Melbournessa majoituin hostelli Bakpakiin. Lähinnä siksi, e... read more

After the NY party I got a lift to Christchurch where I met up with a few mates I met before a while back. Favourite city in NZ so far. It has a colonial feel to it and actually has a bit of life in it. There is so much going on in NZ but with a small population the first thing that hits you is that you wonder where everyone goes out. They all have their own parties but Christchurch is a lot more like home. Some good beaches there too. They have a good museum and although I thought the antarctic centre was a rip off it was extremely interesting. All the scientists that go on to Antarctica come through here - "The Gateway to Antarctica" Obviously as a scientist I found this place ... read more

Staying by Lake Pukaki and Mount Cook has been an absolute dream and it was with a heavy heart that we made the decision to move on this morning. The weather wasn't quite as good as it had been for the last couple of days and Glynn and I were both nursing a bit of sunburn again despite all the sun cream we piled on yesterday. Poor Glynn got sunburnt lips so his morning wasn't much fun but that didn't stop him from taking one last dip in the glacier lake before we left. It was just too cold for me today though! We stopped in Twizel (pronounced Twy-zel) briefly to pick up a few groceries and Glynn got to play on some giant heavy machinery that had been converted into a bit of a display/play ... read more

We had a thoroughly enjoyable day at the zoo the best bit was getting up close to a lot of the animals. At every opportunity the pubic were encouraged to get involved. The only down side to our visit was that Steve Irwin was no longer there to strut his stuff in the Crocoseum. Although he has built up an unforgettable legacy you could feel the zoo missed his presence. The large memorial and many boards filled with pictures of his exploits brought to you a sorrow for his untimely departure and a sympathy for poor little Bindy who has been seemingly positioned into the unenviable job of filling the great mans shoes. Throughout the day we got to see all the animals that were native to Australia, a lot more than we had imagined. The ... read more

As soon as we turned east away from the coast we realised what everyone had been going on about! We had seen so many great views in NZ but none had really taken our breath away. But now it all came at once ... huge snow capped peaks towering out of still blue lakes and cascading rivers running through mountainous terrain. No surprise that our little rings showing Lord of Rings film sets on our map where picking up! It so deserved the title stunning! Well after nearly causing a few piles ups and being the brunt of some dodgy breaking as all the tourists tried to take in the views, we got to Wanaka. Wanaka is kind of Queenstown's little sister set on a lake cunningly named Lake Wanaka. There are some lairy bars and ... read more

Far North Queensland, home of scenic delights such as the Great Barrier Reef, Atherton Tablelands, Cape Tribulation and also to some of the most feral forms of human life imaginable (and that includes Wolverhampton). With Matt Richards stranded in Noosa it was back to solo travelling for a while and after arriving at Gilligan's hostel to be greeted in my dorm by a German randomly wingeing about someone stealing his pasta from the kitchen, I immediately set about booking a tour to Cape Tribulation. I'd had a quick look around the town of Cairns (it doesn't take long) and soon realised that there wasn't much to hang around for. This was confirmed when upon setting foot in the nearest boozer I was forced to watch England get walloped by the Aussies at 20/20 cricket and listen ... read more

Had a look around Dunedin, including the world's steepest street and Cadbury's World (theres one about half an hour from home but we came to the one half way round the world!). Then drove north via the Moeraki Boulders and Oamaru towards Mt Cook.... read more

Following the greyhound bus journey from Brisbane arrived in Noosa and was met by the courtesy coach for Kola Backpackers resort where I had booked for 2 nights. On arrival into the dorm the room was filthy and the shower had green algae going up the walls, I asked if they had another dorm but was told no. During the afternoon went down to Noosa heads then came across the YHA asked if they had space for the hostel and sat outside the room on the balcony for the evening. ... read more
