I finally spelled Haast correctly. Could not find it in the guide books because I thought it was Hast. Oh well. It is just a wide spot in the road. The rain came down in sheets last night. We went for a walk to see the Fox Glacier. They said it was 5 min. walk, like hell it was. Maybe a mountain goat to do it in 5 min.s but it took about 45 min.s for Juanita. I do have to say, I admired her determination and it was well worth it when we got there. Juanita crashed and burned about 8 PM and was awake at 7 AM. Last night, in the rain we gassed up the car and then asked about a grocery store. They sent us 5 K down the road. It stopped ... read more

after that night we headed upto the next Glacier i mentioned, Fox Glacier. in this one we had some goings on. i actually booked to hike upon to said Glacier and try my luck against mother New Zealand. so after the breifing, we put on our coats, and our boots, and got in the coach which took us to the bottom of this monster. we headed our of the coach with our guide, who has the coolest beard in the world, i wanted to touch it - but daren't ask him. we were at the bottom but we still had to walk up the valley and back down to get onto it 1/4 up. so we set off, i had the canadain infront of me, and the irish behind me. so i was in stitches cos ... read more

After leaving Queenstown, we drove to Fox Glacier. It was again a beautiful drive, first through the sunny hills and plains between Queenstown and Wanaka, and then through the impressive rainforest… in the rain! We took some breaks from driving, Michiel and I went to look at the sea and got very wet and cold (the waves were a little higher and faster than we had expected…) but it was a lot of fun. When we arrived in Fox Glacier it was still raining however, so we were afraid that the heli-hike to the Franz Josef glacier the next day would be cancelled. But lucky as we were, the weather cleared the next day (allegedly we were in the only dry place in New Zealand at that moment), so Michiel and I could go onto the ... read more

Panorama: Fox Glacier Neve After my defeat at the Battle of Franz Josef, we spurned the Glaciers and decided to head off further south. ('It's only a bit of ice up a mountain anyway'). As it happens, Jo and Tony, a smashing couple of fellow intrepid explorers from the UK whom we'd met many months ago at Blue Lake, Rotorua, were venturing forth in our direction so we arranged a timely meeting. After a night at The Wilderness Camp in Makarora, exchanging stories over 'school dinners' in the camp canteen, we girded our loins to commence battle again, following Jo and Tony back up to Fox Glacier to give that lump of ice a good seeing to. Fox didn't even put up a fight when we got there. It's only a 20 minute walk from the ... read more

We have had a fantastic time at the glaciers. I did a heli hike amongst white and pale blue ice, quite beautiful. We have been on a night time walk to see glowworms and were up at 6 am this morning to walk around Lake Matheson ( hour and a half ). We were able to photograph spectacular views with the mountains reflected in the water. We are now at beautiful Lake Moeraki, a wilderness lodge. It is hot and sunny and a glass of chilled Marlborough wine is waiting for me. Things are definitely getting better!!... read more

Ok I'm chasing my tail here.....going to quickly try to recount the last few weeks in NZ even though I've left there for South America already......so excuse all typos etc......could be messy. We're well used to the windy roads of NZ by now & trips taking longer than normal but at least the scenery is a good trade-off for the longer journey time. After Queenstown we motored on to Fox Glacier. Took us the whole day nearly to get there but the scenery coming through Haast Pass is beautiful......so so green and tropical looking as we drove more north through the mountains.....didn't do any hiking though cause we were on a bit of a tight schedule.....never enough time to do everything! Fox Glacier....as the name suggests is a big mound of ice that is advancing and ... read more

Paa bussen ... read more

Today was definitely one of the highlights of my trip to New Zealand, maybe of my whole adventure so far. We woke up really and got dressed wearing shorts on the bottom, and lots and lots of layers on top. That day I would be doing a heli-hike up Fox Glacier - taking a helicopter up to the pristine glacier top and hiking and exploring for a couple of hours. The scenery up there was unlike any I have ever seen, it might as well have been the moon it was so foreign, but so so gorgeous. We had a great guide named Jared... Jeremy? I feel bad for forgetting. But he was awesome, and although I was kind of terrified at the beginning, as anyone in my group can attest to, I had a really ... read more

Esa noche, despeusde Jackson Bay, dormimos ... read more
