Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Looks nice. Less so if you turn 180 degrees...
Hello, I am currently quite annoyed, as I started this with the intention of getting some more photos up. Sadly, the computer doesn't seem to recognise the existence of my camera, and I've given up. Update- sorted it. But anyhow.Today was the day of my trip to Fremantle, Perth's neighbour 'city', although it's a bit too small to count as a city in my opinion. The first part of the day was spent tramping up and down an industrialised area of North Fremantle trying to locate a particular road, being the meeting place for a future dive trip I have planned. Crikey!!! Heb zo veel mogelijk foto’s lopen knippen maa [View Full Entry]

I'm officially in Cairns! I got here on Wednesday (last) night about 7:30 pm. I got dinner and ice cream and took a shower and went to bed. I got up really early and took the Kurandas train up into the mountains. It's an historically train and it was awesome. I got to see a ton of great landscapes/environments. There were really pretty water falls coming out of the mountains as well that I got pictures of. I walked around the markets/village of Kurandas for awhile and then took the Skyrail back to the bottoom. That was creepy because you're just [View Full Entry]

WESTWARD HO! We did this clever thing, not completely by accident, as we knew that northern hot-spots like Katherine, Kununurra and Broome turn hellish in the dry season - camping grounds chocker, shops overwhelmed, people turned away etc, as half of NSW, WA and most of Victoria flee their home states at the first signs of winter. The plan was to stay in Darwin till late in the season to avoid this Grey Nomad feeding frenzy, leaving just before the ‘build up’ and start of the wet season. So far it’s paid off - we’ve had waterfront camp sites, empty roads, [View Full Entry]

Didn't get any sleep once I arrived! After my shower we literally just headed out to look around. Marc already knew the area pretty much as he's been here for a few days. He showed us George street which is a main street in Sydney with some fabulous shops! Had some sort of chicken salad in a cool bar, with an even cooler/hotter barman. I think I'm gonna like it here..! Definitely interested in looking for a bar job here, nothing else interests me. DEFINITELY not going back into a supermarket or retail, no sir! Unfortunately to get a bar job [View Full Entry]

So, in the last week my mission has been to find a job, annnd i think i may have found one. After walking around and around Brisbane and going through 3 different interviews, to still not be hired, I now have a trial at a place called Eves on the river. I have a shift fri and sat, so hopefully if i dont do anything horribly wrong they will keep me. The really strange thing is that at this same restaraunt there is another Emma Hoskins! How bizarre is that. Im excited to meet her, maybe she is as cool as [View Full Entry]

(Day 572 on the road) I am in Australia, and I keep having to pinch myself to believe just how different this place is compared to Southeast Asia. A mere two hour flight southeast of Bali, it feels like a different world altogether. After travelling across Asia for the last year and a half, some things that I once considered normal and a part of everyday life in Europe suddenly seem odd and new, yet strangely familiar. Some of the things I noticed on my first few days in Darwin and which caught my attention: Pedestrian crossings where cars actually stop [View Full Entry]

What a place for a swim (at Florence Falls in Litchfield NP)

Past week has been amusing. Really quiet and boring at work in the past weekend, bar a Thursday night when "the future" of law in WA came in and got drunk. They covered themselves in glory and some of them managed to cover themselves in sick. Muppets. The Saturday following that was hit and miss. Quiet day at work so I belted down to the Casino (the only one in WA) to watch the Tottenham/Stoke game. 5 min before halftime and we get a phone call from Jules telling me that one of her friends got bottled! After getting to Leederville [View Full Entry]

My PhD journey I use the metaphor of an expedition to describe my PhD journey in a preface of my research proposal and thought I share it with you. Let me know if you want to join me on this journey! My interest in this study is linked to the aim of achieving a PhD degree. These two interests are interlinked and metaphorically represent a journey or expedition into an unknown land. I use this metaphor to describe how I see and will approach my study. The goal of my expedition is to find a place (my theory), however, I do [View Full Entry]
