Fox Glacier is a miracle to me. The base is only 200m above sea level and the top is only about 700, I think. why does it not melt awy faster? I am told that there is a large basin at the top which feeds into ice and the glacier moves down the gorge at 1 meter per day. It was receding until 1985 and now it is growing again very slowly. It is an amazing experience to go up onto the ice itself and see the crevasses and qwater running along the top and down into the 'moulins' - holes only to reappear at the base as a river. The walk to the glacier goes along the hillside and covers 700 steps upwards. One of our party felt faint and had to return - a ... read more

Yesterday saw me arrive in Haast after a stiff climb over the Haast Pass. The day was a bit dull but it meant that the hills had cloud hanging over them, which was quite attractive. As I got closer to Haast the rain started and then petered out until i put my washing out later on. I had my first bad experience in Haast, where I had booked into the Haast Lodge for a room at $50. I thought I would treat myself to a better room, but was shown to a hut on the edge of the site. the hut was a bit tatty with plywood floor with no carpet and no services. This meant I would have to trail 80 yards across a puddled car park to the toilet at 3am and there was ... read more

Hi, We've been at a campsite at Fox Glacier for the past two days. On the way here we picked up a American couple that we ended up hanging out with for the day. We've been doing many smaller 1/2 day walks and are enjoying the hot showers! We can't upload photo's at the moment but we'll try to do that soon. Tomorrow we're off to Queenstown to do some rafting, a canyon swing and skydive. Sweet! Sean 1/23/09 Enjoy the photos, we'll add more as we have time.... read more

We left Queenstown and started up the west coast, the wild wild west of NZ where mountains, rivers, and trees surrounded us in all directions. The road wound through impressive nature reserves pretty much our entire way up the west side, but all Val and Steve could see were their lives flashing before their eyes with my racecar maneuvers around the crazy cliffside curves. Oh, our '98 Nissan Sunny handled like a dream! It was one of the most gorgeous drives I'd ever done. This is what NZ is all about! We arrived at Fox Glacier a couple hours before sundown and decided to check out Lake Matheson hoping to see the mountains and sunset colors reflect off the mirror-like water. But the clouds rolled in as we made our way to the lake, so the ... read more

Well being that is was Christmas and all we figured it would be a good idea to get up to see some snow. We started by doing a hike to the bottom of the Franz Josef glacier and then headed the 25km down the road to the Fox glacier. We stayed the night in Franz josef because Danielle was going to jump back on the bus in the morning and Niv and I were going to take off to Christchurch the next day.... read more

West Coast November 27, 2008 We had a late start out of Wanaka. It was just so pretty and quiet in our caravan park that we took our sweet time getting showers, having breakfast, washing dishes, and putting the jigsaw puzzle van back to its daytime configuration. We’re a team now, and we might win the “changing the van from nighttime sleeping to daytime use” Olympics. We also decided to take a drive to an overlook of Lake Wananka and I requested that we make a stop at Puzzling World. If you are in Wananka, you don’t need to stop there unless you are into mazes and optical illusions in a big way. We just did the free stuff, and were then on our way to finally getting off the southern section of the map. We ... read more

and that's just what they do We spent our last days in the North Island driving many hours a day to make it to Wellington with a day to spare there, before getting the ferry back to the South Island. The last 2 nights we spent in windy, black sanded beaches: 1st at Turakinae Head, where a bunch of night fishermen spooked us big time and the 2nd at Sinclair Head where, according to the map, there was a seal colony so, after spending the day in Wellington, we parked the van and went for a walk in search of the seals: to find them you must walk on a pebble and sand track, fighting with the tail wind so you won't fly away and, when you get there... there are only 4 seals!!!, literally!!; I ... read more

I have made my way down to Fox Glacier through Hokitika, where I wanted to see the gorge, even though the weather turned against me and it was raining all day I still went, I have never seen such a blue water..…Once I arrived at Fox Glacier the rain had stopped which made it good to go and see the Glacier itself. I almost booked a tour to go on the Glacier, but then it would mean I would have to stay in one spot for 2nights and the weather did not look that good, although I was hoping for it to clear by the next day…. I went to a campsite on Gillespies Beach and it rained again. In the night I was thinking when is the big wave coming to get me, such a ... read more
