View point between Cairns and Port Douglas
Pretty stunning. And the background is nice too.
Left Melbourne on Wednesday, arrived in Cairns and got to my hostel by about 9pm. Just my luck, it was raining. Hostel was ok ish. A long walk from anywhere, but reasonably clean. A weird bunch of people staying there though. So tried to spend as little time there as possible! Found out straight away that Cairns is a party haven (though I kind of knew that anyway) - loads of pubs/clubs, and plenty of tourists (mainly British) to boot.
Spent the next day trying to avoid the rain as it was on and off all day. Finally got some sunshine on the Friday so headed down to a big outdoor pool they call "The Lagoon" and spent some chill out time. Went out each of the 3 evenings I was there, and met a few good people, and will be meeting up again with one Kiwi guy I met when I arrive in Brisbane.
All in all Cairns is a good place for a few days if you're with a few mates. But it wasn't really my cup of tea, and was glad to move on.
Headed to Port Douglas on Saturday, and by now the weather
From Port Douglas
A small beach in Port Douglas
was gorgeous, and has been since. Staying at a resort called Dougie's. It's pretty nuts here. Nearly everyone I've met has been here weeks/months. Everyone has work as its so easy to get here. Which works for me, I've had a few days chilling, and will be looking for work tomorrow. If I do get something, I will hang around for maybe 2 weeks just so I can get a bit of money together.
Not a huge amount to do in Port Douglas, its just a good place to chill out and meet people. They have a nice beach here and its also a good base to do many of the numerous tours which are available. Me and John, a Northern Irish guy from the hostel, hired out a car today and headed up to Cape Tribulation, which is a large area of rainforests which stretch right up to the coast and borders on to some simply stunning beaches. Will hopefully do some more tours, etc. Will have to see how the money/job hunting goes.
Well thats all from me, until next time.
