Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Well work Saturday was fun. Anyone who has worked in a bar will know "that feeling" you get when some complete muppets come in and annoy you. "Put an extra shot in, im mates with xxxx" or "I know you e closed but just one more". That feeling that festers in you when you want to smash their face into the bar. Just drives you crazy. They often come in drunk and wonder why you e not serving them. And the irony when they are twice your age and can understand why they look stupid for not knowing their own limits. [View Full Entry]

We spent a bit of time in the city of Cairns before and after our dive trip. Walking along the esplanade, we looked out into the mudflats and all the interesting wildlife it had to offer. We spotted a flock of pelicans, more species of crab than we could keep track of, and to our surprise, mudskippers! It was fascinating to watch these little guys - part fish, part reptile, they're like evolution in progress. At night, large fruit bats swooped around us. After our dive trip, we rented a car for a couple of days and headed out to the [View Full Entry]

DAY 345 I was up a little earlier this morning, just after 7.00, I must have had a good nights sleep, but still well after Andy who seems to be getting up earlier than ever. I find Andy outside beetling around with the truck and trailer getting bits and pieces ready for the off tomorrow. I find out, as crazy as he is getting up so early, that he sneaked off to the car wash place just down the road to use the vacuum cleaner to finish cleaning the inside of the truck. We have breakfast, and a little bit [View Full Entry]

We left Shark Bay and continued our way south. We stopped for a night at a freepark at Nerren Nerren, and had planned to stay at another at the Murchison River, a pretty spot with lots of wild flowers. But the FLIES were so bad, after lunch inside the van, we decided to continue on to Kalbarri. We stopped on the way and did 2 short walks at Kalbarri National Park, to Hawkes Head lookout and Ross Graham Lookout. Our flynet hats came out, first time for a very long time - (the Kurong in South Australia we think was the [View Full Entry]

We spent our last night in Japan watching the Scotland vs Japan football match at the Yokohama stadium. Won,t say anything about the result except dodgy linesman... Had good fun with the Tartan Army and easily outsung the 60,000 Japanese fans. Top three football chants were: 1. You only sing Karaoke. 2. We,re here to save the whales. 3. We,re going to eat F#@!ing Sushi. A few beers later we spent the night in a capsule hotel, see pics. We both enjoyed it but it was a bit like sleeping in a coffin. After a couple of long days travelling [View Full Entry]

Heading north from Brisbane to Noosa we visited Australia Zoo made famous by it's owner the late Steve Irwin. Although expensive, it's a great place to spend a few hours. Throughout the day you can hear the keepers speak about the animals which was really interesting and entertaining, e.g keepers were lifted up by the trunks of elephants, rolled around with tigers and fed HUGE crocodiles by hand! It was fab to see Wombats and Tasmanian Devils as we'd never seen them before. Jen slightly overcame her fear of Kangaroos as we tried out feeding them and they were really tame [View Full Entry]

After a hectic couple of weeks leading up to my adventure I said a bit of a teary goodbye to my son at the airport and walked down the ramp of death... everyone knows by now that I have an insane fear of flying and this flight was no different.. reaching the plane I did my flying ritual of kissing my hand, transferring the kiss to the outside of the plane and giving her a bit of a pat! Weird yes but it would look even more stupid if I actually bought lips to plane! As I entered the plane I [View Full Entry]

Another week has begun! I went to the store again today. I bought a frozen pizza because it was onsale. I figure I’ll attempt to make it sometime this weekend when I’m busy studying for finals. I say attempt because the oven thing in the kitchen is really weird. It kind of looks like a portable oven. The one time I tried to turn it on I couldn’t even figure that out and then someone else came along and did it. Haha. It probably won’t be that hard; I really didn’t put that much effort into it the last time and [View Full Entry]

16-10-09 After breakfast we booked into the Park for another day as we wanted to clean the van , wash & get some food in the fridge. The car is filthy , but we cant wash it as there are water restrictions. Well we looked at the snorkel gear & said, what the heck, we can clean later, we quickly packed up & headed for Turquoise Bay in the National Park. We got there & settled on the beach & put our snorkel gear on & wow, all those fish under the water, the coral & the reef, just magnificent. [View Full Entry]

Meet Bagel - young male koala
hello We arrived in Brisbane at 6.30 on Friday after a 7 hour flight from Singapore. The flight went pretty smooth, i watched the original Taking of Pelham 123 (as recommended by JOB) and the Tyson documentry. Both were pretty good. I didnt get any sleep on the Plane, Anne got a wee bit but we were both totally knackered. Brisbane Airport baggage claims turned out to be an absolute nightmare, we stood at a conveyor belt that went round and round for 1 hour, with no sign of any of the Singapore flight bags. There must have been about 12 [View Full Entry]
