Sunday 24th October. Sunday was a big driving day as we wanted to cover a large chunk of the West Coast to get down to Franz Josef and Fox Glacier. It is labour weekend this weekend so the Police are out in force to prevent driving offences. There is a population of just 1 million on the South Island and about 600 thousand of them must be police. Despite the Top Gear-esque coastal ralleigh roads, Dave had to drive like a 90 year old Sunday driver because there were police on every corner. The plan was to cling to the western coastal road and stop off for lunch at Punakaiki Pancake Rocks and blow holes. Unfortunately, the navigator wasn't on form and we ended up on an inland road which re-joined the coast about 60km south of ... read more

We are now in the South Island and having a ball. We loved it when we first hit the shores and that the sun is shining it's a great change for the last few days. We change into our shorts to take advantage of the drive to Kiakoura. We stopped at a fantastic winery and had to buy a bottle of Tempranillo, stopped at a café on the beach and had lunch and watched a colony of Fur seals. The next day at Kiakoura, I went on a whale watching cruise while Menx has some Personal time to herself to read her book and have coffee and cake. The whale watching has a 98% success rate and if you don't see a whale they give you 80% of the ticket price back. Lets just say, I ... read more

After nearly one Week Queenstown (with Breaks) i was back on the Road to the Glaciers Fox and Franz Josef. Back to Camping in DOC Campsites (basic Campsite without shower and with Honestybox - normally you have to pay 6 Bucks, but when your Name is "Hammer" it's for free :-)) and eating Noodles with Tomato Sauce. I visit o lot of nice Places during the Drive to the Glaciers. Normally you can drive in 1 Day to the Glaciers, but i'm not in a Rush. I'm driven in 2-3 Days to there. It's very impressiv how huge are this Glaciers. It's a lot of Ice. I'm thinking about to do a Glacier Trek, unfortunately the wheater was very bad. Rain the hole Day. After the Glacier i'm heading more North to Hokitika... read more

Hi, decided to do a special blog for the Glaciers as so many pictures and an amazing experience! Arrived here at Fox on a Wednesday afternoon with the sun shining after a wet drive from Greymouth! Found a little campsite right in the heart of the township, close to everything, not that there is a lot to be close to! Several cafes/bars , helicopter bookings, petrol station, general store and an internet cafe! But very nice and quiet with the picturesque mountains behind. IOn the way here in the morning I had to pass through Franz Josef and so stopped at the Glacier car park, to do the hour and a half walk to the Glacier terminal face. Quite weird as you walk through some rainforest then walk up the river bed to the glacier face ... read more

I wonder if it’s possible that when I changed my plan and took such a large and radical right turn that I splintered a hole through the known Universe, slipped through the slit that appeared vagina-like in the ether and slid in-between into some sort of place just slightly out of sync with the rest of reality. I know this might strike you as slightly far-fetched, hardly the stuff of a plain old travel blog (although if you saw where I was currently sitting writing this, the surreal quality I’m asking for might be far simpler and more plausible for you to entertain) but ever since I’ve arrived in New Zealand I’ve had this same bizarre feeling, as if everything is going on one realm away from wherever I am, as if I’ve fallen into some ... read more

Up at 6:45am and off towards Fox Glacier today! It started off crappy and cloudy out but got warm and sunny closer we got to Fox. Majority of us did the 4 hour hike through a rainforest up a million steps, to get to the glacier. Most people were exhausted but I showed true fitness as I was luvin every moment of it! I love hiking with a passion! Our guide warned us not to sweat too much cuz once we got out of the rainforest and onto the glacier our sweat will freeze so it was hard to maintain your body temperature. Our guide was a cute 20 year old who all the girls (and guys) loved so much! I think everyone was trying to impress him with our fitness so it was funny! When ... read more

Shortly after checking in we booked a helicopter flight to fly over the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers and to land on the upper portion of the Fox Glacier. Although Mare and I were in shorts and golf shirts we were warm due to the strength of the sun. Interesting that when we threw snowballs at each other the other helicopter passengers just stared. The ash on the snow is from the fires in Australia. The next morning we walked around Lake Matheson from which I got several interesting photos of the mountains and the glacier. After lunch we setoff to an area that provided a view of the glacier. The going was rough since about 10 days before our arrival they had torrential rains with the result that the trail was in less than the ... read more

Having done a whole glacier day yesterday, instead of the half day I'd planned I've stayed in fox for another day giving me chance to see lake matheson and do some laundry, the hostel scuppered all my plans by doing my laundry for me, it arrived back on my bunk this evening washed and dried, even the dry sac it had been packed in which makes me alittle worried, but it meant I had nothing to do this afternoon which turned well in the end.  This morning I took my life into my own hands and borrowed a bike from the hostel to take me the 2km to lake matheson, the mirror lake. To say the bike was badly maintained was an understatement. I don't look after my bike but this one had, no breaks, and ... read more

So today was glacier day, and it's been brilliant. I've wanted to see a glacier for years to now and to have finally experienced one and been mesmerised by it is just amazing. The constant reminder of the force of nature is truly humbling.  Fox glacier is one of the only glaciers in the world to be surrounded by rainforest. Now I knew that fact before I went but I hadn't appreciated what it meant. The walk up, please note up, to the surface of the glacier saw us walking up the morain to the terminal face (get me with the lingo), well not that near because it's too dangerous, then moving to the left of the glacier itself to walk up the hill on the side, in 3 minutes you go from standing beneath a wall ... read more
