Date visited: 1-2 February We arrived at Franz Joseph village at lunchtime. The weather had deteriorated rapidly and we were faced with a very gloomy sky and pouring rain. This combined with a limited accommodation choice meant we had to spend the day in a hostel full of young people - crowded, hectic, stressful and dirty. This wasn't our choosing but there was nowhere else affordable. The day was spent largely in the glacier tours building where Ben had difficulty choosing which glacier and what type of walk to go on. Lots of choice including half/3/4 days and 'Heli-hikes' which would take you up further in a chopper. I decided not to go on the ice-walk as speaking to the guides directly they described the tricky terraine, 2500 odd steps to climb and the hours spent ... read more

Saturday, December 15th, 2007 - 12:59 a.m. We spent all day today driving. Well, Alex drove and I took pictures. I haven't been able to sleep the last two nights...both nights I slept for about three hours and then it was a lost cause trying. The first night I spent hours and hours thinking, my mind spinning about my life and my future...then I got up and painted my nails. Here I am - night number three...it's one a.m. and I'm still bug eyed awake. I did sleep for about a hour in the car. During part of that hour Alex pulled into a little town so we could eat and I woke up while he was trying to find a place to park. I'm the navigator, but since I didn't see how he got us ... read more

We have had so many experiences in the last few days. Yesterday we went on the Siberia experience, which was a 30 minute flight in a Cessner plane, a 2 1/2 hour trek through the Siberia valley and ending with a 30 minute jet boat ride. I didn't enjoy the plane very much -very claustrophobic and hot but the jet boat was great fun. We've topped it today with a Heli-hike up the Fox Glacier which was (to use modern parlance) awesome. unfortunately I can't put the photos on here at the moment because the machine doesn't have a photo card slot to fit my camera :( Will try later with a cable. ... read more

This was our last big day of adventure before making our way toward home. With Queenstown in our rear view mirror, we continued north toward Fox Glacier. There were some great photo ops as well as a stop to finally sample a Whitebait Fritter. It’s hard to describe but think of a small egg omelet filled with white worms with black stripes and big black eyes. It’s served on a piece of white bread with butter. Brian thought “not bad”. Amy tried it (because Brian didn’t let her look too closely) and she thought “yuck”! Our original plan was to drive the 5 hours to the glacier but hold off the 4 hour hike up the glacier until the next morning. We arrived with plenty of energy and the sky was blue (a rarity), so we ... read more

After a hearty breakfast at Franz Josef Glacier Country Retreat, Robert drives us to Fox Glacier for another walk. This time, he doesn’t have to remind Alan to stay behind the ropes. It’s too cold for any mishaps. Fox Glacier is much steeper than Franz Joseph. The ice takes a sharp dogleg to the right making it hard to see the upper reaches of the glacier, especially on a cloudy day. I’m not sure if it’s the v-shaped valley or the low clouds, but we really feel the cold. The easy hike is along a low ridge that hugs the riverbed and ends right at the glacier. By the time we finish taking photos our hands are red and cold so Alan and I rush back to the car to warm up. Next, we travel to ... read more

After an early start to the day, we walked to the Parakanui Falls as our last stop in the Catlins. Then we drove for hours past Queenstown, stopping along the way at two more waterfalls. We pulled into the Fox Glacier area and called it a night.... read more

Okay, let's speed things up a bit and continue our journey northward on the west end of South Island. After leaving Queenstown, we headed north to Wanaka, where we stopped at the totally cheezy and totally fun Puzzling World (great for all ages!) and managed to get a photo of Karen and I looking...short! Clearly an optical illusion... Further northward to the coast, where (shedding our outer layer of Icebreaker), we took in the warmth and beauty of the blue waters and rugged coastline along the way. We made a great decision to head down a road to a holiday park (eg place to overnight our campers) at Haast Beach. We got super lucky with the weather and the sunset was gorgeous. Early next morning we set out northward, with a little beach stop photo shoot seen ... read more

The weather was overcast on the morning of the jump so wasn't sure if it would go ahead, but when we arrived they assured me it would and as soon as we arrived I was putting on the suit and harness and going through all the safety stuff. The plane was very small and only had enough space for the pilot plus 4 others! I was last to get on the plane and would therefore be the first out and I sat right next to the door - the latch looked well dodgy, but the view was excellent. You could see the sea and lakes below us as we went up and when we went through the clouds it was like a whole new world. The mountains and the glacier were incredible and were set against ... read more

Like I said, going out the night before probably not sensible considering the early morning, and apparently afew people were pretty ill on the bus journey!! I wasn't on the bus for long as I was being dropped off at Fox so that I could do my half day hike on the Fox Glacier. I dropped my stuff at the hostel then started on the 'short' walk to Lake Mattheson, supposedly the mirror lake, from which you can see Mount Cook. It took me nearly three quarters of an hour to walk the 10k road down to the lake and by time I got down the magic bus was just pulling away! Also by the time I got there the previously beautiful morning was becoming cloudier and the wind was getting up so that all the ... read more
