With temperatures in Delhi creeping towards the 50s and just over a week of our trip left, we decided to head to McCleod Ganj. This is small but popular hill station in the Himalayan foothills, famous as the town where the Dalai Lama and thousands of Tibetans now live in exile from their country. It sounded like a good place to chill out (literally) and be able to spend some time thinking about our trip and preparing for home. It was also a good place to rehabilitate for our return to ‘real life’. We hoped to do some trekking to back in form - Ma and Pa Sitch certainly won’t be impressed with current fitness levels. We needed to relax and learn how to fill a day with not much rather than being constantly on ... read more

If the tour of Rajasthan we'd booked with Smyle wasn't a complete rip-off, there were certainly some generous profit margins being worked into their sums! The hotels we stayed at were not all too the standard we'd expected and our driver just seemed to be booking them on the fly, much as we could have done ourselves, probably for half the price we'd already paid. The 'sight-seeing' included sales pitch also seemed a bit dubious, as what it actually meant was that our driver would drive us to all the sights, but we'd still have to pay on average Rs250 per person to get into most temples, forts, etc. Over the 12 days, this amounts to a considerable extra cost. Luckily for Smyle however, we had an excellent trip - our driver was so polite ... read more

Welcome to 'Planet India'! We should have known we were in trouble when shortly after entering Indian airspace our plane had some almighty turbulence. The english captain came on speaker and in rather a peed off tone told us that Indian air traffic control had let us get too close to another plane and we were left in their wake ... it helps!! As we touched down in Delhi at 2 in the morning, we were told the temperature was 32 degrees (the daytime average being over 40)! Now we knew we'd let ourselves in for something a bit different! We had arranged a pick up with our guesthouse - Smyle - which was very lucky as the airport was very basic with no obvious way to get to town. As we drove towards Delhi, ... read more

On a print out of our flight itinery we'd noticed that our flight from Hong Kong to Mumbai was status ‘wait listed’ despite the fact that our actual ticket said we were confirmed, so on arrival to Hong Kong we thought we better check with Cathay Pacific. It turned out that we were wait listed, and due to the excessive demand for this flight the waiting list had been cancelled!! All flights to Mumbai for the foreseeable future were booked solid as well! What to do? There was serious consideration given to changing our plans altogether and heading for a sunny destination somewhere in Europe. India was giving us real trouble anyway, the pending monsoon rains had thwarted our plans to visit Goa to spend a couple of weeks on the beach and travel was ... read more

Having seen Matt and Sarah off in style we chilled for a little while in Bangkok to recover. It wasn't long though before we were headed out again. We had over a week until our flight to Hong Kong and knew that we didn't want to spend it all in the chaos of the Khao San Road. We decided to do a mini loop round two towns of interest not far from Bangkok. Both of which had such complicated names that we never seemed to be able to tell people where we were or where we were going! The first town, Kanchanaburi, was made famous by the WWII film "Bridge Over The River Kwai". It was an old Japanese prisoner of war camp for allied soldiers where many British, Dutch, Australian and other captives were ... read more

The BBC website was telling us otherwise, but we refused to believe it could be raining on Thailand's famous beaches in the south. But as usual, the Beeb were right. Our first port of call was the island of Ko Phang Nang. We got there using practically every mode of transport available to us - taxi, plane, bus, boat and then a taxi again. The full moon party was about to kick off, which sounds about as much fun as a point in the eye, so we headed to Chalok Lam in the north, which is nice and secluded and not to busy. On arrival the usual 'see how much money we can scam from the tourists' competition began, so we took shelter in the nearest bar and probably made ourselves a little too comfortable, ... read more

It felt strange coming back to Bangkok after six weeks away. Its not often you get a base on a trip like ours so it was homely to check back into the Asha Guesthouse. It seemed a good choice as it is quiet and out of town and we just wanted to chill for a day before friends from home Matt and Sarah arrive for a two week holiday. We weren't off to the best start when delays in Oman meant Matt and Sarah arrived a few hours late. It was very exciting to see people from home after such a long time. We quickly introduced them to two important facets of Thailand - the beer and the food. Fed and watered, we headed to Chatuchak Weekend Market. It was huge and you need a ... read more

Our bus from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap was along a rare and beautiful section of paved road. Siem Reap is the town found nearest to the Angkor Archaeological Park - a collection of temples and ruins built by the Khmer empire between the 9th - 13th century by successive kings each trying to out do the others. Angkor means ‘capital city’ and this is the capital city of an empire that ruled from Burma to Vietnam. Its quite impressive. We'd arranged to meet David and Rebecca, who we’d travelled with through Laos, at a guesthouse called The Prince Mekong. It’s a nice guesthouse offering lots of free extras…bikes, laundry, breakfast etc, but was quite new and had yet to invest in air conditioned rooms meaning sleep was rare and fitfull. Erich the owner was ... read more

We had sampled all the great stuff on offer in Phnom Penh and on our final day we were to see the worst side of Cambodia and of human kind. Between 1975 and 1979, Cambodia was ruled by Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge army. Initially, when Pol Pot took charge, the Cambodians were pleased as they supported his communist views and were glad to get rid of a corrupt military government that had overthrown their king. This didn't last more than a day as he emptied the cities, split up families and began a killing spree that took over 2 million lives. Pol Pot wished to take Cambodia back to its rural roots and hence wished to get rid of all educated people and their families leaving only peasant population who would not challenge ... read more

We were picked up from our hostel in Vietnam on the best bus we'd ever travelled on in South East Asia - its was brand spanking new, and had air-con and super comfy seats. As it was Paul's birthday, Vicki explained - lying through her aching teeth - how she had had this bus put on especially. Immediately, the bubble burst. We were suddenly told to get off the bus. A couple of minutes of confusion and we were told we'd been picked up by the wrong bus. We were ushered into the back of a mini-bus and transported down the road to our real bus. Gutted. It was a knackered, rusting old jalopy, full of screamings kids and a TV blurting out a Cambodian karoke video. It was supposed to be a 6 hour ... read more
