On my way up the West Coast decided to stop in Fox Glacier for a day. It's a natural but it sounds great! Fox Glacier the village is a tiny place, it's basically just one short street with a lot of confused looking hikers wandering about. To get on the glacier itself you'd have to pay at least $100, so we decided to just do a gentle walk to the look-out point to admire from a distance. Ended up being through a jungle, and miles down a road, but it was still nice. Once we got to the look-out, and admired the view for a bit, this Kea just flew out of nowhere and hung around for a bit. It kind of seemed like it was trying to sidle round to the bench to pinch our ... read more

Beating the odds (and the bad weather gods) yesterday, we were able to do the heli-hike onto Fox Glacier. Mere language is vastly inadequate to try to describe the experience. First time on a helicopter, first time on a glacier. First time on a helicopter that lands on a glacier! Our guide, Jeremy, was awesome as he led us up and back down a small portion of the glacier. We spent about 3 hours on the ice and it was unforgettable! We hiked thorough crevasses and snow caves, hopped across fissures that narrowly opened to some of the bluest of blue ice/water, saw rockface waterfalls, and learned how incredibly forceful and exquisite a glacier is. Wonderful and awe-inspiring!!... read more

a short entry this a.m. ... getting ready to go up on Fox Glacier (pronounced glassier). Posting a few pics from an incredible drive to the west coast of NZ. will have to add descriptions later ... suffice to say, we experienced 4 seasons in one day and the terrain and the stunning beauty of at least 4 continents. This place is truly amazing. When God was making the earth, he must've had the most fun creating New Zealand. Astonishing scenes that can't really be captured by human-created technology. Gotta see it with your eyes, brain, mind, and heart!!... read more

Wednesday, September 9th We survived another night in the wild. By the time we woke the Sandflies were out in full force again. The last time we went shopping we again forgot to get repellent, so we stayed in the van as much as possible and tried to keep the little buggers outside. After breakfast we left the Queenstown area, heading for Wanaka, a small town north of Queenstown. Graham and Rose had told us about it and we wanted to go check it out. Apparently it's like Queenstown but much less commercial. En-route we detoured to Cordrona ski field. At the gate we picked up three girl snowboarders heading to the top. They told us how much the shuttle cost and we could not believe how expensive it is. It's cheaper to rent a car ... read more

The journey between Nelson and Franz Josef is a painstaking 9 hour trip in a minivan. Quite ridiculous really, that New Zealand is considered a developed country, yet every single South American country I got a bus in (and yes this includes Bolivia) the bus service was much better, and more comfortable. Something to work on for our kiwi friends methinks. Not much to report on the journey, apart from the stop we made at Punaikaiki, which left just enough time for a gander at the pancake rocks, so called because they're formed in layers and look a bit like... pancakes. Who'd have thought? I arrived in Franz Josef, and tried to book myself onto a glacier walk on the glacier of the same name the next day. Unfortunately, my luck wasn't in, as the trip ... read more

This end of the south island, we’ve had to retrace our steps back from Milford Sound to Te Anau and on to Queenstown. Just after leaving Queenstown while heading east, we take a left and head north to Wanaka. Wanaka is a nice little town next to a beautiful lake with the backdrop of mountains. In spite of the weather and the fact that it’s off season, it has a very holiday-ish air about it. People walking alongside the lakeshore, cyclists, people having lunch outside - nice holiday feel to it. We stopped here to break up our journey and the next morning, paid a visit to Puzzling World (www.puzzling world.co.nz). It’s a place filled with holograms, tricks of the eye, puzzles and a large outdoor maze. We did the maze first which took us a ... read more

The drive into Glacier country was pretty scenic we finally made it back to the coast after being inland for several weeks, but no surfing for Matty, not yet!!! There are two big glaciers and glacier towns the Franz-Josef and the slightly less touristy Fox, we decided to stay in the Fox. Our first full day was a Sunday and it rained lots, it was the first time we have had a Sunday experience in a while, we sat around doing nothing all day watching Star Trek, but the highlight was talking to and seeing for the first time Daisy Bailey, we are both looking forward to giving her a cuddle in 6 weeks time. The following day in pissed it down with rain so we did sweet FA again. And the next day it was ... read more

6th March 2009 - A DAY INDOORS!!! Woke up to the sound of rain hammering it down...I thought I was back home for a second until I realised that I was sharing my room with strangers and there were no home comforts. Can't quite get used to that! Our shuttle bus to take us to Fox Glacier (30 minutes away) was picking us up at 10am and so we spent the morning just lazing about, getting ready and having breakfast. We made sure we were outside in plenty of time with the wheels off our bikes for when the bus came. The bus was on time as usual (unlike the 147 eh gran?) and for once the driver was pleasant. He even had a conversation with us that didn’t involve grunting! Wonders never cease! The rain ... read more
