Cairns to Cape Tribulation and back! Well, Kicking off 2007 in style!!!! Flew from Sydney up to the hot and muggy Cairns. Did nt fancy sticking around in Cairns for long, so hired a car straight away (random little green Mazda almost falling to bits - 12 quid a day though so bargain!!) and drove up to a place called Port Douglas, where we overnighted and then on up to a place called Cape Tribulation. Beautiful tropical rainforest area. Thai style resort on the beach, massive critters as big as your head, and lovely warm water (no swimming though, full of killer jellyfish). Really enjoyed it here. On the way back down we went Croc spotting on the Daintree river. Saw a few but not quite the 8 meter beasts we were expecting!! Still good to ... read more

Well it was a pretty full on day today. Worked 12 hours. Setting up i the morning helping the caterers who were doing japenese type buffet style food. Then had to get champayne and nibbles over to railway station (after 3.57 as thats when the last train leaves!!!) So Me and Graeme were left with buffet food, 12 bottles of bubbles sat in a train station waiting room in the middle of nowhere in the mountains!!! We just l;ooked at each other thinking it couldnt get much more random! Then a backpacker walked in and wondered what we were doing to! After that it was a quick move back to the education centre to get the dinner ready. Cleaning, doing dishes and serving. Luckily we got to try some of the amzing food. Duck, goose, mussles, ... read more

Jan 15. The morning started with a red wattlebird, then honeyeaters, grey fantail. Went on and on thru eastern whipbird which I'd heard so often but never seen. Lost count. Maybe twenty five species. What Hillsborough is to butterflies, Mallacoota is to birds. Awesome. Sat down to eat. Lyrebirds forraging. Later spruik and swim. When many people say we've done this its time to move on. Evening at Curley's to watch TV. No show! Lee (wife) for, her mother (84) in RSL against. They were passionate. Curley went out for view to escape. All good. By the river (estuary) Royal Spoonbill (breeding) with their white plumes from the back of head. For some reason I never thought I'd see a spoonbill. The whole notion seemed so improbable, that strange beak. Strange like the pelican. The pelican ... read more

Right, quick update as I'm going exploring town today... 17th: Went into town to 'quickly book' the next part of the Mattatour, were in the shop by 10.20, and left 2 hours later, exhausted again, but with everything booked for the rest of Australia. Went from there to Wet and Wild, Australias biggest and wildest and wettest (or something like that) water park, where we spent the rest of the day in queues for rides, getting sunburt as the cream kept washing off. Stupid place... anyway some of the rides were really good, especially the most basic water slide which was just a massive drop where you went really fast and hurt your sunburnt back, your feet when you landed, and your contact lenses kept falling out. Brilliant. They had a film on in the wave ... read more

And after 24 hours of traveling...I finally made it to Auckland- hooray!! Actually the 11 hour flight from LA to Fiji wasn't as bad as I expected...the benedryl pills helped a lot- thanks mom! I slept for about 6 1/2 hours! It was awesome...and thanks to some good advice from my baby I requested the emergency aisle seat so I had tons of leg room for both flights and could even put my legs up! I was super stoked...you can see the luxurous leg room from the pictures. It defiently started to hit me that I was leaving when I was dropped off at the airport by my parents and rich...and probably cried for a good 2 hours...but as the flight continued I started to get more excited about the experiences that lie ahead. I met ... read more

well well well look who it is Jan 14/07 Lesson of the day: Sun is extremely hard to find in Auckland so when you see it, enjoy it. Well the weather gods had finally looked down on me today and decided that several days of rain and clouds was enough suffering on this poor poor lad. So by late afternoon the weather turned to gold so the family and I went to the beach to soak up some rays and try out some body surfing on the decent sized waves. But sadly this came at a price as a huge wave knocked me to the ground, taking not only my juice money and my pride but also my Oakley sunglasses, which I have had since the 9th grade.... R.I.P oakleys you will be missed. Jan 15/07 ... read more

We had every intention of setting the World on fire today. Instead, we killed our day by getting drunk with our Irish neighbors, Stanley and Hazel. It started so innocently. Gina was away having a massage and I was sitting outside of our room drinking a glass of wine and taking a few photos. Idle chit chat turned into a gale force fete once the politician returned from her rub down. Until this point, I had been looking for an exit strategy from the conversation since Gina and I were supposed to rent bikes today and tour the city. Then Stanley ducked inside his bungalow and reemerged with the first bottle of wine. Four and one half bottles of wine, one shot of whiskey and a few tuna fish sandwiches later, we had ourselves some new ... read more

Yawn...stretch…no clock in site. There is nothing like waking up to the sounds of the Pacific and watching your bedroom curtains dance with the ocean breeze…tis’my awakening the last few mornings. I have been sent adrift to an island of relaxation. Gene and I rented bikes again and headed about five miles into town. Along our journey, I noted the above-ground burial plots of the deceased; as in New Orleans, the dead are buried above the ground due to the high water table. The islanders of Rarotonga appear better-off financially than the Tahitians, but are perhaps just more efficient with their time and income. Even the dogs have meat on their bones here and I have yet to see a stray. The homes are of better build and the landscapes better kept. The island itself, as ... read more

Drove to Wellington. It's a nice city with loads of shops. The view driving from Paraparaumu to the capital is breathtaking as the road goes right along the coast. Apparently there are quite a few head-on collisions because drivers spend too much time looking at the view rather than the road. We played pool and darts in an English pub for a while and then went to a few more bars. It was quite a quiet night for a saturday and the bards didn't really fill up until midnight. You do notice a big gap in the age groups here though. There didn't seem to be anyone between the ages of 20 and 30. This is undoubtedly because most Kiwis at that age leave the country. ... read more
