If i do ... read more

Its Marcus, making my first official blog entry from OZ. Mum and I arrived safe and well, can't actually belive I am here. We arrived and went straight off to the mountians, was quite interesting but realy wanted to freshen up so went for a swim on the beach as the sun went down. The appartments are amazing, kind of undersold by the others, realy modern and amazing circular bath tub and balconys. Just been out for dinner, and maybe its jetlag or maybe excitment, but lauren and I have come to the web cafe while the others go to sleep. Appart from dad, who is making another work call- sabatical? Will post more after Ayers Rock, as the only web cafe there cost $18 per hour, will just make lots of mental notes and fill ... read more

Greetings from Adelaide, the quiet acheiver (lonely planet) of Oz Cities. Firstly I notice from my viewing stats that '83 Cobbold Road" my test entry back in February has higher stats than 'Where Eagles Dare' my skydive in Taupo, there is no justice on this earth! So if you haven't read about my Skydive then you know where to go, and beware the DVD!! Anyways, I'm now in Adelaide which I reached on the world famous Indian Pacific Railway, got a pass. Left the dissapointing hostel in Kings Cross and got on the train and set off at 3pm on Saturday, trundled up through the impressive Blue Mountains then down into darkness. Had a load of legroom and spent most of the evening playing a fun game with some pre-schoolers in my carrige, they find an ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » 1770 July 3rd 2006

Here we are in 1770, the only town to have a name that's a number...FACT! The town derives its name from being the place where Captain James Cook first came ashore in 1770 (after Botany Bay in Sydney) in what is now the state of Queensland. Pretty cool eh? And its also a great opportunity for some HILARIOUS conversations. Observe.. 'I went surfing in 1770' 'Crikey, that's a long time ago. You should try it again sometime' It is definitely mine and Lara's favourite place on the East coast to date. A lot more sedate than Noosa or Byron, with the type of backpacker scene we like best..chilled, friendly and with a goodish surf. Unfortunately, it is definitely on the rise so I am glad we came here now. Apparently the council is strictly defending its ... read more

We've just had a fantastic 3 days onboard a 50ft yacht. We went to 3 Whitsunday islands and to Whithaven beach (apprently one of the top 10 in the world). The weather was scorching and there was just enough wind. We went diving yesterday and today, which I loved. There were a 3 others who had their Padi, so we we could go off together in a group and explore. Saw so many colourful fish, huge clams, coral and sea turtles, the water was so clear. Also while we were anchored last night a whale came up about 100m from the boat and started spouting water etc, it was truly magical. We also saw dolphins on the way back to Airle beach today. Had such a good trip! Em xx xx... read more

So, finally, after all the days of storms, the winds drop enough, and the sun comes out, and we make it to the Great Barrier Reef. After all the waiting, there's an awful feeling it must be an anticlimax, particularly when we arrive after a one and a quarter hour boat trip feeling somewhat seasick (good thing we didn't travel when the sea was supposed to be rough). Once in the water, there is no sense of anticlimax. The coral and the fish are fantastic - and yes, we did find Nemo! They are luminous in the sunlight, and more varieties than you can imagine. Even when you've been over the same spot for 2 hours, you are still seeing a new type of fish or coral every minute. The squid are scary though - they ... read more

Left Melbourne on Wednesday, arrived in Cairns and got to my hostel by about 9pm. Just my luck, it was raining. Hostel was ok ish. A long walk from anywhere, but reasonably clean. A weird bunch of people staying there though. So tried to spend as little time there as possible! Found out straight away that Cairns is a party haven (though I kind of knew that anyway) - loads of pubs/clubs, and plenty of tourists (mainly British) to boot. Spent the next day trying to avoid the rain as it was on and off all day. Finally got some sunshine on the Friday so headed down to a big outdoor pool they call "The Lagoon" and spent some chill out time. Went out each of the 3 evenings I was there, and met a few ... read more

Oceania July 3rd 2006

Today was a bit of an in between day. I had done most of what I wanted to do and see in Sydney, at least given the amount of time I had to catch my flight to Cairns later that night. I really walked around the shopping areas, but was in no mood to shop. I was convinced that everything there was pointless to get because I’d have to put it in my bag and carry it around the rest of oz before I returned- also, I know I’ll be coming back to Sydney for anything I may have missed. I walked over to the Shangri-la hotel, hoping to eat at their famous 36th floor restaurant, but it was closed, only for dinner. So, I jumped into their café for a nicely decorated, if not overly ... read more

Russell - We headed out from Coober Pedy after our tour and headed towards Port Augusta for an overnight stop. Everyone we met who we told this told us the same thing - “Don‘t stay too long.” so we were there just to overnight. We bid farewell to the outback as bit by bit we saw civilisation return. First the radio stations, then electricity pylons, then even cats eyes! Only our mobile phone signal held out to the last 10 kms. After a night in Port Augusta we made it to Adelaide the capital of South Australia. Named after William IVs Queen Adelaide (he was the one that came before Victoria) and was set up by Cornel Light. Those with a long memory will remember that name from Penang where Cornel Light’s daddy set things up ... read more
