Steffin and Becs wanted to have one last hurrah at the beloved Greymouth beachfront house before they packed up the final boxes and moved out. We had barely met them, but in typical Kiwi warm hospitality we were invited along to join them at a hāngi. A hāngi is a method of cooking in an outdoor earthen pit oven which involves digging a pit, heating stones over a bonfire, placing wire baskets of food on top of the stones, and covering everything with earth for several hours before lifting the hāngi. We had a great time at a hangi held by New Zealand’s honorary consul to New England in Canterbury, New Hampshire prior to departing for New Zealand. Now we were excited and prepared to attend our first hangi on the land where it originated. The ... read more

... read more

Despite having informed the Rainbow Lodge reception that I'd be leaving early, and been told that someone would be around to give me back my key deposit, no-one had materialised by the time I had to leave, so I was forced to depart for the Greyhound terminal $10 lighter than expected. The Greyhound terminal actually corresponded to a small poster on a pillar of East Perth station - hardly the most assuming of locations. The coach managed to turn up an hour late - some feat given that this was the departure point - by which time there was a gaggle of other passengers waiting. The check-in process was a complete free-for-all in terms of lack of queuing, but the driver attempted to put people who were travelling together in neighbouring seats, and people travelling on ... read more

As soon as Mick left Auckland, I booked a flight down to the South Island to see the true New Zealand! I met Mads in the hostel in Christchurch and decided to go for the stay 2 nights, get one free offer! There wasn't an awful lot to do in Christchurch but Mads had a dutch guy (bob!) coming down to see her on the 2nd day and I found out that a guy I'd met in the North Island was also in Christchurch so we managed to entertain ourselves for the 3 days spent there. Mads and I booked an intercity flexi pass which enabled us to travel on around the entire south Island for around 90 pounds sterling which was awesome. Our first stop was Lake Tekapo, a tiny place but absolutely stunning. We ... read more

Well I have arrived in Sydney. Everything everyone has said about it is true. It is a beautiful city. I'm enjoying walking about and cycling now that I have my new bike. Yes, a new bike. After taking in my Cannondale for a tune up, it was decided that a new bike was in order. I'm now on a Specialized, Sirrus hybrid. I'm due to leave on Sunday. More later.... read more

It was dejavu seeing the Harbour Bridge and Opera House again with Ian, last time it was with my dear brother and sister in law! Such a long time ago now... I've been trying to do some new things whilst in Sydney, things that I haven't done before. For starters I am not staying at the YHA Central, instead I'm at Wake Up! and love it there so much, got some brilliant room mates... Finally went to the Aquarium after wanting to go for ages! It was really cool there, made me want to be swimming again in the Great Barrier Reef and reminded me of how amazing that experience was... Some of the fish looked like they were in a state of constant whistling, it was so cute...swimming about without a care in the world! ... read more

Hi everyone, Hope you are all well and thanks for the emails from those who sent them (glad all is going well with the bub \emma). We are all well and are currently in Innamincka, having been holed up here for about 5 days. It is very dusty and isolated, but we have a beautiful campsite on the Cullyamurra Waterhole. Overview of trip as follows: Shepparton - Highlights - SPC cannery - we went in expecting to get a couple of cans and walked out with more than a trolley full! Who cares is the label is on backwards. We are still eating SPC and will be for a couple of more weeks at least. Bikes - could only fit one on the camper so bought 3 newies and put them together. Kids had a fine ... read more

Only five weeks to go before I leave and already my work "colleagues" are taking bets on how soon I come back, why I come back, and how many diseases I return with.
