13th April ’12 Wanaka to Fox Glacier A long day’s travelling again today – they feel that way as all the roads are twisty and turny, but again through immense scenery and with lots of photo stops at viewpoints and for a short walk to a nice waterfall. Howard had me all excited at the lunch stop prospect as he found a place called Jackson Bay which was according to the map slightly off our route but which the guide book reckoned was where you could get the best, freshest fish and chips ever along with more stunning views. However when we reached the turn off and discovered it was going to be a 50 mile detour we reckoned it wasn’t worth it and so we stopped instead back at Haast at their café which boasted ... read more

Hello folks! Our adventure continues. This past week has been marked by two wonderful experiences. We took the TranzAlpine train from Greymouth on the west coast to Christchurch on the east coast over the Southern Alps through Arthur's pass, following along the various glacial rivers situated in broad valleys with large herds of sheep and cattle grazing - staying over night in Christchurch and then returning the next day. This provided us with the opportunity to see a part of NZ that we would otherwise not have seen. At this time of year, the water level in the rivers is quite low, revealing expanses of gravel on either side that indicated just how wide the rivers would be during the spring runoff. Although only in Christchurch for one night, we stayed in the Y on the ... read more

january 2, 2012 by Craig Hello, or Kia Ora, from NZ. We have been here now for 11days and have had 11 straight days of sunshine. Must be some sort of record for the South Island of NZ? ! From Milford Sound we traveled up to Queenstown, where we stayed for a few days, including NYE. The three of us became smitten with the place, perhaps due to its innate beauty, the glorious weather and the buzzy atmosphere. Queenstown is the adventure capital of NZ - home of bungee jumping, etc. Whatever you want to do, you can do it here. We did not partake in any of the adrenal-surging stuff, but instead took the gondola up the mountain for awesome views back over the city, Lake Wakatipu on which it sits, and the huge surrounding ... read more

Well then, we arrived in Fox in fine form to go and see the Fox Glacier. We drove first to the lookout point, which seemed to be lacking a real lookout, oh, and wait, yeah, a bathroom. Unfortunately I had been counting on this and despite running around for 20 minutes deeper into the woods looking for it, I couldn't find it. The unfortunate Kiwi or tourist will find a terrible surprise if they wander off the beaten bath. We did eventually find a bathroom after I waddled around for another 20 minutes up the road to a different car park (it was a huge relief). We saw the Fox glacier with the sun shining, but when we reached the car the clouds had become thick so we drove back to the beach. After eating dinner ... read more

This morning I didn't see Tom or Mark as I groggily trudged my way to breakfast. Today I could only stomach one piece of toast with jam instead of two and put down a few glasses of water. There has been a pretty gnarly cough and flu going around the bus and I had been struggling with it for the last two days. So i complemented my breakfast with some airborne and hot water. As i hopped onto the bus I quickly found the seat closest to the front, to minimize the motion I would feel and grabbed the second row seat. The bus had to leave late on the account of three of the girls from the tour woke up 5 minutes prior to the bus departure time. I looked behind and saw Tom and ... read more

Just another Island? On that Friday morning I drove down to the harbor and got myself and my new car on the ferry. Yeah, the EEL was left behind. After a few days I got fed up with it. Not the car as such. The CD player in the EEL. It could only play the first 5-6 songs on every CD and often it didn't do that very well. Apart from the odd hitchhikers and a Norwegian guy who went along for a day and a half, I had pretty much been sitting in that car alone for hours every day and then it does make a big difference if you can listen to your music of choice or the local radio from Masterton or god knows where. So the EEL was changed to the EDS ... read more
