Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

H all We are spending tonight at Cervantes - the place Rick named his launch after. We visited the nearby Pinnacles this afternoon, and were very impressed with the way they are presented for the tourists. We walked around a 1.5km loop walking track first, seeing thousands of limestone pillars, which vary in shape and stand up to 4 metres high, then went to the visitor centre. After that we drove around the one way vehicle track. On the way back to Cervantes we called at Hangover Bay, and had a swim, and also saw the stromatolites at Lake Thetis. From [View Full Entry]

Day 181 - Cape Range National Park It was so funny when the alarm went off at midnight for the turtle watch walk, we both led in bed waiting until we could hear the zipper go on Bel and Nige’s camper trailer but we must have drifted back to sleep! I then heard what I thought was Bel’s voice say “Are you still going?” so I sprang out of bed quickly followed by Darryl, got dressed and headed out the door but there was nobody there! I must have been dreaming! It was quite windy so we thought we would check [View Full Entry]

Penguin Island? Seagull island more like. After an hour drive on a hot day (we really should have been at Adventure World) we arrived in Rockingham and got straight to the jetty to get tickets over to the Island. It's private land that has a sanctuary for penguins on it. Yep, 30+ degrees and there's penguins in Australia!?! Maybe me being naive but don't they live in the arctic and dance? Either way, $17 per person lighter and we set off across the water to the island. It's actually possible to walk it, we had the [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone, Greetings from Brisbane!. We arrived enthusiastically here early on the 14th June, a Sunday so everywhere seemed quiet and calm. We had booked our hostel before we left and were instructed to get off the airport train at Brunswick Street, unfortunately though the station was called Fortitude Valley and it took us a few train journeys to get to the right place, following that the hostel had given us their office address and we spent ages lugging our backpacks up and down an area called Spring Hill looking for the place. Eventually we arrived at Valley Verandas Hostel and [View Full Entry]

The scenery as we have been driving south has blown us away. As we head out of Townsville we are flanked on either side of the road with row after row of banana trees and what looks like sugar cane fields. Every so often we happen across roadside stalls selling the freshest and juiciest fruit imaginable and it would be rude not to try some wouldn’t it? As we arrive at Airlie Beach we are both feeling a little “beached out” and don’t really feel the vibe here. Its a place very much geared to the young, and most are here [View Full Entry]

Passing through Gin Gin we soon arrive in Childers and make a stop at the backpackers memorial in the visitors centre (a fire killed a number of backpackers at the hostel) Its very moving and, having stayed in a number of hostels on our travels we can totally understand how easy a fire could take hold. Continuing on our journey we drive into Noosa and find a place that has more roundabouts than Milton Keynes! Is this for real? Apparently there are over 100 of them in this small town. Parking up we head to find out if any free camping [View Full Entry]

Hello all! Well, a lot has happened in the last three weeks or so. When I left Katoomba I had intended to do a fair amount of camping but things didn't work out as I had hoped. I went to a town called Bulahdelah to camp at the Myall lakes but was only able to camp for one night nearby. When I got there it was a longer trek to the campsites than I had invisioned and was unable to get a ride there. I started hiking up the highway (in the heavy rain) with my supersized backpack and realized the [View Full Entry]
